Toyota Starts Focus on Cash for Clunkers Program

Most car dealers are now coming out with their list of cars eligible for the Cash for Clunkers program. Included in that batch is Toyota which has officially revealed its lineup of cars which consumers can consider getting after trading in their vehicle. There are 25 Toyota models offered which will qualify for car rebates ranging from $3,500 to $4,500.

The program will start today until November 1 or until they last. All Toyota and Scion passenger cars and most Toyota trucks, vans and SUVs are eligible for government incentives under the program. In addition, some Lexus models also qualify.

For the interested parties, you can check out the Toyota website to see the complete list of qualifying models. You can also make the necessary computations for what car you are trading in versus the Toyota model you plan on buying or leasing.

Mitsusbishi Motors may be quietly lurking and studying in the background. While is has not leaked any information with regards to its bet in the electric and hybrid vehicle binge, it may have a vehicle in the fold soon but focusing more on carbon emission issues above anything of the eco-friendly issues surrounding us today.

In case you don’t know what the BS IV certification is, it stands for Bharath Stage IV, referring to the emission norms set by Automobile Research Association. And with that said, the Mitsubishi Outlander has now safely used this certification to classify its popular SUV in India as eco-friendly which is sure to entice a lot of attention as far as the turn towards eco-friendly vehicles in the world today.

This Mitsubishi vehicle received the ‘AAEN0339’ certificate on 30th May 09. As discussed in the first half of the article, to protect the environment even the Government has to step up and introduce stricter rules and regulations that will keep a check on pollution. The Government of India brings in their BS IV emission norms that involves stringent rules to curb the pollution caused due to the automobile emissions.

Launched in India in October 2008, the Outlander currently carries a price tag of Rs. 20.75 lakhs ex showroom and also greets its customers in Petrol variants.

Ghent Belgium To Go Vegetarian Once A Week

Interesting story coming from across the pond in Ghent, Belgium. The city announced a few days ago it will go vegetarian once a week because of environmental reasons.

They mention in a news story that civil servants, councillors along with local politicians will be the first to begin the city program, followed by school children in September. That is quite progressive, good for Ghent.

Since the UN last Summer researched and concluded that raising
livestock accounts for more than one-fifth of global gas emissions, the city of Ghent hopes that by going veggie (even if only weekly) will lessen its carbon footprint and help with a growing obesity problem.

It’s exciting to see such progress coming from such a small city as Ghent. Raising animals for food is bad for the planet, for the animals,and is terribly expensive. We salute Ghent and hope other cities nearby follow suit.

Ghent Belgium To Go Vegetarian Once A Week

Air Forces Make Use of EcoPower Engine Wash System

The military and air force are surprisingly doing their share of following an eco-friendly route. To clean their aircrafts, an EcoPower Engine Wash System is something that aids them in doing so. EcoPower builders claim washing the engines will reduce engine fuel burn by as much as 1.2 percent.

“C-17 (Globemaster III) engines washed using the EcoPower Engine Wash System have shown measurable improvements in fuel efficiency and cooler operating temperatures,” said Master Sgt. Richard Fults, the AMC C-17 propulsion superintendent. “The cooler exhaust gas temperatures also decrease heat stress on these engines, which benefits us in two ways. First, we see the engines are staying on the wing longer, and second, we are seeing gains in terms of preventive maintenance.”

EcoPower wash contractors also claim that by using their system, as much as three pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every pound of fuel saved will be eliminated from the atmosphere.

Taiwan can be seen as trying to resolve the fuel problem with their rampant turn towards the use of scooters but perhaps taking it up a notch by replacing them with the electric ones can really make them look eco-friendly.

Perhaps when they first thought of the scooter use, eco-friendliness was not yet that in talk as far as carbon emissions are concerned. But now, the reality is that aside from fuel, you have to address the pollution problem as well and when in Taiwan, you will notice that the atmosphere is different.

The shift towards lesser polluting scooters can indeed be helpful to their cause. They just have to realize that their air is not that safe at the moment if they continue with their current gas-powered scooters.

Taiwan Should Try Electric Scooters

Rarely would we consider the usual refrigerators as posing problems to the environment but perhaps looking up close and considering the elements needed to run them can orient us on why they pose as an environmental threat.

