Fun can be a vague word but if you put your wits together, you may be surprised at how you can turn used plastic bags into something useful. Like this idea which really didn’t take much thought, turning plastic bags into kites is something that anyone can really do. But for this retired engineer, Han Fushan, all it needed was some art to turn plastic bags into colorful looking kites.

Han’s plastic kites have made him into something of a local celebrity, and he is very proud of his cheap and environmentally friendly creations, which cost less than $0.15 to make.

These recycled t-shirts are called the AnvilSustainable, each using approximately three 20-ounce recycled plastic bottles, and the cotton utlized comes from farms that are in the three-year process of transitioning to organic.

The AnvilSustainable tee was timed to debut at MAGIC marketplace, one of the largest apparel trade shows, currently being held in Las Vegas. Anvil Knitwear is the largest domestic purchaser of US-grown certified organic cotton, is the world’s sixth-largest organic program, and as the fashion industry moves to more environmentally friendly practices, the notion that innovative companies can influence larger industry trends is carrying more and more weight.

Plastic bottles have been always a problem for us, as far as proper disposal is concerned. However, people still continue to endorse them and companies make them. Now we have another company who has entered the market, supposedly introducing a biodegradable plastic bottle that are said to be produced from EcoPure.

Ecopure is an additive added to the plastic manufacturing process that allows the bottles to be metabolized and neutralized on a microbial level, breaking down the plastic. ENSO bottles maintain the same physical properties and strengths as existing PET plastic bottles yet provide a more shelf stable solution than starch-based PLA materials and oxo-degradable plastics.

The bottles are biodegradable in both landfill and compost environments and can also be successfully mixed with standard PET plastic recycling.

Coca Cola Launches Eco-Friendly Bottling

Coca Cola continues to go green and this time, they have done so with their bottled packaging. Coke is calling it the PlantBottle, and they will begin marketing this eco-friendly bottle later this year with Dasani bottled water and yet unnamed of their carbonated drinks. The test will expand to the vitaminwater brand in 2010.

No more than 30% of the new bottle will be made of a material derived from sugar cane and molasses, which is a by-product of sugar production, said Coke officials. Not only is the glass fully recyclable, it makes everything taste better. Coke, milk and anything else that comes in glass is healthier and more flavorful. Forget high-tech possibilities. Return to simple, reusable glass.

Just in time for Earth Day, Sodastream has brought its revolutionary line of home soda makers to retail locations nationwide, including all Kohl’s stores, bringing PRECYCLING to a national level.

PRECYCLING — eliminating waste at its source — is the new trend this Earth Day, and it’s even better for the environment than recycling. According to the Container Recycling Institute, about 70% of soda and water bottles do NOT get recycled. Most of the waste ends up in landfills or in the ocean.

The plastic used in toothbrushes made from polypropylene plastic, is one such plastic that falls under this category. Others include:
• Cottage cheese
• Yogurt
• Cream cheese
• Ricotta cheese
• Margarine
• Hummus
• Medicine bottles
• Some plastic ice cream containers
• Food storage and take-out

Although polypropylene packaging is used for hundreds of products, a limited number of communities have curbside #5 plastic collection. Rather than trashing these resources, Preserve recycles them into useful products, like cutting boards, plates, toothbrushes, razors and cutlery.

Somerville Bans Plastic Recycling

Prior to the announcement that supermarket could no longer collect and recycle plastics, Somerville dropped the bomb that plastics can no longer be surrendered for recycling. Apparently, the problem cause by plastic in the recycling process is the culprit and from hereon, alternative means of disposing or making use of plastics seems to be needed.

A drop in the price of recycled plastic caused the changes at the curb – or, to be accurate, enforced the changes. Casella Waste Systems Inc., the city’s recycling contractor, never did accept plastic bags, said Sean Murphy, Somerville’s director of constituent services.

Some residents used them anyway to store extra bottles and cans. Casella employees simply shook the contents out of the bags, which can tangle up the machines.

