More and more companies are embracing social responsibility with ecommerce. The double if not triple bottom line. It’s not easy and usually it’s more expensive, so all the more respect to the companies doing it.

One such company is WearPact, an organic underwear retailer with administrative offices in California. This company is aiming for 100% sustainability and you can clearly see this on their website’s ingredient page. Through this page they detail every step of their production process, from creation to packaging, from shipping and everything else. All there in plain view. It’s amazing the effort put forth by WearPact in being as earth-friendly as possible. They also donate a good percentage of their profits to several causes, including an ocean conservation charity.

Oh! and the underwear is not bad either. They have super cute prints for both men and women and each undie is made using 95% organic cotton with 5% elastane for durability and proper fit.

Ltd has developed a humidity controller that prompts a system to begin distributing water when the dryness of the ground where it is installed reaches the specified parameter.

Depending on what system you use, manual or the modern ones, one thing is important overall. Save on water and make use of them wisely. Consumers are looking for efficient ways of using them but apparently further improvements are in order. And that is perhaps what these two Chinese companies are aiming to accomplish.

Water conservation can surely be attained if you install this showerhead concept. The device, called the Aqualim, rations out a certain quantity of water per shower. After the quantity is used, the shower reduces its flow as a warning, and soon afterwards shuts off.

Thus, if you say to yourself, “I want to get my water usage under X gallons”, the Aqualim makes it extremely easy to do so without constantly worrying if you’ve gone over. Of course if you’re the kind of person who’s sensitive enough to buy an Aqualim, you are probably more water-conscious than most people already. Also, there is a reset button; if you really want a longer shower you can just hit it.

But the device does address the tendency people have to linger in the shower after they’ve already washed up. Even someone who truly does not want to waste water might lose track of time, or simply not shut off the shower because hey, it feels nice in here and it’s pretty early in the morning.

Think of it as an alarm clock for the shower.

We last learned how to collect and use rainwater, now we move on to a topic the DIY crowd will appreciate, how to make your own rain barrel.

The video below captures an easy tutorial on a DIY rain barrel. Essentially you will need a food quality plastic barrel, which you can get for cheap from a local food processing facility, agri supply or feed supply shop. The rest of the supplies can be obtained from any local hardware store.

A good rain shower can yield several hundred gallons of water. Conserve this awesomeness for use later.

Quick Tips

1. Make sure you place or install the rain barrels on a level surface, as the barrels will get heavy once filled with water.

2. You want to make sure you keep small critters and debris out of your collected water, and you can achieve this, by installing mesh screens and covers on your rain barrel. You don’t want standing water attracting unsavory types, such as mosquitoes.

3. Take note of the weather, as cold temps ice and snow could possibly (or most likely) crack your rain barrel and destroy it.

4. To avoid an overfill on your rain barrel, try adding in another or adding a device which will runoff excess water into your yard.

5. Final tip is to use the collected rainwater. That is the whole point in harvesting it.

The idea behind it is to see how the brain is affected by lack of food etc. But it may not be as difficult for him as it might be for other Hollywood types as he already lives off the grid on the Hawaiian Island of Maui with is wife and three children.

They have no mains power and no shops just down the road either, so he might enjoy the experience, perhaps Tom Hanks might go along too!

We all live in various regions of the world today and in some places, the need to conserve water is important. While most nations boast of having adequate water supply, there is also the matter of water bills to consider.

Dripping water from a leaky faucet or perhaps unaware of water pipe problems can really become a pain in the end. Remember that your water meter is running and it would be best to have professional plumbers check them out once you see your water bills racking up.

Here are some low-cost ways to conserve water at home:

Fully loaded: Dishwashers and clothes washers should be operated when full for optimum water conservation. If you must wash partial loads, adjust the water levels as appropriate.

The dishwasher is your friend: Even old-school dishwashers don’t use as much water per dish as hand-washing. Newer, more efficient dishwashers use only 1/6 of the water used during hand-washing, and save 230 hours of yourtime each year.

Scrape, don’t rinse: Pre-rinsing dishes before loading the dishwasher is unnecessary. Scrape off food and then trust that bad boy to do its job.

Pass on permanent press: Avoid the permanent press cycle when washing clothes, which uses an additional 5 gallons for the extra rinse.

Upgrade your equipment: Consider buying a water-saving front-loading clothes washer, or a top-loading one with no central agitator.