Apparently, a lot of it has to do with the chlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons for insulation that affect the ozone layer. Apparently, there is an improved version of the GE Monogram that will use another hydrocarbon, cyclopentane, but will reduce pollution and the risk of flammability.

GE hopes to replace the hydrochlorofluorocarbon-based refrigerants now common in the U.S. The resulting appliance would have far lower emissions. Isobutane is also being tested for use in the Monogram line of refrigerators and is expected to be on sale in early 2010.

If you think carbon emissions are primarily caused by gas-belching vehicles then guess again. This time around, even the standard gas-powered home mowers need to watch out as there are new emission rules that will be enforced to lower the emissions that they cause each time home owners decide to have their lawns trimmed.

Beginning in 2011, new gas-powered lawn and garden equipment of less than 25 horsepower will be required to reduce emissions by 35 percent, and all gas-powered recreational boats must reduce emissions by 70 percent in 2010, according to new EPA regulations

Old computers and peripherals have become a growing concern for most people who want to dispose of these technology gadgets. While many try to get rid of them the natural way, like donating them to schools for the use of the youth, it just remains that they will still come to a point where definite disposal will be needed.

Computers and gadgets are no doubt rampant when it comes to demand and use. The fast changing times of having to upgrade and purchase new computer products in the market have relegated old ones to the trash bin which of course need the proper means of being disposed.

In Mumbai, here is a great way of disposing them with proper monitoring to make sure that they are indeed put to waste. It does include a little bit of manual labor but the fact is they have come up with a great alternative towards proper disposal of e-waste.

The discarded hardware is taken to a shredder at the company’s plant on a conveyor belt.

After that, its components are segregated through a metal extractor. Then, workers manually separate the plastic from the metal.

And if someone has issues with data security, the entire process is filmed in the mobile van and the CD is handed over to them.

The initiative is a hit with corporates and in just three months, Eco reco already has 50 clients.

”Earlier, we used to donate to schools thinking we have done charity but we were in turn putting our problem onto someone’s head,” says T R Doongaji, MD, Tata Services Limited.

If the 21st century is powering down the information superhighway, the least we can do is minimise our carbon footprint.

I just read the scariest post evah, lawyer guy Al Nye writes in his blog, that a chief energy advisor mentions that the gas prices we are seeing today of $4- $5 per gallon of gas, are in the near future gonna be known as “the good ole days”.

$12 to $15 per gallon of gas. Those are insane numbers, and all heck is going to break loose, if gallon prices went up that high. I shudder to think what will happen to the world as we know it. I hate to get all dramatic, but just think about it for a moment. It would cost most Americans like $200 bucks a week to fill up. That is simply not possible for many. I envision mass transit also being affected, as those who cant afford gas, would have to take buses and trains to get to and from work, etc.

Bike sales would go up, which is a positive. (for biker sellers) Hey, entreprenuer types, there is a fledging business idea for you. Start a bike business. Not the electric bike kind, just the regular old-fashioned human powered type bicycles.

Even the car that he drives is ultra green, the Lexus LS 600h is the ultimate green driving machine.

Now being a star and a knight, Lexus thought that this would be a good idea to actually give him the car; it’s true what they say more money that you have, the less you have to pay out on things. Anyway Lexus has given Sir Paul the car, but this one had been built in Japan, and flown all the way to England. Producing a carbon footprint for the car that is the equivalent of driving it around the world six times, nice!

The 3 R’s (Recycle Reduce Reuse) – What are you recycling? Are there more things that can be recycled at your company? Take a look at something as simple as the ink in your office printers. The ink can be refilled at Cartridge World, versus buying brand new each time. This method is two-fold in that it conserves and will save you money, too. The ink for my small home office printer brand new costs about $25, but to refill at Cartridge World, it sets me back all of $13.

Use Energy Efficient Products – More and more major manufacturers are creating energy efficient products. Look for the EPA’s label titled “Energy Star” which certifies the item as meeting standards for energy efficiency.

Enlist a Consultant – If your wanting to go big, and perform a complete overhaul of your operations, your best bet is to seek the services of a consultant. Find an architect or interior designer that specialize in green design and/ or green renovation. If you’re wanting to green the outdoors part of your company, seek the services of a professional eco friendly landscaper.

