Take a look at these amazing sneakers made from recycled metals. They’re not fashion so much as art.

An American artist by the name of Gabriel Dishaw designs the sneaks out of discarded wires, bolts and other small metal bits and pieces. The result is nothing short of brilliant. Each sneaker shoe is molded and designed to bring awareness to the recycling and upcycling movement, as artist David feels that many things can be reused when a tad of creativity and talent are put together.

Well, not quite David. I could muster up all the creativity and talent in my possession and still not come up with as gorgeous a creation as your recycled metal sneakers.

Excellent Example Of A Local Shoe Recycling Event

Are you wanting to create a local shoe recycling event in your town and need inspiration? Look to the Moms and Tots initiative in Morristown, New Jersey.

Amanda Powers a member of the group and a mom decided to create a local shoe recycling event in her hometown to entice other moms to bring out and donate old gymshoes. Where do the gymshoes go? They go to the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe program and there they get turned into awesome playgrounds and basketball courts. Through the event everyone (not just moms) are encouraged to bring in a pair (or two) of shoes that either no longer fit or simply have seen better days.

Once Nike receives the donations, their process is pretty cool. They ship to one of their two processing locations, one in Oregon and one in Belgium, where the shoes are sorted and processed into three types of raw material: rubber from the outsole, foam from the midsole and fabric fibers from the upper. That stuff then goes on to be integrated into courts, fields, and playgrounds.

The Moms and Tots group set up the recycling drive as an event and has proven to be a great idea in Morristown. So it might work well in your neck of the woods as well.

First The Samsung Reclaim, Now The Samsung Blue Earth

In a continuing line of eco friendly phones from Samsung, we now have the new Samsung Blue Earth.

This tablet style touchscreen phone is the latest GREEN model from Samsung, and it features a screen made from recycled water bottles, a neat solar panel on the back which Samsung claims can get about 15 minutes of talk time after an hour in the sun, and cool extra features as well besides the eco stuff, such as GPS capability and an impressive 3mp camera.

The Samsung Blue Earth is not available in the US, but might very well be if other similar GREEN Samsung devices sell well. Currently the Samsumg Reclaim is their only US marketed eco friendly phone, which we wrote about a few weeks ago.

Gorgeous Green Home In South Carolina May Get Gold Status LEED Certification

A couple has turned their ordinary Cobblestone Park, South Carolina home into an extraordinary green space, coupled with possible gold status LEED certification.

No stone was left unturned in the remodel and redesign of the Switzer home. The biggest challenge Mike and Maggie say they had in the idea for their eco friendly home was finding the right architect and builder.

But they ended up hiring an architect they had worked with before and off it went. Everything from the usual solar panels on the roof to bamboo floors was added to the home, but also much more.

See below some of other cool sustainable features they implemented throughout the home:

solar water heating system
carpet made from recycled plastic bottles
irrigation run off water system to collect rain water
drought-resistant plants instead of grass
natural light is strategically used throughout the home
insulation in crawl space keeps bamboo floors cool
energy-efficient appliances in kitchen
reclaimed wood used for outdoor club house
pavers on roof made from recycled tires
recycled rubber mulch
low-flow showerheads in bathroom
outdoor solar lights
reclaimed brick was used for the patio
countertops in kitchen made from recycled glass
and more

They say the home at $590,000 and 4,000 square feet did not end up costing much more than a non-green home in the same area. Plus they’ll save annually on electricity and other utility bills. Well done!

Penny Nash is the brains and heart behind a new eco friendly apparel website named LightenYourCarbonFootprint.com

In Penny’s own words:

“I’ve been reading about the impact humanity is having on the earth for a long time, and I’m disappointed that more hasn’t been done to stop pollution, climate change and species extinction,” said Nash. “Finally I decided to get involved, and that’s when I launched my website,” she added.

Her website focuses mostly on sustainable apparel such as hemp and bamboo for adults, and has plans to introduce the same for infants and teens down the line.

I’ve seen the website and apparel pricing is moderate, however the site itself is truly lacking. It needs a serious design makeover and maybe easier navigation. So a new webmaster or designer is definitely in order.

