Tropical Storm “Ondoy” Causes Floods in the Philippines

In case you don’t know, the Philippines is always a prime candidate for floods each time the rainy season hits. The usual regions are prepared for it but certainly not the places such as the National Capital Region where flooding was manageable. That is not the case today when tropical storm “Ondoy” brought havoc to the Philippines, leaving lots of people stranded and people in low areas climbing to the roofs to avoid the watery wrath of this storm.

No one forecasted that this tropical depression would be this bad. The rains poured all night until today causing monstrous traffic jams and people fleeing for higher ground. In fact a lot of people went to their home’s rooftops for dryer ground, groping in the dark since power was shut down in the flood-ravaged cities of Manila and its neighboring provinces.

Mobile communication was erratic and many people are asking for help. The sudden need for rafts and rubber boats were being clamored along with prayers that the rains would stop. This day, the Filipino community get a courtesy call on what global warming and climate change is really all about. After these floods subside, will the Filipino people finally wake up to reality that these events are just a glimpse of what global warming can do if it is not addressed soon? This is a wakeup call and certainly eyes have been opened.

With Earth Day but two days away, one way to celebrate is by attending a local activity or event.

How To Find Earth Day Events Near You

The Earth Day website is a great resource for finding local Earth Day events and activities near you. You can search via keyword, by date or by location. When the list populates, you get access to a Google map and full event details, such as hours, activities planned, and the ability to register directly on the site.

NOTE: I conducted a search for an Earth Day event in my local zip code and found a few events, but what would be really cool is to be able to use both the (location and date) search feature together. This way when you do a search by location only events still active and or upcoming show up.

Keep in mind many different organizations, clubs, schools, businesses and associations are celebrating the 40th Annual Earth Day. So finding something interesting, smart, cool, family-friendly, or fun should not be too hard.

Here’s hoping you find what you’re looking for, to get your green on…in 2009!

It sounds so amazing that it could have true, in fact an iceberg floating down the river Thames is not a normal occurrence, at least I have never seen it before. However, an iceberg with a stranded polar bear and its cub on, well it just has to be a great piece of PR.

Of course this is the launch of a new natural history TV channel called Eden and the iceberg apart from giving the channel some great publicity, is intended to make people aware of climate change. It took fifteen artists two months to construct.

Ceiling Fans Can Cut Down Energy Consumption

There are two things that people want to resolve today: get proper ventilation against crazy climate changes and reduce energy consumption. Air conditioning is at its peak during hot days and apparently thanks to climate change, we no longer know when that is. In fact, if before you knew which months that your air conditioner would be less utilized, now you have to consider using it extensively.

So how do people address this? Well there is the usual ceiling fans which may solve this problem. Known to be lesser in energy consumption, they have their ways of providing the proper room temperature in your home. Some homes have them while others are contemplating on it. After reading this, do not be surprised if you find yourself rushing to the nearest store to get one and install it immediately.

Ceiling fans reduce energy consumption by decreasing the use of air conditioning. In summer, they create a downdraft which increases the rate of evaporation of moisture on the skin. In the winter, they de-stratify the air, displacing the heated layer that rises to the ceiling with cooler air from the lower levels of the room.

Fans are operated with a clockwise rotation in the winter to create an updraft and counter clockwise direction in the summer to create downdraft. This direction is determined as you look up at the fan.

The amount of air movement is a function of the size of the blades and their pitch, which varies from about

12 to 20 degrees, says Goemans. Other factors include the distance from the ceiling and between the blades, as well as the length of the blades to the size of the room.

I just read the scariest post evah, lawyer guy Al Nye writes in his blog, that a chief energy advisor mentions that the gas prices we are seeing today of $4- $5 per gallon of gas, are in the near future gonna be known as “the good ole days”.

$12 to $15 per gallon of gas. Those are insane numbers, and all heck is going to break loose, if gallon prices went up that high. I shudder to think what will happen to the world as we know it. I hate to get all dramatic, but just think about it for a moment. It would cost most Americans like $200 bucks a week to fill up. That is simply not possible for many. I envision mass transit also being affected, as those who cant afford gas, would have to take buses and trains to get to and from work, etc.

