Cadbury Announces Recycled Cardboard Packaging

For the Christmas season, chocolate maker Cadbury is going green by offering recycled cardboards which will replace the usual round metal tins for roses and chocolates. This new move is part of their “Purple goes Green” strategy which includes a pledge to cut packaging for seasonal products by 25% in 2010. So if you are looking for those tin cans, forget it. Recycled cardboards are now in their place!

Sprint Unveils Eco-friendly Packaging

Eco-friendly packaging is all over the news today and apparently Sprint is following the trend. Being a popular spot for mobile phones and gadgets, the need for eco-friendly packaging should be something that will place Sprint into the record books. Actually they have been named the 15th Most Green Telecom Company and are bound to be ranked higher in the future.

Beginning this month, Sprint will ship out these packages to all retail and online stores. The packages have become about 20 to 40 percent smaller, which will save 647 tons of waste each year; it will also help Sprint save 35% on packaging and shipping costs, to the tune of around $2.1 annually.

Big Head Papercraft Halloween Costume

Halloween may be over but you know that a lot of recycled outfits were out in the market during that stretch. Among them included this Big Head Papercraft portrait which used 370 individual paper triangles to make. To come up with something like this requires some talent and geekiness. And for the sake of finding out how the person behind it was able to come out with this costume:

The first step was to model his face in 3D Studio Max. After overlaying a wireframe, he added textures in Mudbox 2010 and Photoshop CS3, before using software called Pepakura to break the model up into printable sections.

So next season, try something like this. It is bound to be a hit for the Halloween Season having a life-sized bobble head made of paper triangles.

They should be great for people looking at innovative designs to deliver audio on a certain extent, maybe for portable media players.

Krooom, an Israeli design company with international representation, is producing eco friendly DIY cardboard furniture for the home, office, and kid’s room. Fun cardboard furniture isn’t just for kids anymore.

The effort is a mixed cause. They make sure that the materials they are using are 60% recycled and of course recyclable pointing towards their practice of precycling. Precycling is “the process of making a conscious choice to purchase or use products and services which will have a less harmful effect on the environment.”

We have seen a lot of modern cardboard-based designs and now we get the chance to see them up and close as the Sundance Channel features Cardboardesign interior designers Thom Filicia, Marjora Carter, Dixon Mitchell of Vanguard, Steve Bewley of Rerun Productions, and Vahid Pourkay and Cathy Henszey.

The carbon footprint of the furniture industry is enormous. Can we imagine a world furnished by sustainable designs? Ideas include eco-friendly furniture, cardboard furniture and repurposing junk. It will be shown on Tuesday, August 11 at 8:00pm e/p.

Halloween is 3 weeks away and for sure kids who will go out for the traditional trick or treat in the neighborhood are looking for something weird to wear. While many kids and parents are looking for the traditional witch or wizard costume, there are some who look to the conventional character costumes such as the old western cowboy.

With that in mind, why not top it all off with a recycled cowboy hat made out of used cartons? Now consumer products may be criticized like this one from Miller beer boxes but if you look at it, the colors and design make it look like it was really made for it. Besides, you aren’t really going to allow your kid to drink on Halloween are you?

For the mobile storage needs, checking out these new end gadgets made from recycled newspaper. Looking like a chip board, this is certainly a gadget that anyone would surely want to check out especially when it comes to going green and maintaining the technological rants that most people are looking for today.

Courtesy of Engadget we spotted this “eco-friendly” USB stick made out of recycled newspaper. As you can see from the photo, it looks like a tiny little piece of chip board.

It’s called the Recycle and it’s produced and distributed by a company called INF Import. It does all the usual things you’d expect USB sticks to do and comes in sizes ranging from 512MB up to 16GB.

Crisis’ Eco-Friendly Christmas Cards

Christmas is just around the corner and among the things that people are sure to be looking for are the usual Christmas cards especially if they are sending something to their loved ones from afar. But while we see a lot of these cards on display in stores, there are eco-friendly Christmas cards that you can consider as well, adapting the eco-friendly responsibilities as well as helping out the homeless people at the Crisis Skylight centre by buying their work.

