Recycled Paper Shoes Anyone?

Taiwan has been known to create some of the craziest yet fad things you can think of today and it looks like they have something that should cater to the footwear shoppers. Colin Lin came up with a different kind of concept in the design of shoes, using recycled paper to produce eco-friendly shoes and handbags. These items are said to be hot moving items in Taiwan as well as the U.S. and Europe, a lot of customers of which are eco-friendly minded consumers.

A pair of paper shoes takes 3-4 hours to make and sells for $100-150, while a tote bag takes as much as 2-3 days and can go for up to $260.

Coca Cola continues its recycling program efforts by now purchasing football-themed recycling containers from Fan Cans. Initially, they had purchased baseball-themed recycling containers as part of their “Give it Back” campaign but perhaps since it is football season, these new recycling containers fit the sporting mood of the season.

Fan Cans can be produced with team and sponsor logos in any color, making it easier for teams, sponsors, and sports facilities to “go green” in an impactful and fun way. The 45-gallon waste receptacles and recycling bins utilize up to 50% post-consumer and industrial plastic, are highly-durable for expanded service life, and are 100% recyclable at the end of their life cycle.

Halloween may be over but you know that a lot of recycled outfits were out in the market during that stretch. Among them included this Big Head Papercraft portrait which used 370 individual paper triangles to make. To come up with something like this requires some talent and geekiness. And for the sake of finding out how the person behind it was able to come out with this costume:

The first step was to model his face in 3D Studio Max. After overlaying a wireframe, he added textures in Mudbox 2010 and Photoshop CS3, before using software called Pepakura to break the model up into printable sections.

So next season, try something like this. It is bound to be a hit for the Halloween Season having a life-sized bobble head made of paper triangles.

Je Sung Park’s recyclable paper laptop that makes it easy to replace defective parts. So in short, the whole concept is about the casing of laptops which could work. Collect those old parts and turn them into something productive. This disposable and recyclable laptop may just make it through. The problem is how much?

2010 Olympic Medals to be Made of Old PC Parts

For the coming 2010 Olympics and Paralympic Winter Games, all winners will receive medals made from something recycled such as an old circuit board. Vancouver metals giant Teck Resources is producing and supplying the medals along with the Royal Canadian Mint. Apparently this is one answer to that question in mind on where the old computer and busted gadgets are going. Scraps! But these are not hideous scraps, rather they are something that most people treasure, a crowning achievement for their participation in competitions. I guess the saying is true that you garbage will come back to you, but in a different and more recipient way eh?

In an effort to do their part and contribute to the waste management control needs today, Conestoga College is embarking on a “Multi-Recyclers” program led by integrating Busch Systems Recycling Containers which are all custom-designed for academic and apartment recycling. Each classroom has been equipped with these containers in order to easily separate waste and recycling.

The program hopes to establish alternative recycling options for the school and will be employing recycling bins comprised of 35% recycled content that stack easily, in order to simplify separation and collection. This recycling container is ideal for academic environments as a result of its space efficient design, sturdy stacking, easy to clean design and effective collection of over 22 liters (per bin), of sorted recyclables and waste.

O2 Announces Online Phone Recycling

Called O2 recycle, O2 provides a new online service to help people in properly getting rid of old gadgets and get some monetary value as well. Among the gadgets that O2 will be considering include the likes of MP3 players, digital cameras, GPS devices and other consumer electronics. All you have to do is drop by their site, enter the details of your device, get an estimated value, print off a receipt while a pre-paid postage bag is sent to them to put the phone and receipt in and send back.

Once the package arrives and is found in good working order, O2 will send a text confirming the receipt of the goods and the net value will be deposited onto the customer’s account. For every device O2 will donate £1 to the “It’s Your Community” charity while the products are sold on to global markets by Redeem.

It also comes in reduced packaging and comes with an e-manual in lieu of the usual booklet type manuals that use up a lot of resources. It even comes with an called Ecomate which measures your carbon footprint.

