Two Companies Convert Trash to Power

We have heard of recycling and apparently one of them includes this one which calls for the conversion of landfills and then soliciting methane gas landfills. If not trapped, the rising methane becomes a greenhouse gas at least 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide and accounts for 25 percent of all methane associated with human behavior.

In the conversion process, pipes running throughout the landfill vacuum up the gases and feed them into huge combustion engines that turn a generator. The resulting electricity is then transmitted to homes and offices via the electrical grid.

This may not only be great news for finding other means of generating power but can perhaps create more jobs while protecting the environment in the process. You can view the video report here.

AT&T Revs up Wireless Recycling Efforts

In a move to lend a big helping hand to the growing problem of e-waste, AT&T has increased efforts in its recycling drive for its 2,000 and more stores in the collection of over 14 million wireless collection devices, a move that aims to improve the current issue of 13 tons of toxic wastes making their way towards standard landfills.

AT&T estimates that they will be procuring 14 million wireless devices by 2011.

AT&T has launched its goals and initiatives:

AT&T continues to provide recycling drop-off spots via all 2,000-plus retail locations nationwide, and it offers free prepaid shipping labels online at www.att.com/recycle.
AT&T has added two more ways to help make recycling easy for wireless users: free, prepaid mailing envelopes in stores and online (att.com/recycle).
Through August 2009, AT&T is working with the American Camp Association (ACA) to share its recycling mission with over 2 million children, tweens, and teens across the U.S.
AT&T is promoting wireless recycling efforts at AT&T-sponsored music and movie festivals through 2010.
AT&T’s volunteer organization, the AT&T Pioneers, continues community-based recycling drives across the U.S.
AT&T continues to offer free donation drive toolkits online, including templates for recycling bins and tips for wiping data from old phones before recycling.

We are all aware that most people don’t know how to properly dispose of electronic waste. Some would simply throw them out in the trash bin but that would only make things worse if you add all the people in the world throwing out their waste lackadaisically. Today, companies are taking the initiatives, offering to dispose of e-waste the proper way. And now, a new shop joins the mix, 1Stop Camera.

In a bid to contribute to the eco-friendly cause, 1Stop Camera has added a consumers electric recycle center in its store, allowing incoming customers to properly dispose of electronics the green and proper way.

The Green Fill Recycling Program is part of 1stop Camera’s take back effort, designed to safely dispose of consumer electronic waste in a Green manner. 1Stop camera is excited to take part in this effort to reduce landfill disposal of consumer electronics.

Rapid No Turn Composter

Here is a great addition to any home, particularly to keep order in garbage disposals. With today’s technology, the Rapid No Turn Composter is a patented three-chamber bin that turns organic matter into compost in half the time of typical methods, without requiring frequent turning for aeration.

Vegetable scraps, lawn refuse, and other raw materials are mixed in the top chamber where solar energy absorbed by the bin’s black polypropylene sides and lid (15% recycled) starts the decomposition process. After about a month, material can be easily moved to the middle chamber for further decomposition by simply pulling out a panel.

As it continues to break down, material falls into the bottom chamber where it matures into nutrient-rich compost. Apertures in the bottom chamber provide aeration that helps speed decomposition and eliminates odors. Because decomposed matter does not mix with newly added materials, it cuts composting time to as little as 12 weeks – compared to the six months required by lesser bins.

Recycling batteries takes off

The message appears to be getting through on the growing problem of disposing of used batteries with almost seven million pounds being collected and going on to be recycled. However, it is not just individuals who are responsible for the increase in recycling, business and local communities have been doing more than their fair share too.

Companies have made positive steps to recycle their unused or old batteries, along with communities who together can and will make a complete difference to the way that batteries are disposed of in a clean and sensible manner.

Child Develops Brainchild for the Homeless

It is quite surprising how a child’s imagination can turn out to be something useful for the needy. That is the case of this 9th grader, Max Wallack, who seems to have a knack of inventing things that come into mind that turn out to be very useful.