Bike sales would go up, which is a positive. (for biker sellers) Hey, entreprenuer types, there is a fledging business idea for you. Start a bike business. Not the electric bike kind, just the regular old-fashioned human powered type bicycles.

Sir Paul McCartney has a reputation as being very green and eco friendly, yet in his life time he must have flown thousands and thousands of miles all around the world, but we forgive him because he is now making up for it by promoting a green life style. Even the car that he drives is ultra green, the Lexus LS 600h is the ultimate green driving machine.

Now being a star and a knight, Lexus thought that this would be a good idea to actually give him the car; it’s true what they say more money that you have, the less you have to pay out on things. Anyway Lexus has given Sir Paul the car, but this one had been built in Japan, and flown all the way to England. Producing a carbon footprint for the car that is the equivalent of driving it around the world six times, nice!

The chain of destruction caused by climate change continues to spread and today the amount of food that most of us need to survive are being affected. Such is an issue plaguing the whole world and while rations are being stocked up, you cannot help but wonder if this issue will indeed be sufficient.

There are people who panic buy in a way, stocking up their pantries and making sure that they have the necessities of food requirements of their bodies while at the same time trying to avoid the continuous rise in costs. Many of us call it an economic catastrophe but with that in mind, the only thing we can do right now is hope and pray that this dilemma does not get out of hand.

“Due to climate change, some crops will be negatively affected. Occurrence of more extreme events will affect agricultural production,” Cruz said in a phone interview.

Nilo, meantime, said “it is likely that climate change will aggravate the world food crisis due to frequent droughts and floods that could destroy crops.”

Dengue Cases Caused by Climate Change

We all want to stay as fit as possible but apparently, there are some factors like climate change which we cannot avoid. For countries like the Philippines, a well-known but deadly disease like Dengue will feast on such an opportunity and even go to the extent of claiming lives despite numerous health warnings regarding the spread of this epidemic.

Worst of all, it is the children who will be sitting ducks. While adults have a high immunization to these diseases, they are still not spared. Dengue is a virus that is hard to avoid and adding the problems of garbage and waste to countries like the Philippines, you can imagine the high risk setting that this country is sitting on.

Dengue is just one disease. There are other potential health risks such as Typhoid and Malaria cases that are leading the illnesses in this Asian country. It can only get worse as climate change issues continue to worsen.

“In the Philippines, there already are trends of increasing number of hot days and warm nights, but decreasing number of cold days and cool nights. Other extreme weather climate events like intense rains have been seen to be more frequent.”

Some may call the Blue Alert by Greenpeace as fictitious but it can happen if our current situations are any indication. Global warming works both ways. It is melting the ice caps and also causing problems as far as trying to survive the abnormal temperature we are experiencing anywhere today. With due emphasis on the first issue, the continuous rise in temperature can be likened to melting ice in our refrigerators. Every year there is a 5 degree increase in temperature and if the polar ice caps are any indication, it is not only the creatures up there who will have problems. All of us are.

Ice turns to water and once that happens, we can see that the very land we are stepping on will slowly be whittled down due to excess fluids. So with nothing to step on, where do we go? So if you see the polar bears and penguins up there having nothing to set foot on, just wait a couple of years more. You may find yourself in the very same situation.

According to a report titled Blue Alert by Greenpeace, if present trends are any indication, there will be a five-degree increase in temperature over the next hundred years.

This will submerge large areas and displace around fifty million people in India alone. A policy change, the report says, can still avert a two-degree rise in less than a decade.

The Dreaded Changing Weather of Climate Changes

The Dreaded Changing Weather of Climate Changes

People Power Fight Global Warming

People Power is a familiar term when you want to make your voices known and fight the governing bodies of your country. It is a famous term in the Philippines. But in this case, the cause is for something else; fighting global warming.

This time, this takes place in Switzerland. You may say that it has some political inclinations involved since it concerns the Swiss government’s move in tackling global warming and green issues. Apparently the new measures do not sit well with the green standard society in the country.