CD cases are still in demand these days, particularly to store audio and video discs. However, the problem really draws in on the actual make of these CD cases. Most of them are made of plastic but we all know how plastic has become an issue as far as adhering towards the waste problems we have to settle these days.

We have seen the infusion of various eco-friendly materials, the latest of which is nonfood rice. And leading the use of these types of casings are no other than Victor Company of JVC/Kenwood Corporation.

With 10 percent of their material coming from rice rather than plastic resin, the CD/DVD cases require less petroleum to produce. And while it seems it would be more eco-friendly to recycle such cases rather than incinerate them,

This would result in 10 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions because the rice component would simply return to the atmosphere carbon that had previously been absorbed by the rice plants.

We are all aware that bottled water has long been identified as one of the contributors towards our ever growing waste problems as far as their plastic bottle is concerned. But for Fiji Water, they are prepared to back that up by applying a sustainable initiative to help protect forests on the remote Pacific Island of Fiji.

While the effort is commendable, does it make sense? We all know that plastic bottled water is dreaded and no matter what effort is done to help offset the trail, it still remains that many are praising them for their efforts.

The only concern that can draw some problems here eventually is the degree of offsetting the plastic bottles used and accumulated with the actual degree of efforts that Fiji Water is really investing in it all.

“When Fiji Water came along and said they had a business interest in protecting their watershed, that was an opportunity for us,” he says. “That nation is going to find something to ship out of Fiji. It could be logs or an industrial product. We’d much rather see it be a clean product that is produced with renewable energy.”

If this practice which was done over at RIT is any symbolization to most people today, we may just see a lot of food serving units following their lead; getting rid of the traditional plastic food trays. The concept can be somewhat likened to a packed and ready to grab food plate where you don’t have to worry about long lines and carrying those large plastic trays. You just line up, get one and then get a move on.

Aside from that, the need to clean and stock them after use can be eliminated. The need to also replace damaged ones has been eliminated. Instead, using these sugarcane-based take-home containers is the better option, pointing people to the better option of eco-friendliness and green as well.

Offering this eco-friendly biodegradable packaging does come at a price. At $0.28 cents apiece, they are four times as expensive as the previous containers.

Just when you thought that bottled water would free you from potential health risks when drinking tap water, studies show that they likewise contain some alarming bacteria that may be inherited from the water origins or from the plastic bottle that they use.

The study’s lab tests on 10 brands of bottled water detected 38 chemicals including bacteria, caffeine, the pain reliever acetaminophen, fertilizer, solvents, plastic-making chemicals and the radioactive element strontium. Though some probably came from tap water that some companies use for their bottled water, other contaminants probably leached from plastic bottles, the researchers said.

So knowing how vital bottled water is and why the price tag for consuming them has been apparently set, it would be best to check out which brands have truly passed health and safety standards. You never know when ordinary tap water may just be safer than spending for bottled water these days.

“Pique-Nique” Tax for Plastic Users in France

Every once in a while, we want to spend some time away with a friend or the family perhaps and normally picnics are not far from being considered. But while many are wondering on what food to bring and eat, others are thinking of containers and what bottled beverages such as water and juices to buy.

However, if you are in France, beware. Apparently to help control the large utilization of plastic bottles and utensils in their region. It is called as the “taxe pique-nique“.

A tax of 90 cents (71p) per kilogram (2.2 lbs) will be placed on plastic and paper throwaway cups from next year, aimed at cutting the average 360kg (793 lbs) of rubbish generated per person per year in France.

But will it work? Some doubt it.

Some said the tax would not make them change their ways. “I’m not really prepared to carry heavy plates and cutlery, so I’ll probably go on as before – it’s just another tax,” said one mother of a family picnicking in Paris. “They’d probably make more money by taxing all these new laws they keep passing,” she said.

Whatever happens there is bound to be something concrete to make it happen. A good idea but perhaps needs a little more fine-tuning.

Most eco-friendly innovations coming out today tend to have some sort of glitch that has to be ratified in order for it to be free from criticism. In this specific case, BioPlastics has indeed been correctly tagged as the better option for petroleum based plastics, but it still has some hang-ups. Even if one of its marketing points is that it is biodegradable!