Additionally, O2 has announced that they will be offering a free gift in the form of solar chargers or giving to charity. Or maybe you can donate to a number of worthy causes including tree planting in Ethiopia, primary education funding in Bangladesh, water systems in Africa and many more.

We have been oriented on how to recycle and properly dispose of waste. But as far as electronic items are concerned, we all know for a fact that they may very well end up as scraps or recycled at the mercy of people doing all these environmental tasks. Panasonic happens to be one of those groups and in fact, they are hosting an Electronics Recycling event at the Secaucus, NJ corporate campus starting this Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

The community is welcome to recycle the following consumer electronics items: televisions, VCRs, stereos, monitors, computers, printers, cell phones, and more. Residents are also encouraged to bring in old eyeglasses that Panasonic will donate to local charitable organizations. As a thank you to the community for participating in this worthwhile event, the first 100 participants will receive a 4-pack of AA Panasonic Evolta batteries.

In a move to lend a big helping hand to the growing problem of e-waste, AT&T has increased efforts in its recycling drive for its 2,000 and more stores in the collection of over 14 million wireless collection devices, a move that aims to improve the current issue of 13 tons of toxic wastes making their way towards standard landfills.

AT&T estimates that they will be procuring 14 million wireless devices by 2011.

AT&T has launched its goals and initiatives:

AT&T continues to provide recycling drop-off spots via all 2,000-plus retail locations nationwide, and it offers free prepaid shipping labels online at www.att.com/recycle.
AT&T has added two more ways to help make recycling easy for wireless users: free, prepaid mailing envelopes in stores and online (att.com/recycle).
Through August 2009, AT&T is working with the American Camp Association (ACA) to share its recycling mission with over 2 million children, tweens, and teens across the U.S.
AT&T is promoting wireless recycling efforts at AT&T-sponsored music and movie festivals through 2010.
AT&T’s volunteer organization, the AT&T Pioneers, continues community-based recycling drives across the U.S.
AT&T continues to offer free donation drive toolkits online, including templates for recycling bins and tips for wiping data from old phones before recycling.

AT&T Revs up Wireless Recycling Efforts

Recycle those Blown-out Inner Tube of your Bikes

People with old bike parts, specifically the blown out inner lubes, can dispose of them properly with this program that was recently launched. Together with Alchemy Goods, Performance Bicycles is launching a program called the Bike Tube Blowout starting this Friday, July 17 up to Sunday, July 19 at the Re-Grand Opening of its San Francisco store and the Grand Opening of its new store in San Mateo.

Anybody can come to Performance’s San Francisco and San Mateo stores to drop off old, unused or blown-out inner tubes for recycling (with the exception of gel-filled and/or thorn-resistant tubes). All donors will receive a $5 money card. Alchemy Goods will use the inner tubes in its popular line of messenger bags and accessories, which are made entirely through recycling.

Who Buys Recycled Glass Bottles? I Have Some

Someone on Yahoo Answers is asking, “who buys recycled glass bottles”?

The reason this person is asking this questions is because they have a recycling center and collect household goods from people. They want to sell the glass bottles they collect and are wondering where to go. But my theory is instead of selling these bottles to a recycling facility, why not become a supplier to crafts people who will use it to create super cool stuff.

This is a big unfilled niche in my opinion, as more people start to recycle and big companies start to recycle this creates a large repository of goods that small crafts people or retailers could use.

Let’s say you run an eco friendly jewelry company and you create recycled glass pendants. Or let’s say you are Minty Fresh Fusions, a super cute online crafter on Etsy who creates spoon rests from (get this!) recycled beer bottles. C’mon. That is too cute! Obviously you need an ongoing supply of recycled glass pieces, but where do you go to get this in bulk?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a service that you can sign-up for that compiles a list or directory of people or companies who have the materials you need.