According to Crisis, the card measures three metres by four metres and has been created by homeless artists at the Crisis Skylight centre.

On average, the group claims, each company will send 1,379 greetings cards and spend £1,080 on the greetings.

You can do a lot of design ideas using one sustainable material if you really become glued to it. Apparently that is how Giles Miller started it all and he is now being christened the King of Cardboards for his different concepts as far as fashion and design is concerned.

For his efforts, he has been a hot news item in the world of environmental practices and definitely, he shall continue to do so with his various cardboard-based ideas.

I became interested in sustainable design after reading a really ignorant article in a popular design magazine which said that eco-design was boring. It argued that saving the planet was the role of the politician, not the designer. That really shocked me. I got so worked up I decided to prove it wasn’t true.

Don’t be surprised if the next time you buy a laptop that it may come in an eco-friendly messenger bag and not the usual cardboard boxes we have been used to. Companies such as Hewlett Packard are now doing this practice of using eco-friendly packaging in selling their laptops, contributing towards green awareness as far as reducing their cardboard needs and offering better eco-friendly bags.

With this new way of packaging, do not be surprised if others follow HP’s lead as well.

HP claims that by using their method of packaging, they’ve reduced standard laptop packaging waste by 97%, eliminating most cardboard and styrofoam traditionally utilized. The bag itself is constructed of 100% recycled materials. This method of packaging also allows HP to ship four laptops per standard sized shipping box as opposed to three when using traditional laptop packaging. This might not sound like a lot, until you think of it this way: more efficient shipping means one out of four trucks hauling this product can be eliminated, saving emissions and fuel usage. The laptop comes with a voucher to recycle whatever laptop one’s new purchase is replacing, as well.

Recyclable Milk Bottle Container from the Green Bottle

Traditionally we would buy milk in the usual plastic bottles but ever since they were identified as horrible contributors towards the growing issue of plastic, some groups all over the world have developed new ways of packaging as far as consuming regular milk that most people look for today.

The Green Bottle is a solution that aims to eliminate these standard plastic bottles. Not only is it made from recycled paper, it can easily be thrown to decompose by itself if not recycled.

GreenBottle was first piloted in the Lowestoft branch of ASDA in May last year and sold at the same price as the milk in conventional containers.

It will now be a permanent fixture on the shelves and Mr King said there were plans to offer the product across ASDA’s East Anglia stores within a few months.

Recyclable Milk Bottle Container from the Green Bottle

Most people today have acknowledged the need to be eco-friendly and recycling waste materials such as plastic, paper, glass and metal is only one part of trying to complete a process of making them reusable. Not all parts of the world are pretty much aware that they can do more after these recyclables are sorted out. They can actually help improve the economy by processing new reusable materials such as paper and at the same time offer green jobs to people who need work these days.

This can be seen as a great process for motivation especially if you think about converting the whole process into a beneficial one. It takes one man to lead by example and hopefully assigned leaders can take their cue from this “Green Mayor”, Mr. Michael Bloomberg.

Aside from some health-safe dyes, the main two ingredients in the conversion of post-consumer waste paper – of which 400,000 tons are remade at the site each year – into fully usable recycled rolls are water and cornstarch.

The waste paper is broken down into fibers in water, the previous dyes are soaked out and then the material is refused together inside a 374-degree Fahrenheit oven.

After 33 minutes, the end product of that milling procedure is a 17-foot-wide roll of brown paper, which can be cut down in size if necessary, and weighs in at about 26 tons.

It was originally designed to be a bike to prevent people from stealing it, after all who on earth is going to want to steal a bike made out of cardboard? Clearly the designer, who is studying Product Design at Sheffield Hallam University, in the UK had not checked out the desires of green minded people.

A bike is stolen every seventy one seconds in the UK, but if they were all made from this design then it would easier to replace and less likely to be stolen, but with so many items with a sporting connection being made from cardboard, maybe it is about time that the cardboard Olympics were started!

