Fog to Fuel Plant Deployed

Here is a new way of turning waste into fuel resources. The new concept comes from BioFuelBox called the FOG-to-Fuel plant. They are transforming waste FOG from trap grease that produces a premium, low sulfur, ASTM compliant biodiesel for on-road use.

As most countries continue to discard billions of grease for the maintenance of sewer systems each year. The NovoStream process was designed to help reduce these problems and eliminate a significant source of GHG. Moreover, BioFuelBox’s biodiesel is clean-burning with an 85% reduction in GHG emissions compared to petroleum-based diesel.

Two Companies Convert Trash to Power

We have heard of recycling and apparently one of them includes this one which calls for the conversion of landfills and then soliciting methane gas landfills. If not trapped, the rising methane becomes a greenhouse gas at least 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide and accounts for 25 percent of all methane associated with human behavior.

In the conversion process, pipes running throughout the landfill vacuum up the gases and feed them into huge combustion engines that turn a generator. The resulting electricity is then transmitted to homes and offices via the electrical grid.

This may not only be great news for finding other means of generating power but can perhaps create more jobs while protecting the environment in the process. You can view the video report here.

There are many things that can be turned into lamps, but milk bottles are not always going to be top of the list as the idea material, for some reason they are always over looked as a source of material for any recycling unless they are going to be melted down and turned into something else.

However designers tend have more vision than the rest of us and Droog Design are of no exception in this case. Yet sometimes there is a fine line between recycled products and art, this lamp is priced at $1691, not bad for a dozen milk bottles that have been sand blasted.

A while ago, I wrote about why we should not buy jewellery produced under difficult circumstances such as conflict diamonds and gold that comes from dubious origins. I thought it was about time that we found some wedding jewellery that is eco friendly and safe to buy.

My Green Carat had the same concerns and so in order to provide eco friendly wedding jewellery; they use only recycled materials in their work and produce some really nice and unusual designs and styles. They will even produce a wedding ring or any other piece of jewellery from materials, which have been donated by the consumer; it is a nice way of having old jewellery made in something wonderful.

Instead of relying on gasses similar to Freon, a process which can only be performed with energy-intensive compressors and heating coils, the new kegerators will rely on something called magnetic field refrigeration. In magnetic field refrigeration, electricity is introduced to a polarpolymer, causing the usually disordered molecules of the polarpolymer to become highly ordered. As this happens, heat is dispersed and the material grows cold. When the electricity is switched off this process reverses itself. In the food business, gas and waste are two of the high needs that owners would have to worry about. Hiring someone to carry out the garbage and getting rid of spoiled oil are two things that they have to cater to and this cycle and innovation that has been developed by The Red Blazer is truly something that most current restaurant and dining owners would want to check out and consider.

Karathanasis learned of the device at a Chicago trade show, and found it solved an immediate problem — his staff had to lug out heavy bags full of empty glass bottles to the garbage bin in back. That practice had led to a couple of injuries, he said, and the glass crusher — which pulverizes empties and dumps the remains into a bucket — solved that problem.

Not having to throw the empties away meant a lot less garbage in the outside bin. That translated to lower costs for hauling it away. As in $8,400 a year lower.

Overjoyed with this success, Karathanasis began looking at other ways to conserve. He switched out the restaurant’s light bulbs. He installed a new dishwashing system that saves on water and electricity, helping reduce his power bill substantially. When he was once paying $8,000 a month for electricity, this past month he paid just $5,500 — in the height of summer, with its consequent need for air-conditioning inside the restaurant.

Most people today have acknowledged the need to be eco-friendly and recycling waste materials such as plastic, paper, glass and metal is only one part of trying to complete a process of making them reusable. Not all parts of the world are pretty much aware that they can do more after these recyclables are sorted out. They can actually help improve the economy by processing new reusable materials such as paper and at the same time offer green jobs to people who need work these days.

This can be seen as a great process for motivation especially if you think about converting the whole process into a beneficial one. It takes one man to lead by example and hopefully assigned leaders can take their cue from this “Green Mayor”, Mr. Michael Bloomberg.

Aside from some health-safe dyes, the main two ingredients in the conversion of post-consumer waste paper – of which 400,000 tons are remade at the site each year – into fully usable recycled rolls are water and cornstarch.

The waste paper is broken down into fibers in water, the previous dyes are soaked out and then the material is refused together inside a 374-degree Fahrenheit oven.

After 33 minutes, the end product of that milling procedure is a 17-foot-wide roll of brown paper, which can be cut down in size if necessary, and weighs in at about 26 tons.