A matchmaking service for recycled materials or an eBay like site that only specializes in recycled goods.

I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before some savvy entrepreneur latches onto this idea, and makes life easier for craftspeople all over the world. Such as the good people over at one of my favorite places online, Etsy.

Yesterday I wrote generally on how and where to recycle cans for money, today I’m going to point out specific details on a few cities.

What’s interesting to me is that just 9 months ago according to this Yahoo Answers listing, the going rate was .70 per pound. That is a major and steep drop in value for aluminum cans, and reiterates the current state of our economy.

What is more eco friendly than reusing? Not much. So when i stumbled upon this cool DIY tutorial on recycling a used laptop into a digital picture frame i was stoked.

Have an old Apple iBook, Acer Travelmate, Apple Powerbook, Compaq Presario, Dell Insipiron or Latitude, Fujitsu Lifebook, HP Omnibook or Pavilion, IBM Thinkpad, Sony VAIO, Toshiba Satellite or Terca? If so – then you can turn that laptop into a digital photo frame.

From what i gather the laptops are completely taken apart, and usually run on a simple OS (operating system) like Linux.

Check out below what the future geek did with his old Dell Latitude 300. Pretty cool.

We all know that as far as car replacement parts are concerned, it is cheaper to get one from surplus shops. But if this new bill take effect, we may see the end of that and a lot of angry consumers who want to save on car maintenance and repairs.

The critical nature of this kind of broad legislation is twofold. First, American automobile repair businesses and consumers purchase these quality recycled vehicle components every day to keep their vehicles running. These businesses and consumers rely on parts from recycled vehicles because of their substantial savings in reduced repair costs and lower insurance premiums, savings from the purchase of a replacement vehicle, and also for the strong environmental benefits.

In fact, these two parts alone typically account for some 50% to 60% of a professional automotive recycler’s sales — overall automotive recycling is a $22 billion industry in the United States. Thus, Congress should understand the demand for such repair options, and consider the implications of restricting them.

The recovery, reuse, and resale of these quality recycled parts must remain readily available to the consumer who may not want or be able to financially retire their vehicle and will require access to parts from these vehicles for their future repairs.

Sony Launches GreenFill Recycling Service

Sony Electronics has announced a recycling program to make sure that electronic gadgets are properly disposed of. GreenFill service simplifies electronics recycling by providing consumers the ability to recycle small electronics – such as cameras, portable music devices, small laptops, cell phones and portable gaming devices – at participating retail locations for free. Consumers can simply drop their old small electronics, regardless of brand, in the GreenFill e-Recycle Drop Box at participating retailers.

At launch, 81 retail stores have joined Sony in its goal to make it as easy to recycle small consumer electronics as it is to purchase them, and more are expected to join as the program continues. The program is an extension of Sony’s Take Back Recycling program and is designed to help build awareness of Sony’s nationwide network of more than 270 drop-off locations where larger Sony-branded electronics will be accepted at no charge and other brands will be accepted for a small fee.

Since Sony’s Take Back Recycling program began, more than 14 million pounds of electronic waste have been collected. The company expects that number to grow exponentially as the program continues.

SodaStream Brings PRECYCLING to Retailers

As the whole issue of bottled water is slowly getting some headway, SodaStream is honing efforts to focus this time around on soda bottles and cans. Just in time for Earth Day, Sodastream has brought its revolutionary line of home soda makers to retail locations nationwide, including all Kohl’s stores, bringing PRECYCLING to a national level.

PRECYCLING — eliminating waste at its source — is the new trend this Earth Day, and it’s even better for the environment than recycling. According to the Container Recycling Institute, about 70% of soda and water bottles do NOT get recycled. Most of the waste ends up in landfills or in the ocean.

Boston residents consumed 33 million gallons of soda in 2008, meaning over 205 million bottles and cans thrown away and not recycled. If soda and sparkling water drinkers in Boston were to make their carbonated beverages at home, that move alone could save 36,000 barrels of oil, the equivalent of taking 2,900 cars off local roads for one year. This Earth Day, Boston can embrace the Sodastream solution and actively reduce the environmental cost of carbonated beverages.