His latest idea, satisfying the issue of environmentally concerns while providing some assistance in the form of portable shelter for the homeless was something quite glaring that it is satisfying both issues with one idealistic solution. And it all came from the ideas of a 9 year old!

When Max was in Chicago to accept his prize for inventing the booster step, it bothered him to see homeless people living on the streets. In the years since, he never forgot about that, and it inspired him to create his latest invention: a shelter for the homeless made from discarded materials.

“I kept that image in the back of my mind, thinking I had to do something,” Max says. “I thought I could use some Styrofoam [and plastic] bags, and put them in a dome shape.”

Dunkin Donuts has been around for some time now and while we have seen them diminish in numbers of outlets, there are some that are still up and about. There is one outlet that has been put up in St. Petersburg, Florida, and it has been touted o be eco-friendly. In what way? Worms.

No they are not using the worms as part of their classic donuts. Rather, they are stored in a solar-powered composter.

All food and beverage waste is converted to fertilizer by a worm-filled, solar-powered composter behind the donut shop.

The worms eat the scraps and the resulting fertilizer is then provided to local farmers.

Whether this is functioning or not, you have options such as perhaps giving it to someone who needs one or leave it to rot. For the busted ones, before you take out think of the problems you will add as far as landfill issues are concerned. So what is a person to do?

For one, when you pass by certain retailers, ask or check if they can help you in any way. These days, they have certain programs on how to properly dispose of old electronic devices. Devices such as TV sets can emit lead and toxins which may come back to haunt you in terms of your health. So before you place it near that garbage can, check out first if there are people who can properly dispose or make use of it before you do anything else.

Before you toss an old TV set in the trash, think again. Experts say that can cause lasting damage to landfills.

“They have toxins like lead and other products that are bad for the environment,” said Craig Brown, general manager of a local Best Buy store.

Many retailers — including Best Buy — will take back your old TV and see that it is properly recycled.

Rent-A-Toy Promotes Recycling

Toys will always be in the demand but the real question is where are they headed after they have been used for so long by kids who seem to want a piece of everything that they see. A natural parent would normally look at toys to calm down kids who always want the first toy that they see but perhaps checking out this new venture, Rent-A-Toy, can be a better solution both environmentally and financially.

It’s called Rent-A-Toy, a new San Diego-based online subscription service allowing families to choose from more than 700 different toys for all age ranges, from Baby Einstein to Wii. Plans start at about $25 a month.

It looks like a business opportunity on one hand but if the intent is right and aimed at reducing the waste and garbage originating from used toys that are made of plastic and metal, then you can see where this is going.

The logic is really something common. Kids play with toys but reach a point where they don’t like them anymore. There are exceptions and perhaps one question that can be hurled at Rent-A-Toy would be on whether they have options to purchase just in case sentimental values step in.

One mail carrier from North Carolina has just been fined $3,000 and made to do five hundred hours of community service, because he did not deliver any junk mail on his round for seven years. Unfortunately, we all do not have these eco friendly mail carriers, so you will have to it yourself, contact the Do Not Mail list for the US or in the UK, there is always the Stop Junk Mail campaign.

Samsung Offers Eco-friendly Printers

Samsung is a brand known in the electronics world but not in printers. But while they may be known for monitors or even mobile phones, their product line also has a few of these printers in tow. In fact, to jumpstart their eco-friendly efforts, they are offering a new trade-in program (TIP) that will allow their customers to trade-in their old laser printers valued at most at $200 and then get a new one.

Not a bad deal if you want to get these new eco-friendly devices these days. A new printer may be the best bet to go eco-friendly through proper disposal of your old printer and get a new one in lieu of that.

The program began on July 1, and will run until September 30, 2008. First, the customer needs to purchase any new model Samsung printer, including laser models and MFPs. Then, visit www.samsung.com/tip to enter details about their old printer model. Results will be tabulated to determine how much the printer is worth.

Then, just fax or mail back the confirmation e-mail, along with the original proof of purchase receipt and the old product (a shipping label will be provided), and Samsung will send a cheque for the appropriate amount within 6-8 weeks once the product has been received and inspected.