A people’s initiative calling for the government to slash greenhouse gases by 30 per cent by 2020 is set to come to a nationwide vote.

Pressure is mounting on the authorities to do more to fight global warming in Switzerland, especially after the government’s latest package of measures met with a mixed response.

People Power Fight Global Warming

Sharks Add to Global Warming Woes

Apparently, melting the ice is not enough reason for sea life in Antarctica to thing about. While we know that the normal creatures like the penguins and the polar bears may soon have no more ice land to walk, you have to consider that outside drowning, the dangerous creatures of the deep known as sharks may soon be wandering along the murky waters.

The main reason here is the climate change. The cold climate is a main reason why sharks do not frequent the Antarctic region. But thanks to global warming, the imminent threat, such a change in temperature has become all the opening that they need to expand their territorial exploration and find new prey to feed on.

“As a result, the Antarctic seafloor has been dominated by relatively soft-bodied, slow-moving invertebrates, just as in ancient oceans prior to the evolution of shell-crushing predators,” she told a news conference Friday on the sidelines of the conference.

But global warming has already pushed temperatures up by one to two degrees in the past 50 years, and the waters could become hospitable to sharks within the next 100 years, she said.

“The water only needs to remain above freezing year round for it to become habitable to some sharks, and at the rate we’re going, that could happen this century,” Wilga said.

“Once they get there, it will completely change the ecology of the Antarctic benthic community,” she said.

Sharks Add to Global Warming Woes

King Penguins on the Brink of Extinction

Thanks to global warming those lovable creatures we see on television, the King Penguins, are now on the verge of impending extinction thanks to global warming that has been hitting the Antarctic region. A lot has to do with the declining sea temperatures to which they are not used to. Because of this, they are forced to travel farther for food and seek the proper climate to soothe their needs.

Their numbers are declining and unless some alternative means to help save them is done, we may see them as a thing of the past.

“We wanted to see what effect climate change was having on the breeding and survival of the penguins,” said lead study author Yvon Le Maho, research director at the National Center for Scientific Research in Strasbourg, France.

The study appears today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

King Penguins on the Brink of Extinction

As far as the state of the planet is concerned, we can all look at ourselves once we want to find out who is to blame is concerned. We have been experiencing changes in our weather and while we may find ourselves in urban places that may seem far from harm, we have to consider the Arctic regions which cannot have the same flexibility as far as climate changes are concerned.

Notching up the temperature can prove to be dangerous and once that happens, it will show us a certain degree of climate change disturbance. Indeed, it does seem risky but in the end, consumers will still be the culprit of it all.

Most of the problems we have today are man-made and while our efforts to turn to green living may be laudable, it still remains that we would not be in this place if we had already made preliminary presumptions regarding the whole matter.

If global inflation starts to go up at this junction, the world economy is likely to jump from the frying pan into the fire.

On balance, the conclusion of a successful climate change regime, measures to combat global warming and the reduction the emission of green house gases must not undermine growth.

A plausible solution would be to hive off a portion of growth and turn it away from consumption to anti-pollution measures without distorting competitive advantages or undermining globalisation. The Polluter Pays Principle meets this requirement – what needs to be done now is to develop the magic formula to apply it on the global stage.

Consumers Pay Dearly for Climate Change

Polar Bear Species Endangered

Polar bears, those furry white creatures usually stocked up in the Arctic have long been tagged as endangered and while official announcements are to be made soon, it is not really surprising. Rather, the more serious issue is how to help them rather than watch them drown.

Technically, it has been man made. They are not the hunted game animals but the continuous disregard of man on the effects of his actions towards global warming through pollution has made it evident that the polar ice caps are indeed melting. And while they are out somewhere relaxing, the heat is up there and the actual victims are the polar bears which are now joining the list of animals on the endangered list.

The LA Times says the ruling on the bear’s endangered status could come as soon as this week, perhaps making it the “first species to be listed as threatened with extinction primarily because of global warming. It also says that groups representing oil and gas industry parties are threatening their own legal actions should the bear actually be listed.