As far as the state of the planet is concerned, we can all look at ourselves once we want to find out who is to blame is concerned. We have been experiencing changes in our weather and while we may find ourselves in urban places that may seem far from harm, we have to consider the Arctic regions which cannot have the same flexibility as far as climate changes are concerned.

Notching up the temperature can prove to be dangerous and once that happens, it will show us a certain degree of climate change disturbance. Indeed, it does seem risky but in the end, consumers will still be the culprit of it all.

Most of the problems we have today are man-made and while our efforts to turn to green living may be laudable, it still remains that we would not be in this place if we had already made preliminary presumptions regarding the whole matter.

If global inflation starts to go up at this junction, the world economy is likely to jump from the frying pan into the fire.

On balance, the conclusion of a successful climate change regime, measures to combat global warming and the reduction the emission of green house gases must not undermine growth.

A plausible solution would be to hive off a portion of growth and turn it away from consumption to anti-pollution measures without distorting competitive advantages or undermining globalisation. The Polluter Pays Principle meets this requirement – what needs to be done now is to develop the magic formula to apply it on the global stage.

Apparently, it is no longer a world where flashy cars are the first thing that people want to consider. It is now an age where people have to be wise when purchasing a brand new car and one of the key attributes is fuel efficiency. It is evident that most of these conditions stem from the fact that people today are increasingly aware of the threat of greenhouse gases and pollution and paired with the strict compliance standards that has been pegged for car manufacturers, cars being released today normally showcase this attribute to close a sale.

Hybrids, advanced diesels and green alternatives are pushing aside the traditional displays of speed and chrome at this week’s Detroit auto show, a nod to a new fuel-efficient reality for car makers.

Automakers, only weeks after Congress approved tougher fuel-efficiency requirements, are broadening their array of cars that get more on a gallon of gasoline, cutting carbon dioxide emissions and using alternative power sources.

We all hear it but are we really into it when we talk about knowing what carbon fooprints really are? Apparently, we all just get in with the times and try to mix in whenever it is mentioned but understanding what it really is should be something worth tackling.

The funny thing about it is that while we claim to understand it, it holds true that we are doing the invisible necessities in allowing it to grow.

CarbonFootprint.com describes it as “a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide.”

It has been normal practice for people to use fireworks to welcome the usher in of the New Year. However, while fireworks are expected to be awesome and a traditional way, it has likewise been usual to expect fireworks smoke after all of them have lit.

We all know that pollution has been a problem besetting us and fireworks are one of the contributing factors that have become an add-on to the problem. Local authorities in countries like the Philippines which uphold this tradition have made various steps to inform and discourage people from using fireworks. Outside that of being a global concern, fireworks can also become an issue when it comes to health problems like inhaling their fumes and physical dangers such as burns.

It is indeed the season to be merry and feasting but while we are experiencing this privilege, we also must take responsibility in the aftermaths that may occur during and after the Christmas season. We find ourselves in the midst of a lot of food and activities in line with the holidays and while most would just love to savor the moment, it would be best to consider the carbon footprints generated from it.

The food we prepare alone carries the carbon footprints that should be attended too. The amount of energy we invest and the food we eat, most of them have varying factors that we should put into consideration. While it may sound like a party pooper, we just have to take account that all of these are results from our lackadaisical attitude towards protecting our environment today.

“Everything we do and everything we buy creates energy.

“We took into account direct emissions – such as the energy used when a light is turned on – and indirect emissions, which is the energy used to grow or manufacture a product.”

Christmas dinner alone will create a mountain of waste, including peelings from 240 million sprouts across the UK.

Adding to the piles of waste will be peelings from 105 million potatoes and 20 million carrots.

It may surprise you to hear that a bottle found on the east coast of the states has a smaller carbon footprint when it comes from France, than the equivalent bottle that has been shipped in from California.

The is strange yet surprises announcement comes from Tyler Colman, from DrVino.com who has studied the way that a bottle of wine is transported, and apparently because of the wine from France is transported in containers it works out better for the environment than being transported by truck from California.