Potato Waste To Produce Electricity

We have seen various alternative ways to create energy and this one is something worth looking into. From the usual solar energy panels to hydrogen power, imagine energy being generated from potato waste. Now that is something.

In my previous post I already put out a post that some groups in the world today are looking to transform their trash to energy. While there were no specifics, this is because there are a lot of different waste categories to choose from. It is not solely from “trash” alone.

Potato Waste

Farmer Philip Johnson asked Durham County Council for permission to produce electricity – enough to heat 1,200 homes – from potato waste from the Walkers’ crisp factory, in Peterlee.

With the request granted, about 1,000 tonnes of potatoes a year will be pumped through an anaerobic digester, along with about 7,000 tonnes of agricultural crops and 2,000 tonnes of manure.

That will generate 500kw of electricity for the National Grid and 8,000 tonnes of fertiliser.

Potato Waste To Produce Electricity

Ineos Plan to Turn Waste to Bioethanol

What do you do with excess garbage that landfills can no longer accommodate? For most, the immediate answer would be to recycle them. But for Ineos, turning waste into fuel is similar to turning trash to gold.

By 2011, this is what Ineos predicts to happen. They are planning to put up a large scale waste to energy facility which will ultimately produce bioethanol and help address the growing fuel problem the world is experiencing at the moment.

Ineos claims that its bioethanol, which can either be blended with petrol or replace it altogether, reduces greenhouse gases by 90% and avoids using food crops in the production process.

Mr Williams said: “The fact that we have been able to decouple second generation biofuel from food is a major breakthrough, and we expect our technology to provide cost competitive, sustainable, renewable fuels.

Well, I believe that glass bottle can be recycled easily but it does take 1 million years for it to dispose itself.

Anything plastic? Possibly 500 or more years.

Not recycling yet? Well, you should even if you don’t live in a city that poorly supports recycling.

Okay, we don’t really know whether a glass bottle takes a million years, two million years, or a million years and one day to degrade since no one has been monitoring them for that long. But suffice it to say, when a glass bottle isn’t recycled, it sticks around for a really, really long time. Glass is primarily of composed of silica—the same material as sand—and doesn’t break down even under the harshest environments. Given the relatively inert conditions of a landfill, it’s likely the bottle of beer our forefathers sipped is still at large

How Long Does Trash Really Last?

This has been a very long time coming, it the green basket ball, well actually its black and is eco friendly because it uses forty per cent recycled rubber. Now that may not seem to be much, but surely anything that is recycled is better than nothing.

However it has been estimated that when seventy of these balls are purchased, then that will be the equivalent of a car tyre, now that really does makes sense because tyres and land fill sites just do not make good partners.

To make the whole package green, the makers Wilson have also made sure that the packaging that the ball comes in use eighty per cent recycled cardboard.

UK dumps computers at tips

It seems the UK have a surplus of serviceable yet out dated computers and despite the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which should see most electrical items disposed of using the manufacturers own disposal facilities, it is estimated that some twelve and half million older laptops and PC’s have not been recycled or reused.

What’s worse is what is actually happening to these old machines. Twenty five per cent are taken to the tip, just dumped anywhere or get thrown out with the household waste. However ten per cent of people say that they have recycled their computer, while forty per cent claim to have given their old computers to friends, family or charities.

But over six million people said they leave their old computers lying around the house, garden or garage and over five million just take their old outdated machine to the local dump where they will ultimately end up in the landfill site.

Waste Management Itineraries Among Issues for Resolution

One thing that local governments have to address once a new year starts is the fact of making detailed itineraries of their plan for the coming year. The year has just started and for some counties, the best way to detail their projects for the year is how to manage and take out the trash.

Indeed, all countries have to deal with trash and waste management. It has been something that has been going on for years now. While some find the usual landfills and turn to advanced technology like incinerators and recycling to lessen the load, it still remains that they will forever be in the annals of government proceedings due to the growing issue surrounding them.

(Source) “I think what you’re going to see is a continuation of some programs and reviews and studies,” he said, citing waste management as another issue that has to be tackled because of the declining life expectancy at local municipal landfills.