Apparently while we are all heaving a sigh of relief from some signs of improvement on our environment, do remember that we have a whole world that has to be covered. There is still a lot of things to do and for places such as the Greenland Ice and the Amazon Rainforests, they are just some of the overlooked places in the world that may just have some changes critical towards global warming.

These are tipping points and one drastic change can go off like a chain reaction. While we want to get immediate results, we just have to broaden our considerations and this includes the areas that have not shown any real improvement just yet.

“The greatest and clearest threat is to the Arctic with summer sea ice loss likely to occur long before, and potentially contribute to, Greenland ice sheet melt,” they wrote in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“Tipping elements in the tropics, the boreal zone, and west Antarctica are surrounded by large uncertainty,” they wrote, pointing to more potential abrupt shifts than seen in a 2007 report by the U.N. Climate Panel.

2 Billion Dollars for Climate Change from Bush

Is $2 billion dollars enough to help support the world in combating the issue of climate change as far as the United States is concerned? Highly unlikely. While the amount is indeed a generous one, the world needs more than money to make a drastic turnaround from the impending disasters we find ourselves in.

Money is a good option to combat global warming but it is not the only recourse. President Bush has finally realized its threat and while the aid seems to be a good one, it just goes to show that the delays have made the issue grow from bad to worse. More has to be done and we are not only talking about money here.

“Still, $2 billion is a very small amount of money given the scale of the problem. China alone is investing over $100 billion a year through its state-owned enterprises in new energy projects and resources, mostly in oil and coal-fired electricity,” said Clapp.

If you haven’t noticed, we have been experiencing strange climate changes all throughout the world today. Cold and warm weather are usually normal for us, but apparently, many of these usual cycles have taken a different route. Just take the past holiday season for one. Normally, we know that it would be cold practically once the month of November sets in. Yet in some places, the climate was unusually warm. The answer? Climate change.

Many of us have become sick due to the abnormal weather in our areas. The best witnesses to these claims are the doctors. They are the ones treating the people and rather than conclude that verbal viruses are the reason, it is obvious that the problem lies solely on the changing weather that we are witnessing. Our bodies are not accustomed to these changes and hence the reason for us being sick at times.

So this is coming from the doctors and physicians all over the world. Address the climate change issue to lessen the number of sick people today.

A group of population health experts is sounding alarm bells about the risk to human health posed by climate change.

And they say the poorest people in the poorest countries will be the worst hit.

In a paper published in the British Medical Journal, they’ve called for doctors and other health professionals to take a leading role in planning for the coming health problems.

Greenland Ice Melts Caused by Global Warming

Whenever there is something that has been happening today as far as environmental issues like the latest from the Greenland ice melting is concerned, all directions are thrown the way of the global warming issue that seems be growing seriously through the years. The climate changes have been confirmed to be the problem based on records that were compiled by the scientists coming from the UK, Belgium, Denmark and the United States.

It is practically a done deal when it comes to supporting conclusions. Global warming is a reality and close to everything that concerns the environment has been linked to it.

‘Our statistical analysis suggests that southern Greenland climate is currently responsive to general Northern Hemisphere warming,’ the scientists conclude. ‘As a consequence, the GrIS [Greenland ice sheet] is likely to be highly susceptible to ongoing global warming, in which Greenland temperatures are predicted to increase ~1° – 8°C by 2100.’

‘Our work shows that global warming is beginning to take its toll on the Greenland ice sheet which, as a relict feature of the last Ice Age, has already been living on borrowed time and seems now to be in inexorable decline,’ commented Dr Edward Hanna of the University of Sheffield, who led the research. ‘The question is can we reduce greenhouse gas emissions in time to make enough of a difference to curb this decay?’

Global Warming is not solely about looking out for what problems it may bring towards us. Rather, it is also considering the natural resources and creatures that are living with us. One of them are the fishes that we often look towards to for food. The oceans are being threatened as well and just like us, their environment is being threatened by the growing problem of global warming.