If you are a consumer that could care less, it all ends there. But, for curious minds and people who want a deeper understanding, there is a point of criticism. In this case, being biodegradable is only the top of it all. There is still a process to make the plastic biodegradable and, for sure, there are elements in the biodegrading process that may need further evaluation before products such as BioPlastics can be 100% eco-friendly.

Many of the bioplastics are also contributing to the global food crisis by taking over large areas of land previously used to grow crops for human consumption.

The market for bioplastics, which are made from maize, sugarcane, wheat and other crops, is growing by 20-30% a year.

The industry, which uses words such as “sustainable”, “biodegradeable”, “compostable” and “recyclable” to describe its products, says bioplastics make carbon savings of 30-80% compared with conventional oil-based plastics and can extend the shelf-life of food.

Long time Olympic advertiser Coca Cola is not purely focused on getting noticed through its various streamers and ads. Actually, they are going beyond promoting their product and focusing on the green efforts.

One such practice is the collection of used pet bottles that shall be recycled and reused with the help of BOCOG and the City of Beijing. So, if you think Coca Cola is just concentrating on making sure that their advertising at the 2008 Beijing Olympics is the only thing going on, they are also trying to be responsibly green while the world is competing for the gold and supremacy at the games.

“Coca-Cola is promoting recycling at the Beijing Games with extensive signage and numerous recycling bins,” reports David G. Brooks, General Manager of the 2008 Olympic Project Group. “And we are very happy to report that all PET plastic bottles collected from all official venues will be fully recycled into valuable reuses, through a Coca-Cola partnership with BOCOG and the City of Beijing.”

Phthlates, a chemical used to soften plastic will be partially banned by the United States government soon due to findings that health concerns may be in peril. Among the products falling under the plastic softener area include children’s toys. Hence, putting the life of a child in danger is something that has to stop and with the drive of the US government to put a halt to these harmful toxins, a lot of lives can be spared.

The chemicals, known as phthalates, are found in hundreds of household items, including soft plastic toys and other baby products, such as teethers, bath books, and rubber ducks.

Studies have found exposure may cause long-term health effects, including cancer, as the chemicals can interfere with the development of the hormone and reproductive systems.

But suffice it to say, when a glass bottle isn’t recycled, it sticks around for a really, really long time. Here is an idea. We all know the growing concern for plastic bottles and rather than have problems on how to be able to dispose of them, why not recycle them into something useful in homes? Something like a great carpet from the recycled materials? Not a bad idea.

Mohawk Carpet does just that. It collects these used recycled bottles by the bale and then broken up, sorted, chipped, cleaned and then melted. After the whole process is finished, they are molded into threads and spun into yarn and later on made into the eco-friendly carpet.

Perhaps this can severely help in addressing the recycling problems of these plastic bottles. Not all people are aware of their use and with that, are a real problem as far as waste management is concerned.

Plastic bottles are a huge environmental problem. An environmental advocacy group, Food and Water Watch, says each year, the bottles used for water alone consume 47 million gallons of oil and generate one and a half million tons of waste. But the bottles are high quality plastic- that make great carpet at the same cost.

But Americans only recycle about one in four of the plastic bottles they use. Sadly, our landfills are carpeted with a solution that is going to waste.

Plastic has been known to be a bane which makes most bottled water fall under scrutiny for its whole social irresponsibility in the world today. We all know the value of bottled water since health is at stake. But apparently, the matter of containers have been the real issue rather than the content.

Dallas has come up with an alternative in manufacturing 30 percent less plastic of bottles to store bottled clean water. While this is totally commendable, it still remains that plastic is still in the air. We have yet to see an alternative container that makes of zero plastic.

The new water bottling plant just opened by Nestle Waters North America in South Dallas uses sleek bottles that use 30 percent less plastic than standard water bottles.

So less fuel is burned trucking the filled bottles to thirsty consumers, mostly in Texas, the company said.

Which is a great thing because it has been estimated that over a million birds and sea mammals are killed each year from being caught up in or by eating plastic that has been away.