Pickard, who is mayor of Elizabethtown-Kitley Township, said his own municipality is “in pretty good shape” with its landfill near Greenbush.

However, the life expectancy of landfill sites in many other municipalities has been reduced dramatically and council has been looking at various options for waste management on a regional basis.

Last month, the counties’ joint services committee, which includes Brockville, Prescott and Gananoque, agreed to hire a consultant to examine options such as gasification, incineration and other new technologies, as well as opening ED-19, a long-dormant site in Edwardsburgh-Cardinal once expected to support a countywide landfill.

Its funny how things that we take for granted are not environmentally friendly, like umbrellas, they use materials that are man made etc, however there is an alternative and one that is biodegradable too.

The frame and handle are made from bamboo and the part that stop the rain from soaking you is made from a biodegradable plastic material made from renewable resources and will totally degrade in a landfill in just over a year.

It comes in two sizes, thirty seven inches and fifty two inches in diameter.

A good use for plastic bottles

Now instead of them going to the land fill and taking hundreds of years to fade away, these have been made into something useful and indeed something worthwhile of begin called a design piece.

This one has been thought up by the Berlin based lighting designer Stuart Haygarth, who doe a good job here although from the photo it to hard to actually see what it really looks like in the flesh, or in the plastic as it would be.

A good use for plastic bottles

Bowls made from old records

This is a neat little idea that sees old long player records, softened and then shaped into a bowl before it is allowed to cool down and set into the new shape that it is in.

There are a couple of points to remember, these bowls are definitely not microwave oven proof, oven proof, should not have hot food put in them and generally should be used for fruit and potato chips.

Where Do Recycled Computers Really Go?

A new article from CNN delves into the computer recycling trade, and brings up solid but sordid details. For example, some recyclers are exporting old computers to foreign countries where they simply sit in overseas landfills un-recycled. OMG!

It is important to research a prospective recycler and find out more about the operation and its recycing process? Where do the computers go? Are they refurbished? What about computers that cannot be refurbished?

Also PC manufacuters should create components that make it easier to recycle them once they are at the end of their useful life. Some major computer manufacturers such as Apple, Dell, and HP have started to implement a give-back-program where consumers can send in their old PC or drop them off at a designated center. Hopefully other PC makers will soon follow suit.

Is recycling computers a bad idea?

No, i dont think so. It is a matter of doing some research and/ or spending a few extra dollars with a premium recycler to make sure your PC or other e-waste doesn’t end up in China or Africa un-recycled after all. Also there are a variety of things you can do with your old PC besides dropping it off at a recycling center, you can donate the used PC to a computer geek, who will refurbish it, and give it to a local church, non-profit, school, or clinic, etc. For more ideas, see my other article titled, Recycle Your PC.

Where Do Recycled Computers Really Go?

A recent UN University study into electronic waste has suggested that by the year 2020 there will be 12.3 million tonnes of this type of waste being dumped in the European Union every year. That is a lot of waste and will take up a lot of space.

But fortunately there is a solution to this problem, the European eco TV project is in place to look into this problems and have come up with an astonishing but pretty cool way of disposing of this material.

These products can be recycled and then added to building products such as ceramic tiles, to resin as an insulating material and also into making other construction materials, such as blocks and bricks.

All it needs is a simple phone call and practically anyone can contribute towards the world-based green effort that is being solicited today. Garbage and waste problems have been plaguing most parts of the world and the best way to help resolve the crisis is to call-in some concerns pertaining to the problem at hand.

Such was the alternative solution that people in countries like the Philippines had done. All it took was to inform the proper groups and organizations of the growing trash problem in their area. While this may sound like a waste of time, nothing beats the fact of going green through information solicited from a single phone call.

“I live in Baclaran, Parañaque City. I love this place, but unfortunately, I am not too proud to be here because I see piles of garbage every day. When I pass by many streets in the neighborhood, I end up feeling disgusted, disappointed and embarrassed.

“Seeing that the local government has little to offer as a solution to the problem, my family decided to do something about it and help, even in a small way.