Purple Wastewater Hydrants Coming To South Jersey

Get ready! The purple fire hydrants are coming. In the city of Cape May in South Jersey plans are underway to recycle wastewater and to distinguish this water source from public hydrants, purple hydrants will be used.

It’s no joke. They are outlets for the county MUA water reuse project, part of a $2.5-million project, funded in part by the state Department of Environmental Protection to recycle highly-purified wastewater that will be diverted from ocean dispersion, and used for irrigation purposes, at the County Park Zoo to wash animal cages, and at Middle Township Davies Recreation Complex athletic fields.

Recycle Glass Week Runs September 21-27

Glass Recycling Week is coming up in a few weeks and many glass manufacturing companies (with the help from the Glass Packaging Institute) will be holding several awareness events.

GPI spokesperson Kristen LeKander said by creating more awareness about the environmental benefits of glass container recycling, GPI members hope to help the glass container industry reach a nationwide goal of 50 percent recycled content in the manufacture of new glass bottles and jars by 2013. Doubling the U.S. glass container recycling rate (28 percent in 2007) would allow manufacturers to use 50 percent recycled glass to make new glass containers, saving enough energy to power 21,978 homes for one year and removing 181,550 tons of waste from landfills every month.

In simple terms, it’s a trade. “I give you my 8gb iPod I received for Christmas, you give me your Kodak digi-cam your sister gave you for your birthday”. Usually trades are done with items of equal or similar value and can be done with either a product or a service.

For example, a carpenter/electrician can trade his skills for the professional services of a dentist. This barter can be done in a formal fashion with lots of documents and signatures, or it can be an informal hand shake type deal.

So if you’re anything like me you’re seriously wanting to get away from the computer for abit and do something active.

Or maybe not. But if you are and your activity of choice is biking and maybe joining a bike club, let me show you where and how to find a community of like-minded active bikers.

I’ve been thinking of joining, creating or somehow participating in a local bike club, so I decided to do my research. I found this great article on iBike.org which explains how to create a bike club and it goes into nice detail on exactly why, how, when and where to launch a local bike club. If there was enough interest in my town, I would totally start one. But alas not sure if this is feasible, as it’s a pretty small town and from the looks of it might not go over too well. But never say never.

However if a club already exists in your area, then there’s no need to go that route. To see if there’s a bike club in your town, go to this awesome bicycle club directory and look for your state. The clubs are arranged from A-Z by US state, further on the list (international bike clubs) are listed as well.

Biking is something that can be done well into the fall season and even in a mild winter season. But as with just about everything else, it’s best done with a friend.

So find a local bike club and join the fun!!!

If you’re looking for an eco friendly lab coat for your scientist husband or college-bound student? We have found a line by Studio Scrubs you might be interested in.

Emily Konkler of the Feel Good Style blog came upon the line from Studio Scrubs after she was asked by her boyfriend if she could research eco scrubs for his scientist dad. She did and found the goods.

The eco friendly scrubs are made using organic cotton and recycled polyester, and although they don’t come in wild colors or patterns, they are more modern in design than older more traditional scrubs and lab coats. The garments are shipped out in recycled boxes and are designed and manufactured in a sweatshop-free studio in Vancouver. It’s a good thing Emily was asked by her boyfriend to find some earth-friendly scrubs, as it was a win-win for everyone. Let’s just hope dad likes ‘em.

Central Ohio Residents: Recycle Your Old Phone Books At SWACO

With almost 2 million phone books to be delivered to Central Ohio residents in the coming weeks, the local waste management office is hoping old phone books will be recycled.

Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio otherwise known locally as SWACO is ready to accept the old phone books from residents.

Old phone books can be disposed of with regular recycling loads, without being separated from plastics and cans.

SWACO also advises that residents can include old phone books in their weekly curbside recycling. Even if only a small percentage of residents recycle their old phone books, it will make a huge difference.

You could collect your old phone books and send them to the artist that makes super cool pen holders made from discarded phone books, via Recycled Crafts.