Making items out of cardboard is on the one hand sensible because this material is really strong and on the other, the materials are made from mostly recycled paper and card which is great because paper products are made to be recycled!

This table which has been designed by Sruli Recht and sold through Liborius in Iceland, comes in its own case which cuts back on the packaging, and when fully erected the table surface measures 1500 mm x 1200 mm x 930 mm, which is a good size, with the piece of furniture are three good sized drawers for storage and the table top has been laminated for extra protection.

But for some people, recycling these used corks can be used in different ways. For groups like ReCork America, they can find other ways to re-use these corks which range from floor tiles, building insulation, automotive gaskets, craft materials, soil conditioner and sports equipment. All it really takes is some creativity and imagination and you can recycle various items, corks in this case, to suit some new lifestyle needs.

Known as ReCORK America, the program is focused on obtaining used and surplus corks from winery tasting rooms, bottling lines and quality assurance laboratories. In addition, collection locations are being established with key retailers and restaurants in larger metropolitan areas. A list of current collection locations is available on this Web site. Could this be the furniture of the future? Well it is what students at the University of Idaho think; they have been producing these pieces of green furniture for a project that has been named Re-Furnished.

Cardboard in itself may not be totally eco friendly, but when it has been recycled then it takes on a different image, and could be classed as totally green.

The way that they have made these pieces, means that the material is strong enough to be sat on, granted it may not be all that comfortable in some cases, but these chairs are definitely functional. When they have been finished with, and then is there the possibility of the material being recycled again?

This has been a very long time coming, it the green basket ball, well actually its black and is eco friendly because it uses forty per cent recycled rubber. Now that may not seem to be much, but surely anything that is recycled is better than nothing.

However it has been estimated that when seventy of these balls are purchased, then that will be the equivalent of a car tyre, now that really does makes sense because tyres and land fill sites just do not make good partners.

To make the whole package green, the makers Wilson have also made sure that the packaging that the ball comes in use eighty per cent recycled cardboard.

Now this stuff is great although there are certain problems with cardboard furniture, these are strength, fire and water resistance, these three factors would be able to destroy the furniture and good part of the home too. This is a bit of a worry if you are setting up home in a new place etc.

However on the other hand these items are going to be totally recyclable when they are finished with which it’s a great point. This is great note pad for you to be able to jot down all of those little notes, but should you be worrying about how these pads are made and if they are recyclable or not then worry no more. Because these pads are actually made from recycled paper and the cover is made from old recycled plastic bags.

The pads are A4 in size and so will cater for most tasks that are asked of it. The only thing about these is that they will have to be split up when finished with otherwise there could be a problem with recycling.

This brilliant little idea which not only will save all the mess from those people who choose to smoke, this eco ashtray is made from recycled and biodegradable materials and will take up to five cigarettes at a time, which is great for chain smokers.

There must be mountains of newspapers that are around in various places doing nothing and just junking up the place, so what can be done with them?

Well for one thing these beads for one, at first it sounds like something that would be made a school because it would sound a bit like paper mache, but when you see the finished results they are something a bit better than a school project.

How about replacing those old paper disposable cup which just little up everywhere causing a sticky mess along the paths etc.

Well forget about those cups now, because there is this “I am not a paper cup” its made from porcelain and comes with its own silicon lid, imagine the coffee flavour that will not bend up in your hand, sounds good for $20!

Now there are many businesses that have a lot of these cardboard tubes left over from products that they have used, like carpet and other flooring companies, so what exactly can they do with those leftover cardboard tubes?

Well to some people the answer is obvious, design and build a fantastic lamp shade, this one for instance covers those fluorescent lights from view below, which is a great idea, the direct light is cut down and the shape and size of the lamp shade, will look really cool too.

A London bookstore has gone green because they have installed some specially designed shelves that have been crafted from cardboard. Its hard to even imagine that shelving made from a product like card board could even stand up to the test of being used in a book shop of all places, yet this is exactly what Magma are doing in their London store.

The product comes flat packed as you would expect, but there are other units too, like counters etc, in fact it is quite possible to fit out the entire store with the cardboard shelving units.
