We keep on reading about how we should switch to fluorescent bulbs in lieu of the traditional incandescent bulbs to save energy but apparently that is not the end of it. The matter of keeping our distance from exposure to them is also another need since they may cause redding of the skin.

As much as possible we should watch how far they are from us, especially if we are using reading lamps that make use of these fluorescent bulbs. The UV rays emitted by them can be dangerous and can cause skin problems if we do not watch it.

Exposure at one inch gave a UV level equivalent to being outside in the UK on a sunny summer’s day.

But at distances of more than 12 inches, the UV level was found to be safe.

More than 20million ‘eco bulbs’ are sold every year, about 13 per cent of the total, and they last around 10,000 hours – up to 12 times longer than traditional bulbs

Everyone needs light but the problem is what bulbs to use. We have seen the transition from the usual incandescent bulbs towards the energy-efficient LED bulbs but the problem really lies on how well they can be maintained especially when they use up their product life. Worst, most of these so-called new bulbs contain mercury, something that is hazardous to the health of many especially pregnant women.

But Marexim aims to change all this as it boasts of a solid form of mercury, and is now moving into newer-generations of LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs that use no mercury or lead at all.

“If someone takes a bulb out of a packet and drops it on the floor, they won’t be exposed to any mercury vapour,” he said.

“There’s also no lead in the glass, or in the solder components, and the [light] tubes are encapsulated inside safety glass.”

Mercury is toxic and a US study has found exposure to the amounts in CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs) can be dangerous to humans, particularly pregnant women.

Mercury can cause birth defects and contaminate surfaces it comes into contact with, leading to household and environmental pollution.

Marexim Bulbs Free From Mercury

While most of us today are encouraged to shift using the Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFL), there is a new problem over the horizon and it deals with proper disposal of these CFL bulbs once they are worn out. We all know for a fact that mercury discharge is something we have to avoid and hence the proper disposal is called for to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand.

MRT Sustem International AB Lumavagen, a Swedish firm has been selected to collect and recycle burnt out CFL bulbs with the hopes of putting the waste management for these bulbs in control. The leading groups who make use of these CFL bulbs are the hospitals which are in danger of being exposed of the liquid metal discharges if they are not disposed properly.

“As the power-saving CFL bulbs have become mandatory in every institution including hospitals, we are also facing the problem of recycling the spent mercury-containing bulbs which discharge the harmful liquid metal. Hence we roped in the Swedish firm, which has the most comprehensive recycling systems based on world-class MRT technology for mercury contaminated waste products,” he said.

The foreign firm has already tied up with local groups to collect the waste items and planned to set up a recycling plant with the new technology in Chandigarh. “There would be no fiscal burden on us as the Swedish firm will earn through charging fees,” he added.

The energy-friendly LED, Halogen, and CFL, are what they are to be replaced with. These are pricier (by a few dollars) but they also last much much longer and they will also save you moola in annual energy bills.

The incandescent lightbulbs are to be phased out over the next 10 to 12 years and no longer to be used. A tall task since Americans have been using the incandescents for over 125 years. But very doable.

I have found some inexpensive CFL’s at my local Walmart, they go for about $10 for a pack of 2 or 3. Their wattage is set up a bit differently too, a 13 watt CFL equals the same ouput as a traditional 60 watt incandescent. So look for the 13 watt packages.