Central Ohio Residents: Recycle Your Old Phone Books At SWACO

Help A Child, Recycle Your Unwanted Phone

In Jamaica, a local cell phone provider is setting up a large scale recycling campaign to help children affected by HIV/Aids. The campaign entitled, Help A Child, Recycle Your Unwanted Cell Phone is a joint effort between Digicel Jamaica and Jamaica AIDS Support For Life to collect, manage, and sell old unwanted cell phones from consumers.

The phones would be auctioned off in bulk to businesses in the Far East and Africa which deal in reconditioned handsets. There, depending on the condition, a handset will sell for anywhere between US$1 and $5.

The money raised will go toward helping fund additional research, treatment and prevention of one of the most ghastly diseases ever to hit the human race.

We hope Digicel Jamaica raises alot of money through this most noble recycling effort.

The buzz this week in the electric vehicle market is the recent news that the Chevy Volt by GM will debut next year and with a very impressive 230 miles per gallon.

But is this true? Will the Chevy Volt really reach the claimed mileage of a whopping 230 miles per gallon?

Skeptics abound left and right and with good reason, as this has never officially been done. The mass market car which should debut in late 2010, around November and is expected to retail at $40,000, is a hybrid. Meaning it is powered by both a gas engine and an electric motor.

How it will reach the 230 mpg’s is not exactly clear, but one thing is for certain – the car will make a splashy debut and rasie alot of eyebrows when it finally reaches American roads next fall.

New Iowa Public Access TV Show Features Eco DIY Projects

In Iowa residents are going to be treated to a new DIY show, starring one of their own – Michele Beschen.

The name of the local public access show is to be titled b.organic and what’s neat about this particular DIY tv show is that the host Michele specializes in creating projects that are organic or eco friendly.

The first show will deal with creating unique organic tabletop decorations, with upcoming shows discussing recyclables. Sounds like fun to me!

The show will air daily at noon on Iowa public access stations across the state and will run about 30 minutes.

Take the recycled pc parts digital watch featured on TechChee, it is made using a recycled pc cable and a USB connector. The USB connector also serves as the power source for the watch’s internal battery, plug that baby into any USB outlet and it will power up the tiny battery.

Also, for some reason digital watches are making a comeback, they were a big hit back in the 80’s when they first started to come out.

Recycled Spray Paint Can Lamps

Did you ever look at a spray can of paint and think to yourself, “hey I can make lamps out of these”. Well if you did, you’re in good company as so did the guys behind the Spray Can Lamp pictured above.

With the can pressure carefully emptied, these cans have their bottom panels removed to make way for a glass cover. The bulb holder is fitted somewhere in the top region of the can with the wire coming out from the nozzle. Each can is then painted with some weird, but, eye catching graffiti light from outside that gives them an authentic feel.

Although it looks easy enough, I don’t think people are rushing out to try this, as I really don’t know who still uses spray paint. But if you do, give it a try and feel free to let us know and be sure to send in pics.

Have some old (but in good shape) t-shirts lying around? Need shopping bags? In this super easy DIY, the guys and gals from Cut Out + Keep show us how to create shopping bags from old t-shirts.

It’s imple really. As the pictures show us, you will need:

old -tshirts
sewing machine (or a needle and thread)
scissors

First cut out the sleeves and then hem up the bottom of the shirt, be sure to sew two lines so it’s nice and sturdy for grocery use. Then cut out the excess material.

That’s it! You’ve got yourself one groovy DIY shopping bag.

The solar powered sleeves currently only work with the iPhone and the Blackberry, which just happen to be two of the most popular phones currently on the market.

The sleeves slip into the phone as a case would, and in fact that’s also what they are – a protective case. Yes, they serve a dual purpose.

PowCell hasn’t officially released the product yet, but is taking pre-orders on their website. The sleeve for the iPhone is the only one currently available for pre-order, with the Blackberry sleeve soon to follow.

Environmentally-minded consumers are looking for ways to reduce water usage and as such look to household appliances for help. One such appliance is the home water faucet, which gets regular daily use in just about every US home.