“Three years ago, we decided to form a group composed of youngsters who were willing to join us. It started as a small team engaged in cleanup activities every Sunday. After hearing Mass, my family and I gather the children and set out, brooms and all, to clean selected streets. By doing this, we help keep our neighborhood clean and hopefully, encourage others to do the same.

“We celebrated Earth Day last April 22 with a cleanup in the Muslim community in front of the Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Baclaran Redemptorist Church), an area we had not visited before.

“We hope that encouraging activities like these will prove to be eye openers for people who do not seem to care. This way, we can show them that like everyone else, they should take an active part in caring for the environment.

We often see it in signs and are constantly reminded to put litter in its place. Some still choose to neglect the warnings and penalties included for such and would play dumb since they feel that they can throw away anything anywhere at anytime.

True, we always see trashcans all around but maybe we forget what goes inside of them. Littering is a controllable issue for now, but let us not wait for it to grow and become another factor that is governing our ecological branches today. Place litter in its place.

Landfills are known to be areas of waste. That is basically all they would be initially known for. But thanks to companies such as Pacific Renewables, they can be used as another source of alternative energy today. Bio-refineries are used to create green fuel, power and products using the said renewable source.

Imagine resorting to this kind of alternative energy source and its contribution towards the entire green environmental effort. Waste to energy is another state of the art creation that can help the world and create new products such as ethanol. Clean air and converting waste to energy, surely a dream come true for greener pastures for the world.

Turning Landfills into Renewable Energy Sources

London may ban plastic bags

British consumers use an estimated 10 billion bags in a year, that’s about 167 per person! Yet it is also estimated that Supermarket giant Tesco hand out a massive 4 billion bags per year!

The council leaders have two ideas, one is the outright ban of stores handing out free plastic bags or the alternative is to create a bag tax, which would be set 10p (20 cents) per bag, the cost will be met by the consumers, this tax has been successfully introduced in Ireland which is set at 30 euro cents (40 cents0 per bag and it is believed that there has been a reduction of around 90% since 2002.

Clearly the plastic bag issue is not just going to go away and one way or another the government and local authorities will need to act in order to stop the plastic bag situation.

That is a statistic from Wireless Recycling, on why we need to recycle our old and unused cell phones. Cell phone waste is a growing problem, it is estimated that only 1% of old cell phones get recycled or reused, while the rest end up at our landfills or lay in closets, drawers, and household boxes.

With Wireless Recycling you can do a collection of sorts, and try to gather from friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, churchmates, classmates, etc 100 or more cell phones and they then can be shipped for free to Wireless Recycling. Or you can alternatively recycle (just the few you have) and drop them off at local donation center. (for free)

There are several resources available which enable you to recycle your old and unused cell phones. Try Wireless Recycling or google cell phone recycling to find another.

Clean Up Day in Australia

Most nations have the growing problem of litter and waste management. A lot has to do with the reckless disposal of people with regards to various waste such as wrappers, leftovers and used up packaging and containers. In Australia, Clean Up Day is celebrated every March 4 of the calendar year to help fight off growing garbage and waste problems. Perhaps other countries may want to follow their lead.

Clean Up Day in Australia

Bottled water banned in San Francisco

Well in the City Departments for now, Mayor Gavin Newsom believes that the cities own water supply is just as good as any bottled water and as the State is attempting to become the “Green State” it makes sense that water in plastic bottles is on the hit list.

The ban, which started on The 1st July, will extend to include water coolers too, by the 1st December. It is believed that this move will help prevent global warming and save the taxpayer money too, which has to be good.

It is estimated that more than a billion plastic bottles from water use only, are disposed of each year in the state, most of which end up in the states landfill sites.

The various green movements that most people bank on today are indeed something to commend. But the children and teens who start making the awareness on pollution and other issues concerning climate change and green contradictions are highly laudable as well.

Teenagers should usually be worrying more about their future or enjoying their lives. But to the millions of teens that have dedicated a portion of their lives towards contributing to the cause of pollution and various global concerns today on waste is something more inspiring. Hopefully the older generation can listen and pick up some pointers from their joint efforts for a greener tomorrow for all.