Road Asphalt becomes Green As Well

Who would ever thought that bumpy roads with usual pot holes and uneven asphalt would join the going green bandwagon. Apparently, the main content which is asphalt can likewise be turned green if people look hard enough.

Asphalt can be good if it is made the right way. Normally, we see quick drying ones which unfortunately are made of the usual fuel and lubricants before they are laid down to smoothen our roads. But with the efforts of various countries such as Bahia and South Africa, we may be able to pick up a thing or two on how to use asphalt to the max.

Asphalt is a byproduct of the process of refining crude oil for fuel and lubricants. To prepare the gooey substance for application on roadways, Americans and Europeans may heat asphalt up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, creating hefty emissions of greenhouse gases.

Less-wealthy nations including South Africa and India have many years of headway in using so-called cold or warm mixes of asphalt, which require less heat and energy.

South Africans shave asphalt into smaller bits and mix it in water and soap-like surfactants, which don’t harden until after being laid on the road.

Bahia is interested in exploring modified, cold mix asphalts that might use plastics to achieve a longer-lasting, quieter, and safer end result.

And cold mixes also can use more recycled materials. Asphalt is the most frequently recycled material in the nation, according to the industry. Still, recycled asphalt contains only about about 15 percent reused materials, which Bahia wants to help expand.

“My best hope is to get the paving industry to recognize that they can save tremendous amounts of energy and impact on the environment by using different ideas in building our roads,” Bahia said.

Porous asphalt, used on Italian toll roads, is also considered more eco-friendly because it allows rainwater to seep into the ground and reduces noise. And it helps to reduce skidding and accidents. Bahia said cold mix, porous asphalt might be a possibility to explore.

Walgreens has these white/green shopping bags with a recycle logo on them, they retail for $1.00 World Market sells a swanky canvas shopping bag for $9.95 and Target has a reusable bag for about $1.49

I believe most of these reusable bags can only be had in store, not online. But i’m sure it varies.

“The increase in recycling and the number of localities meeting the recycling rates reflects the continued support by Virginians for recycling in their communities,” DEQ Director David K. Paylor said.

Nike has a line of eco friendly footwear and apparel that are made with recycled materials and are locally sourced. The name of the line is Nike Considered.

This is an attempt by Nike to green-up and become more sustainable, one beef i have with this green line, is you have to climb mountains to find it on their website. Nowhere is it prominently displayed or brought attention to. I only found the line through their search feature. I would think the eco line would be front and center.

But in any case, i found this great canvas messenger bag, that is really cute and is made to be sturdy enough for books and has a nice rugged feel to it. The eco friendly messenger bag is created out of canvas and rubber-coated linen, comes in an olive/tan/canvas color and retails for less than $105.

Dan Butler, a gym teacher and football coach in Florida, is driving around in a diesel truck that he converted to run on vegetable oil. Dan says, he is just an average joe who is doing his small part for the planet.

The Ford 350 truck is only refilled every few weeks and he gets his recycled vegetable oil for free from local pizza joints and other neighborhood restaurants. He has even motivated some reluctant friends who now want to also try out the idea.

BioJet Makes History as First 100% Biodiesel Flight

In Reno, NV the first flight powered by 100% biodiesel took place two weeks ago with the Bio Jet.

The Bio Jet is the creation of Green Flight International and although it has flown in the past with a mixture of jet fuel and biodiesel, last week was the first time, that it flew with only biodiesel. The plane is a L-29 military aircraft and this is what the founders of Green Flight International had to say in response to their concept:

“Out of concern for our global environment, Green Flight International was conceived by Douglas Rodante in April 2006 to serve as a platform for future development in the use of environmentally-friendly fuels in aviation and elsewhere. “It is imperative that the global community take immediate steps to reduce our carbon footprint, because we can no longer afford to wait while our environment continues to degrade.” said Rodante. “By implementing even a small amount of bio-degradable fuel in our transportation system we can significantly reduce the CO2 (greenhouse gasses) and NOx (the precursor to smog) that contribute to global warming.”

Most people are more concerned about how to properly get rid of their waste and turn them into something useful. For Yorkshire however, feasting on the growing wood waste and turning them into something useful will be something different and a need to which people have overlooked.

Speaking to letsrecycle.com on Friday, Mr Howarth said: “We are taking all grades of non-hazardous wood which we will recycle into a number of products including Biomass wood chip, horse bedding, cattle bedding and particle board.

“The area was selected due to the lack of wood recycling facilities in the Yorkshire and Humber region and that much of the wood waste travels away from Yorkshire towards the particle manufacturers in the North West and North Wales,” he explained.