Now if it so happens that these sea creatures would suffer the wrath of global warming, then it will boomerang towards us since we don’t have the necessary brain food from these fish creatures to see in the market anymore. We will have lesser options on what food to eat. From here we can see that the whole global warming mess is really a chain reaction if it gets worse.

Climate change has the potential to threaten ecosystems all over the world, and those in the ocean are no exception.

Two marine ecologists led a study of the effects of climate change on the food web of the Bering Sea, which currently provides about half of the fish caught in U.S. waters each year and nearly a third caught worldwide.

“All the fish that ends up in McDonald’s, fish sandwiches — that’s all Bering Sea fish,” said Dave Hutchins of the University of Southern California, whose former student at the University of Delaware, Clinton Hare, led the study.

“As the main providers of capital to the global economy, and with their expertise in risk management, banks can do much to combat climate change,” says the report.

“Most leading banks are addressing climate change as a risk-management issue as they would other credit, operational and reputation issues,” it adds. “Banks will come to realize that climate change affects all facets of their business and all classes of investing.”

Happy New Year! While 2007 showcased a lot of efforts originating from various countries and organizations, the climate change awareness has indeed been astounding. However, it still remains that a lot of things have to be addressed and if we are to turn things around as far as the green movement and awareness is concerned, lots of it are expected to continue in 2008.

Look back and enumerate the countless efforts, you would think that we are gaining headway. On the contrary, unless we spread the world more, we can soon see it as playing on a tipping scale. We make a good deed only to see it negated by another. But who knows? Maybe 2008 can spring up some surprises and we may save the world yet.

This is the city swing, which is supposed to be the future of the taxi in town near to where you live. This exciting and innovative idea will be the solution to the problems of pollution and of course congestion which together mean good news for all of us.

The vehicle will be able to carry three people including the driver, it is only around a third of the size of a car, so the advantages are obvious, but will we ever see it on the streets? Like many concept vehicles it is merely an idea and will most of the time will never be seen. But this should be seen and used it’s a great idea.

Smoking ban causes eco problems

You would have thought that by imposing a smoking ban in public places in the UK that this would mean that there would be a cleaner society, but however this is not the fact, because the smokers are still smoking, they have just moved outside.

So consider this, there is still the smoke, the litter from cigarette ends, which also pollute water as they often end up in the road and then down the drains and finally most bars provide patio heaters outside which produce 282,000 tons of Co2 per year, which is 260,000 tons more than before the ban.

So while banning smoking may be ok for bars etc, it may not be good for the environment.

Even with the usually looking cold snow we see often, it seems that the weather has indeed played a vital cog in making skiing in the Alps something to think twice these days.

But just the same, when you go out skiing, dress up just in case. All of us have our own level of withstanding the heat and for some, the cold climate can be of varied preferences depending on how we feel like it.

The dreaded part of the year is when the rainy seasons come. While we have all been accustomed to knowing when they will strike, it has become increasingly obvious lately that timetable has turned for seasons in our regions due to climate change. Worst, the storms seem to be more harmful, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming lives as well.

We often hear now of flooded regions and people left homeless. Just check out the mess Typhoon Mina left lately. There are even some people left due to mishaps of drowning or landslides. As a whole, the storms harassing us today are no joke and we have climate change to thank for it. They are for real and unless we are careful, we may find ourselves among the victims soon. It is best to be on alert and take precautionary measures before they even think of striking us.

We all know the impending danger that climate change provides for us and if we are not careful with out actions and decisions, we may end up aggravating the whole issue rather than resolving it.

We constantly hear bickering on what right thing should be done and what people should avoid. Similar to most debates on issues today, climate change is not something that can withstand all the potential lambasting and know-it-all from people who don’t prefer to act than speak.

Let us make things straight. Talking about it and discussing it over and over again will not make climate change go away. If we act and do our own little things then perhaps it will be a different story and results may be seen.

That is perhaps the benefit of bringing these calamities to homes. People are interested. Take a look some more and you will see, the underlying factor is trying to look for the origin of it all. Global warming and climate change have a hand in it for sure.