Water Conservation Starts at Home

The largest tidal power system

A British company has won the contract to build the world largest tidal power scheme in south Korea, costing around £500 million the system will make use of the fast flowing tides that will run through the filed of three hundred 60ft tall underwater turbines, which have been fixed to the sea bed.

These turbines are simply dropped into place on the sea bed, which will take them well away from any shipping that use the area. The British company involved is Lunar Energy, they have partnered with the Korean company Midland Power Company. Once this project is completed sometime around 2015, there will be enough power produced to power up around 200,000 homes.

Droughts Linked to Global Warming

If you are experiencing abnormal weather and getting that feeling of like living in an oven waiting to be roasted, chances are you will immediately lean towards global warming as the probable cause. Actually you are right and with studies performed as the one done by American Geophysical Union.

Apparently weather conditions are just getting worse and even if we are doing our own small initiatives, it is pretty obvious that we need more practices to address this growing problem that has been irritating and making our lives inconvenient.

Well, we only have ourselves to blame and hopefully ignorant people will start feeling the heat and join the global warming preventive measures to help get our world back on track.

The persistent and dramatic decline in the snowpack of many mountains in the West is caused primarily by human-induced global warming and is not the result of natural variability in weather patterns, researchers reported yesterday.

Using data collected over the past 50 years, the scientists confirmed that the mountains are getting more rain and less snow, that the snowpack is breaking up faster and that more rivers are running dry by summer.

This is a water filter which is bottle to bottle, meaning that you have a bottle of water screw the fitment and another bottle in place and turn over the water runs through the filter with the force of gravity, then in the bottle below is pure water.

This is a concept design, which may or may not go into production; it would be a shame if it didn’t though.

Britain’s drinking water will need to have some other monitoring systems put in place ad there have been some cases of where traces of strong cancer and psychiatric drugs were detected in some samples taken.

In a statement issued by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) they said that somehow pharmaceuticals are finding their way into the drinking water system, this is something that should not happen as the there are filtration systems in place and purification treatments which are supposed to prevent anything from getting through.

Apparently there is a shortage of drinking water, but looking out of window it is difficult to realise this, but clearly there are places around that are getting no rainfall at all, which is the problem.

However as the planet is nearly three quarters covered with water then perhaps it may be useful to use some of this, naturally there is the desalination which is really costly due to the fact that so much energy is required.

So here’s the great idea from Dr Verma, from SLIET Dept of Physics, his idea is simple, build floating nuclear reactors to not only provide power but will also be able to desalinate to sea water too, now this just cannot be a good idea.

This scientific research comes from the Brain Institute of the University of Utah. The director of the study, Erik Jorgensen, states that the results of this study “suggests sexual behavior is encoded in our genes”.

The study in no way defines human sexuality or its many complexities, but it is interesting.

Giant Island breaks in half

A massive Island made of artic ice has broken in two off the coast of northern Canada, this has happen a lot earlier than originally expected the ice Island originally broke away from Ayles ice Shelf during 2005, and then it was ten miles wide and three miles wide. But now it has broken into two pieces it has begun to move faster. In fact one piece has actually moved over 61 miles in a week.

There is some concern that these huge pieces of ice may be heading towards the oil and gas platforms of the coast of Alaska.

Some details of the Ice Island:

The Ayles Ice Island calved off the Ayles Ice Shelf in August 2005

The calving event was the largest in at least the last 25 years

A total of 87.1 sq km (33.6 sq miles) of ice was lost in this event

The largest piece was 66.4 sq km (25.6 sq miles) in area

This made the slab a little larger than Manhattan

Limited sea-ice in 2007 has seen the berg move 100s of km

Protesters from over sixty eco friendly and environmentalist groups are targeting Japanese embassies in cities around the world. The reason for the protest is the killing of dolphins and porpoise. The protest hit the embassies in over 31 cities, which included London, Washington, and Rio.

There are over 20,000 of these mammals killed every year, the international Whaling Commission has been calling for a ban on the killing these creatures for a long time. The protesters were wearing red and with red flowers, a very stirring effect.

One overlooked aspect back then was the use of urinals which used flushes to drain away the wastes by humans. While hygiene may be covered, it is the proper use of controlling water as a means of flushing that has drawn criticism.

We have seen in most establishments the installation of modern and simple waterless urinals to eliminate the waste of water today. No longer is it necessary to have to flush them (something which also has some hygienic and health concerns). Some may find them costly, but the real thing is that they save water which is even costlier if used up!
