Water conservation can surely be attained if you install this showerhead concept. The device, called the Aqualim, rations out a certain quantity of water per shower. After the quantity is used, the shower reduces its flow as a warning, and soon afterwards shuts off.

Thus, if you say to yourself, “I want to get my water usage under X gallons”, the Aqualim makes it extremely easy to do so without constantly worrying if you’ve gone over. Of course if you’re the kind of person who’s sensitive enough to buy an Aqualim, you are probably more water-conscious than most people already. Also, there is a reset button; if you really want a longer shower you can just hit it.

But the device does address the tendency people have to linger in the shower after they’ve already washed up. Even someone who truly does not want to waste water might lose track of time, or simply not shut off the shower because hey, it feels nice in here and it’s pretty early in the morning.

Think of it as an alarm clock for the shower.

We last learned how to collect and use rainwater, now we move on to a topic the DIY crowd will appreciate, how to make your own rain barrel.

The video below captures an easy tutorial on a DIY rain barrel. Essentially you will need a food quality plastic barrel, which you can get for cheap from a local food processing facility, agri supply or feed supply shop. The rest of the supplies can be obtained from any local hardware store.

A good rain shower can yield several hundred gallons of water. Conserve this awesomeness for use later.

Quick Tips

1. Make sure you place or install the rain barrels on a level surface, as the barrels will get heavy once filled with water.

2. You want to make sure you keep small critters and debris out of your collected water, and you can achieve this, by installing mesh screens and covers on your rain barrel. You don’t want standing water attracting unsavory types, such as mosquitoes.

3. Take note of the weather, as cold temps ice and snow could possibly (or most likely) crack your rain barrel and destroy it.

4. To avoid an overfill on your rain barrel, try adding in another or adding a device which will runoff excess water into your yard.

5. Final tip is to use the collected rainwater. That is the whole point in harvesting it.

Pass on permanent press: Avoid the permanent press cycle when washing clothes, which uses an additional 5 gallons for the extra rinse.

Upgrade your equipment: Consider buying a water-saving front-loading clothes washer, or a top-loading one with no central agitator.

Water Conservation Starts at Home

The largest tidal power system

A British company has won the contract to build the world largest tidal power scheme in south Korea, costing around £500 million the system will make use of the fast flowing tides that will run through the filed of three hundred 60ft tall underwater turbines, which have been fixed to the sea bed.

These turbines are simply dropped into place on the sea bed, which will take them well away from any shipping that use the area. The British company involved is Lunar Energy, they have partnered with the Korean company Midland Power Company. Once this project is completed sometime around 2015, there will be enough power produced to power up around 200,000 homes.

Britain’s drinking water will need to have some other monitoring systems put in place ad there have been some cases of where traces of strong cancer and psychiatric drugs were detected in some samples taken.

In a statement issued by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) they said that somehow pharmaceuticals are finding their way into the drinking water system, this is something that should not happen as the there are filtration systems in place and purification treatments which are supposed to prevent anything from getting through.

This is great idea and can be made fairly cheaply and from products that are quite easily obtainable.

What is does, is you can put any water into it, and the sunlight will do the rest for you. The end product being perfectly safe drinking water.

The hardest part is the shaping of the mirror, this will take a lot of work, but once that has been done then the rest is fairly straight forward.

Among the notable calamities we see today are that of forest fires which have been headlining the news. A lot of them have originated from regions such as California and Algeria. One has to wonder what ignited all of these. Was it man or nature?

For one thing, the heat wave and the drought of rains to date have become something contributory to the whole situation. The heat may be too hot to handle and some sectors are wondering how to be able to handle such blazes in time and avoid losses of homes and lives.

The situations that have been reported over the news are pretty much alarming, especially the hard to control fires that have held concerned citizens on the brink of losing their homes. Is this another freak of natural calamities or has man something to do with this again?

Coca Cola has always been known as the worldwide sponsor and drink that most people prefer to consume. However, times are changing and people are shifting towards health drink or mineralized water to quench their thirst.

Coca Cola has been accused of stealing pure water to provide the usual softdrink beverages that people have been accustomed to. While the latter denies this accusation, it is evident that pure drinking water is indeed slowly being scarce and some people have been forced to drink Coca Cola rather than the usual healthy drinks known today.

For most events such as FIFA, Coca Cola is usually the sponsor. While people are normally given a choice on what beverage to drink, this reel from India is quite controversial. Long but something we may want to think about and ponder on.

We fear them the most but perhaps we just don’t understand why sharks were placed into existence by whatever origin they game from. They are terrors of the deep but once man has his way of drugging and hunting them down, their entire clan may just be insufficient for anyone to see at some point in time.

Sharks being tagged as dangerous sea mammal should not be a reason for man to drug them. It is simply something where both must learn to co-exist. Just like most animals that are slowly becoming extinct, we may yet soon see sharks following the same plight as well.

Global warming may be coming back with a vengeance, as it appears that because plants do not drink so much water, means that the rain water and other sources such as under ground water stores will not be depleted as fast.

In the long term the effect of this could be very serious indeed, because if this continues the water levels will build until there is nowhere else for the water to go, this could mean more and more floods.

A company based in Bristol, UK, has begun the enormous process of developing a tidal power facility. This will be based just off the north coast of Ireland.

The concept is that there are pillars that have been piled into the seabed, and giant propellers are moved by the sea, in a simple way, it is a bit like placing a wind turbine upside down and placing into a flowing river. This is basically what this looks like.

Clearly the science is going to be much more complicated than that, because if it were that simple the wind farms out at sea would have turbines under the water too.

One thing though, what happens to all of the chopped up fish?

Water is a precious and valuable commodity here in America, not to mention in developing countries. With trying to live a more eco-friendly life, conserving water, is part of the equation. There are several things one can do to conserve water, and also to use it more wisely. Read the tips below from Metro Council on Indoor Water Conservation.

Indoor Water Conservation Tips

Check for and repair leaks
Check all water lines and faucets (including outdoor) for leaks. One way is to turn off all water in your house and read your meter. Come back in 15 minutes. If the dial has moved, you have a leak.

Check for toilet leaks
Once a year, check for toilet leaks. Remove the toilet tank cover and drip 10 drops of food coloring into the tank. After 15 minutes, check for color in the toilet bowl. If you see any color, your toilet has a leak. And remember to check your flapper periodically to make sure it’s a tight fit.

Install water saving shower heads
Low-flow showerheads deliver 2.5 gallons of water or less per minute and are relatively inexpensive. Older showerheads use 5 to 7 gallons per minute.

Try a navy shower
Due to a lack of fresh water aboard ship, sailors were taught to get wet, turn off the water, soap and scrub, then briefly turn the water on to rinse — a good routine for all of us.

Take shorter showers or take a bath
Simply taking shorter showers will save gallons of water. For long exposures to the water, a partially filled bath instead of a shower will use less water.

Install a 1.6 gallon low-flow toilet
Ultra-low flow toilets use only 1.6 gallons of water per flush. Using these could cut indoor water use by as much as 20%. Older toilets use 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush.

Don’t use the toilet as a wastebasket
Using a wastebasket instead of the toilet for tissues and other bits of trash will save gallons of water that are otherwise wasted.

Install high-efficiency, low-flow faucet aerators
Older faucets use between 3 and 7 gallons per minute. Low-flow faucet aerators use no more than 1.5 gallons of water per minute. The aerators can be attached to most existing faucets.

Insulate pipes
You will waste less water waiting for the hot water to get to the faucet.