Moen which is probably one of the most well-known faucet manufacturers has come out with a new line of low flow faucets which enable reduced water usage. But that’s not the cool part. The cool thing about the new line of eco friendly faucets from Moen is that they have a dual setting, one for regular everyday tasks such as dish washing and also a faster heavier flow for filling up big pots and pans.

The line is stylish and features two products, one is named Anabelle and the other is named Dorsey. Both are available via the Moen site or a suitable retailer and each dual-setting low-flow Moen faucet dolls out water at 1.75 gallons at the first setting, and then can switch to 2.2 gallons of water per minute for a faster task.

Very innovative and a win win for the avid cook.

New Yorkers have a new service in town and it’s aimed squarely at residents who want to take advantage of the city’s clean tap water.

Well whether the tap water in NYC is clean is up for debate, but let’s leave that aside for now, as that’s not quite the point. TapIt is a new service that has launched in New York City that offers up free tap water refills at over 100 locations in participating city cafes.

Sure you could fill up at home, but TapIt is about providing a convenience. When you’re on the go and you have your handy dandy refillable reusable water bottle and need a refill, instead of trekking back home or buying something new, you can locate a TapIt cafe and refill for free.

How do you find a TapIt location? Easy! You can use your iPhone to locate a participating cafe or use your web-enabled cell to check the TapIt website.

This should also provide a boon to local businesses as no doubt additional customers will visit. Even if initially someone walks in for water, one never knows what other goodies they will snatch up.

UPDATE: The service may have already rolled out to Florida as I see the city listed in the drop down search box. Will keep you posted.

Wow! We just reported last night how the governments “Cash for Clunkers” program was put on hold, as the one billion alloted for it, had already been reached in just under a week.

And now there are news reports that an additional $2 billion has been added to the extremely popular program. Congress obviously see’s this as a major economy booster and doesn’t want to let it die just yet.

With the new additional funding, consumers can again replace an old clunker with a new more fuel-efficient approved vehicle, and get upwards of $4,500 in the form of a tax rebate.

How long will this economy booster last and what other silent repercussions are in the midst? One has to wonder.

A new supermarket in Massachusetts aims to be the greenest supermarket in the US.

Hannaford Supermarket has vegetation growing on top of its building that is also equipped with solar panels for energy. In fact, the pavement around the store is grain-based and this helps reflect the sunlight so that it doesn’t heat up and contribute to global warming.

The supermarket also hopes to educate with instructional displays placed on entryways, that are interactive for children and adults. All to help instruct consumers on sustainable green principles and the problems facing the globe today.

It also offers sustainable carry bags to its customers in the place of plastic carry bags. This is a fairly new initiative set to launch here in the United States, where no current legislation exists limiting the production of carry bags.

Made in Germany in small family run shops that receive fair wages and treatment, the recycled firehose bags company idea is the brainchild of two German brothers, one a textile engineer and another a marketing dynamo.

All the bags are made from firehoses which were on active duty in a fire department and are no longer fitting enough for duty, but great as a fashion piece.

Well with a new hybrid kit created by an IBM engineer, you might be able to. The creator of the kit claims any car can be converted to a hybrid, and thus saving the US 120 millions gallons of fuel per day.

The Plug-in retrofit hybrid kit works by adding in an electric motor inside each wheel.

“The motors would be powered by extra batteries installed in the automobile’s trunk. The kit will cost between $3,000 to $5,000.”

Yokohama Tire Launched And It’s Made From Orange Peel Oil

The Yokohama tire pictured above is made using orange peel oil and according to engineers is 80% petroleum free.

The tire was conceived after race car drivers were looking for a tire that was stickier, after research it came about that orange peel oil is one of “the most stickiest natural products around”.

An interesting aside is that the available tire sizes on the Yokohama E-Spec tire, match all the top eco friendly cars currently on the market, including the Toyota Prius, the Honda Insight and a few others.

Drivers Pick Green Cars Over Fantasy Rides

A new report based on a survey of over 13,000 city dwellers says that green vehicles are fast becoming the must have mode of transportation. The survey covered no less than eighteen different countries as far apart as China and the US, looking for attitudes moving towards green transport.