We are in an age where we use plastic bottles and containers to store goods and consumable items whenever we buy them from the nearest store or supermarket. But after consuming everything that is in it, what do we do next?

If we are careless enough, we drop it on the ground, run over it, walk over it, kick it around, check it out and see what it is and so on. However, if we see no use picking it up, we tend to forget to put it in its place. This attitude alone is a sign of total disregard for environmental awareness. Let us put litter in its place. It doesn’t take much effort especially when there is the garbage can nearby.

No matter where you live in the world, there is always someone who could use something that you are about to throw away, with Freecycle both parties can get together and recycle one persons trash into another persons treasure.

The network was started in 2003, in Tucson and has now grown to 4,041 communities and 3,540,995 members worldwide.

This organization is great for organizations wishing to obtain items such as unwanted furniture etc, this is where Freecycle can really help out the planet by not wasting perfectly good items and help the less fortunate via charities who can put the items to good use.

A notable origin of unwanted waste comes from excess food that we simply throw in the trash bin. While the effort alone is a key factor adhering towards placing garbage in its place, the overlooked aspect of how spoiled food may turn into adding more problems as far as waste problems is concerned should also be checked out.

Food will decompose at any given time if not placed properly. Food leftovers or spoiled ones should be sorted and left out to be disposed properly. This is where composting comes in, placing food scraps in landfills for proper disposal proceedings.

The folks over at Nalgene, have created a simple yet profound campaign to urge us all to buy and use refillable water bottles, instead of buying the more convenient but earth-destroying disposable variety.

Their slogan is Refill not Landfill, and they state that they want to promote the use of any refillable water bottle, not just theirs. This small change can make a big difference in reducing the amount of plastic water bottles that end up as waste in our landfills, the energy used, and the oil expended to produce plastic disposable water bottles. They have created a pledge page so that you can decide to make a commitment for one week, one month, or one year to using refillable bottles.

Take the pledge here, and choose to use earth-friendly refillable water bottles, for all your outdoor and on the go needs.

Getting Drastic about Plastic at Keetsa!

Plastic Bags are used in heavy concentration, statistics are showing that “on average each person consumes over 290 plastic carrier bags per year” and that is why it is time to get drastic about plastic. The reason this is of concern to you and me, is because plastic bags do not easily or quickly de-compose, they take hundreds of years to break down into our environment, once trashed.

But there are several easy things we can do to alleviate this environmental problem. Recycle Now has a neat list for us:

6 plastic bag re-use ideas:

denying bags in the first place, is a good start
bring your own canvas bags for the trip
re-use them on your next trip
donate to local charity or goodwill shops
re-use them as bin liners for your home trash cans
re-use them to clean up after pet messes

Getting Drastic about Plastic at Keetsa!

How long does it take for items to bio-degrade?

Today through my daily research and surfing, i came across a good article on biodegradability, and just exactly what is the meaning of this commonly used word. The author states several questions should be asked when trying to label a product as biodegradable. Questions such as:

inherent biodegradability of the material?
how long it takes for the material to actually break down?
what exactly does the product or material break down into?

The issue that resonates with most Americans is the last factor for biodegradability which is, “the characteristics of the environment that the substance or material is in”, the author poses another question, “should a product be called biodegradable if it inherently has the ability to biodegrade, or should it only be called biodegradable if it also is commonly disposed of in a way in which it really will biodegrade? For example, should a paper grocery bag be labeled biodegradable? It will biodegrade if placed in nature, however it won’t biodegrade in a landfill because the conditions aren’t right”.

Here’s how long it takes for commonly used products to biodegrade, when they are scattered as litter:

cotton rags 1-5 months

paper 2-5 months

rope 3-14 months

orange peels 6 months

wool socks 1 to 5 years

cigarette butts 1 to 12 years

plastic coated paper milk cartons 5 years

leather shoes 25 to 40 years

nylon fabric 30 to 40 years

tin cans 50 to 100 years

aluminum cans 80 to 100 years

plastic 6-pack shower holder rings 450 years

glass bottles 1 million years

plastic bottles forever