We were warned about it from happening. Now the whole world has experienced the wrath of their fruits one after another. But the sad thing is, while we are all interested in seeing people suffer, we don’t even consider that it will eventually catch up with us. All thanks to global warming and climate change.

So much for global warming efforts but the sudden increase in storms and calamities have made us to believe the sky will indeed fall soon. Continued pollution and disregard for the safety of the environment is bound to take its toll sooner or later and while the constant climate changes have been evitable, it will only be a matter of time before we totally annihilate the skies and make the world a picture of disaster.

We have acknowledged the need to address these climate issues. However, we need to double efforts as too many lives have already been claimed. This includes calamities and states of health. We are reaching a point of no return if this keeps up and hence we should aggressively push forward if we are to continue to exist healthily in this world of ours.

Ecology is something that we all know through education and from current events. Taken as a whole, we only know of certain components such as global warming, greenhouse gases, pollution and climate change. The world is having a hard time focusing on only one of these areas.

Add to this that such concentration has not done any good. Progress has been slow and if this keeps up, another bomb similar to that atomic bomb that destroyed Japan some centuries ago will come back in the form of an ecological disaster which we have all been talking about.

We are all doing our part. But the efforts have not been realized. Hopefully people would realize that the issue may be green but it is not a laughing matter. We just have to thrive harder to meet goals and turn things around to avoid global disaster.

Now here is something good to ponder on. For people who carelessly throw away their waste, maybe they can take this cue of being charged for the amount of trash they throw away. Perhaps in this aspect, people can see the amount of trash and the effort they throw in recycling and doing their part in the whole climate change and global warming issue we all read about today.

Last week the government shelved a similar recycling idea at the last minute. Now it’s been included in the Climate Change Bill.

It’s all about reducing the amount of rubbish going to landfill sites and getting people to recycle more. But there’s no information about which councils will do it or for how long.

Masdar, meaning the source, has been mapped out to become one of the first green cities in the world today which will purely be banking on green alternative and running on renewable sources of energy.

In April 2006, Abu Dhabi decided to create Masdar – which means – the Source – in Arabic, a walled city covering 640 hectares. Promoters say it “will be living testimony to the possibility of sustainable cities.” The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, the company executing the Masdar initiative, calls it the “creation of a historic global shift to new energy sources and sustainable resource utilization.”

We all know that smoking cigarettes are proven to be harmful to people’s lives, yet all of us set this aside and just smoke anyway. Nicotine has been the main ingredient that can ignite the illness of cancer. The thing is, it only sets in after some time and not immediately. Cancer is a traitor and will hit after some time of investing and spreading its mischief inside our bodies.

In the same way, it also contributes to the pollution and health constraints the environment is suffering right now. Its fumes may not be that much but its toxic impact contributing towards climate changes due to pollution is something that affect both a person’s life and additionally the environment as well.

Given all of this, does anyone really care about them? Considering that people are still looking for cigarettes to light and where they can be bought, there is no real solution in sight. But if the ban on tobacco manufacturers pushes through, expect some changes to come along the way.

There are things we can do to be more forest-friendly and keep VIP trees standing. Tree Hugger has an article on tropical deforestation, and it points out 3 things to watch out for when shopping for wood-based products.

Use LESS new wood based products, such as furniture, instead focus on pieces made from reclaimed wood. Or go one better and look into wood that is FSC certified, which means the wood comes from forests that are sustainably managed.
When buying coffee, look for packages marked as having shade grown coffee beans.
Use forest friendly paper, in other words recycled paper, Staples has a ream of *100% Recycled Copy Paper for $6.99 that no new trees had to die for, and also because it doesn’t come from new trees, less water and energy also play into its creation. (100 % post consumer content)

As a rule, recycled is usually your best bet, and recycled paper is now available at most of the major office supply stores.

For most manufacturing companies, pollution is one thing that they are sure to encounter. Whether this be waste or air pollution, their social duties to keep these things at a minimum should always be observed.

Drug companies are known to be the running resort of most people for medicines and drugs that they offer as prescribed by physicians. Some may call it ironic, but the truth is, if you want to help upkeep lives, then it starts by leading by example and controlling their trash.