By making soda at home, you can eliminate the roughly 600 bottles and cans of carbonated beverages the average American consumes each year. The compact and portable home soda maker uses no batteries or electricity, making it a highly energy efficient small appliance. Has anyone ever thought about those peanut shaped Styrofoam blocks that fill up huge boxes only the protect something is just a quarter of the box size. Well many do, because this packaging material is not cheap to make, but only gets used once, what a waste!

However, it would seem that recycling these little Styrofoam peanuts is easier than it would first sound, because of its purpose, it is classed as an industrial packaging and therefore cannot be transported around by an average person in huge quantities and recycling plants will not take small quantities either. Even the actual recycling process is not easy, as it has to be cleaned and gathered in large quantities, surely, there must be an easier way of doing this.

Most people are not using them and to add insult to injury, every time a new one is sent out the old directory is thrown away. Perhaps it is time for people to seriously consider not accepting new phone books.

Most phone books are actually made from recycled paper and wood fibre waste; it is also true that many thousands of these books are also recycled every year. However, this is not enough as over six hundred and sixty thousand tons of phone books are thrown away each in the US.

Recycling bins placed in public places are a good idea, but are they effective enough? Some experts feel that this is not so and more could be done to make the use of recycling bins easier and therefore better for the community.

It has been found that instead of having a lid; recycling bins with holes are much more effective and prevent the placing of other waste being mixed in with metal, glass and paper. Just by making a round hole for cans and a slot for paper etc increases the amount of recycling by up to thirty four per cent that according to Sean Duffy, an associate professor of psychology at Rutgers University.

New Packaging for Eco-friendly Milk

In a change of marketing strategy, UK’s first eco-friendly milk will reportedly change its GreenBottle labeling made of unique concept using recycled office waste paper to create a durable outer container, with a removable inner bag full of milk, supplied by local dairy MaryBelle.

The label design was actually a brainchild by 13-year-olds Dania Brewer and Charlie Besant. These were plucked out by the inventors of GreenBottle and will hit the shelves at Asda in Lowestoft.

A new batch of GreenBottle will be available in Asda at Horn Hill from with Dania and Charlie’s label attached and it is hoped the milk will be rolled out across stores in East Anglia.

The good thing about this method of producing bio diesel is that it actually takes place after the coffee has been used. This means that all of those coffee shops around the world could be sitting on a potential gold mine as it is the oil that the grounds contain that can be used, you have to wonder though, does the exhaust smell like the inside of Starbucks?

A while ago, I wrote about why we should not buy jewellery produced under difficult circumstances such as conflict diamonds and gold that comes from dubious origins. I thought it was about time that we found some wedding jewellery that is eco friendly and safe to buy.

My Green Carat had the same concerns and so in order to provide eco friendly wedding jewellery; they use only recycled materials in their work and produce some really nice and unusual designs and styles. They will even produce a wedding ring or any other piece of jewellery from materials, which have been donated by the consumer; it is a nice way of having old jewellery made in something wonderful.

Flags are often used to represent countries but there are events such as the last Beijing Olympics which create their own flag versions for the meet. What Happens to Old Flags?

Bruce Willis Sues Eco Friendly Rubber Company

No this is not the idea for a new movie, top actor Bruce Willis actually invested $2 million in a Malaysian rubber who were developing a green rubber, however the project has failed to actually develop the eco friendly recyclable and non toxic rubber and so the man wants his cash back.

In fact, the company has been on the ropes for some time, but luckily, for Bruce there was a clause in the agreement, which stated that he would be able to get his cash if he wanted to within a specified period of time. This he did back in March, but only received $1.1 million back, now there have been court papers filed in Los Angeles to retrieve the other $900,000.