Amazingly over a third of the respondents were very much in favor of green autos, public transportation, cycling and even walking to get around and save the planet. Many also said that they felt that owning a gas-guzzler was not very cool and showed a lack of care for the planet.
In a further twist the pollsters asked, “If given the choice would people select a dream car like a Ferrari or a green auto like a Toyota Prius?”. Over 40% voted for green transportation over a fantasy car.
Many respondents went on to say that in fact a green vehicle was their fantasy car at the moment, but that they’re relatively expensive.

How does it work? Simple really. Enter in your zip code and see what is currently available in your immediate area, if it’s something that you like/want/need then you contact the listee – and arrange for pick up.

You never know what nuggets of gold you might find, while scouring an app like this – so if you’re in the market for say a “used office desk”, give it a good go. A neighbor might have just bought a new bigger desk, and has one just sitting there needing a good home. Yours!

Vegetable Gardening In July? Yes!

Did you miss out planting some some veggies back in March? Wait! Don’t fret – it may not be too late to start your backyard garden after all.

Depending on where you live and the climate there, you still might be able to plant some hearty vegetables, fruits and even herbs.

According to Planet Green,

Tips on Starting a Late Garden

First, choose a place to plant; look for one that doesn’t get too much direct sun, since that can dry the soil out on the hottest days of August.Then till and compost the area where you want to plant. (You can also brew compost tea for a more direct root-reaching fertilizer).
Choose plants that have short growing seasons and that are hardy enough to withstand the first frost—carrots, broccoli, salad greens, peas, and beets are all good choices, according to Gardeners.com.
To figure out exactly when to plant, check the seed packet to find out how many days the veggies need for full-growth; add two weeks to counteract the shortened days and an extra two weeks for good measure; and subtract that from the date of the first frost in your region.

A good resource to consult for information on climate conditions in your specific area is a seed company named Victory Seeds, but you can also go to the government site at NCDC.org

So if you want some corn, carrots, broccoli or other hearty vegggie, check the two sources above and see which you can still plant, now in July.

Selena Gomez Recycles (Kind Of)

Teen sensation and all round Disney good girl Selena Gomez will admit to possibly not being the most “green aware” young role model in the world, but she says that she is at least working on it.
She can not switch the lights off when she leaves a room and also leaves on the TV, computer and anything else that should be switched off when she is not using them. The teen starlet does say that she is slowly becoming more aware and is trying to change her sloppy teen ways.

In a recent interview on the Mother Nature Network the teenybopper said that she is trying to mend her ways by using post it notes plastered all over her house that constantly remind her to switch stuff off.
And apparently at work, her Disney buddies now use both sides of the paper for their scripts which are recycled, along with everything else that can be re-used on the set. This is nice to hear since Selena is becoming increasingly popular, and other teens will be inspired to do the same and be greener.

Who Buys Recycled Glass Bottles? I Have Some

Someone on Yahoo Answers is asking, “who buys recycled glass bottles”?

The reason this person is asking this questions is because they have a recycling center and collect household goods from people. They want to sell the glass bottles they collect and are wondering where to go. But my theory is instead of selling these bottles to a recycling facility, why not become a supplier to crafts people who will use it to create super cool stuff.

This is a big unfilled niche in my opinion, as more people start to recycle and big companies start to recycle this creates a large repository of goods that small crafts people or retailers could use.

Let’s say you run an eco friendly jewelry company and you create recycled glass pendants. Or let’s say you are Minty Fresh Fusions, a super cute online crafter on Etsy who creates spoon rests from (get this!) recycled beer bottles. C’mon. That is too cute! Obviously you need an ongoing supply of recycled glass pieces, but where do you go to get this in bulk?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a service that you can sign-up for that compiles a list or directory of people or companies who have the materials you need.

A matchmaking service for recycled materials or an eBay like site that only specializes in recycled goods.

I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before some savvy entrepreneur latches onto this idea, and makes life easier for craftspeople all over the world. Such as the good people over at one of my favorite places online, Etsy.
