The Solar “Shelf” For Cars

This concept seems to be one of those usual car shades placed at the spoiler part of the car. But they are really solar powered “shelves” as Leon Zhu of China would call it, serving as a shade for the car when not in use. When fully charged, this device helps power in-car electronic systems such as the air-conditioning system and other electronic-related devices. It is foldable and hopefully fastened because if not, it may eventually expand and pose as a hazard for other nearby cars or worse, get lost just like a piece of paper without something to bind them together.

Solar car racing is something familiar and another one just went underway in Australia which began in the northern city of Darwin. The 3,000 kilometer solar car race had 32 vehicles speeding off at about 8:30 am GMT through the hot and humid weather which is perfect for the said race.

The race is being run in tandem with the Eco Challenge, which involves production and prototype eco-friendly vehicles that are, or soon will be, available to the public. And for Budweiser, the company best known for distributing their beer, has so far been performing up to par since its shift to solar energy to run their operations. To date, solar energy still powers their cold beer storage facility and has been performing magnificently.

The installed solar panels are producing approximately 59 – 62% of the 111,005 sq. ft. building’s energy. The average yearly savings for the plant are estimated to be over $100,000. That is a big lift to the savings on expenses which many companies are happy to do without today. With that, you may want to consider installing solar panels. They may carry an initial steep price but you just have to look at the future savings you get from them, the same thing that Budweiser is experiencing now.

Here is a new way of turning waste into fuel resources. The new concept comes from BioFuelBox called the FOG-to-Fuel plant. They are transforming waste FOG from trap grease that produces a premium, low sulfur, ASTM compliant biodiesel for on-road use.

As most countries continue to discard billions of grease for the maintenance of sewer systems each year. The NovoStream process was designed to help reduce these problems and eliminate a significant source of GHG. Moreover, BioFuelBox’s biodiesel is clean-burning with an 85% reduction in GHG emissions compared to petroleum-based diesel.

With all their cameras and gadgets, Kodak is bound to have a charger hidden under its portfolio. And after digging deep enough, Kodak does have them and one is even thrives on solar power. The Kodak Solar Charger KS100-C+2 can produce enough power to emit 1.5 charges that can power up a standard mobile phone or portable media player and of course, digital cameras.

It takes 28 hours of sunlight to fully charge up the charger, so it’s handy that it can also charge up via USB – although this takes a not-inconsiderable 14 hours. It goes on sale in September for £34.99.

Other solar chargers under Kodak worth noting include the KP100-C+2 (£19.99) which is palm-sized and can provide up to 40 hours of run time. The Kodak Mini Charger K630E C+2 HC and Kodak Mini Charger K630 C+2 LC are geared more towards the cost-conscious consumer and are priced at £9.99 and £8.99 respectively. Two Companies Convert Trash to Power

We have heard of recycling and apparently one of them includes this one which calls for the conversion of landfills and then soliciting methane gas landfills. If not trapped, the rising methane becomes a greenhouse gas at least 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide and accounts for 25 percent of all methane associated with human behavior.

In the conversion process, pipes running throughout the landfill vacuum up the gases and feed them into huge combustion engines that turn a generator. The resulting electricity is then transmitted to homes and offices via the electrical grid.

This may not only be great news for finding other means of generating power but can perhaps create more jobs while protecting the environment in the process. You can view the video report here.

Panasonic announced its official support for the MIT SEVT team which will take part in the Global Green Challenge set in October at Australia. Panasonic will be supplying high capacity lithium-ion batteries to the team. In return, the MIT SEVT team will be placing the Panasonic logo on the body of the vehicle.

The Global Green Challenge is an offshoot of the World Solar Challenge which started out in 1987 in Australia. With the call for alternative power and fuel alternatives for better transportation, it looks like the attention has been on these solar powered transport alternatives. Mostly conceptualized by students, it would not be surprising to find a new vehicle coming out from these project cars as one of the sure observers will be the car manufacturers themselves who are soliciting ideas from such events.

Solar cars use motors which run on electricity generated by solar panels. Excess electricity is stored in their batteries. The batteries supply electricity to the motor when the electricity from the solar panel is insufficient, due to overcast skies or at night.

Toyota Starts Focus on Cash for Clunkers Program

Most car dealers are now coming out with their list of cars eligible for the Cash for Clunkers program. Included in that batch is Toyota which has officially revealed its lineup of cars which consumers can consider getting after trading in their vehicle. There are 25 Toyota models offered which will qualify for car rebates ranging from $3,500 to $4,500.

The program will start today until November 1 or until they last. All Toyota and Scion passenger cars and most Toyota trucks, vans and SUVs are eligible for government incentives under the program. In addition, some Lexus models also qualify.

For the interested parties, you can check out the Toyota website to see the complete list of qualifying models. You can also make the necessary computations for what car you are trading in versus the Toyota model you plan on buying or leasing.

I was so excited when I ran into this article in this month’s Vegetarian Times magazine, because the issue is one of these myths that over time just forms a life of its own.

Water.

Do we really need 8 glasses of water a day? That is the age old question. According to the article water makes up 50 to 70 percent of our bodies. Everyday we lose the equivalent of between four and 13 8-ounce glasses of water a day – through perspiration, urine, exhaled moisture, etc. So to stay well hydrated the US government has come up with a recommended figure for both men and women. For men it’s 16 glasses and for women it’s 11 glasses each day.

So it is quite vital. But how do we get the requisite amount without overdosing on H20.

Mystery solved. You don’t literally need to drink 8 glasses to reach the allotted daily amount.

“You get much of the water you need from the FOODS you eat”.

They go on to provide several examples of foods that provide good H20, such as oatmeal – a bowl of this hearty stuff provides a whopping 8 ounces.

Quantity of Water in Popular Foods

A cup of soup – 8 ounces

A cup of rice – 5 ounces

A pear – 5 ounces

An Apple – 5 ounces

The myth of the 8 daily glasses came from overzealous health writers who encouraged people to drink eight glasses, over and above and the water in our foods. But according to research drinking in excess of the US government recommended amount is not necessary or beneficial.

So there you have it. The 8 glasses of water myth de-mystified. Once and for all.

Taiwan’s Eco-friendly Stadium Ready for 2009 World Games

The World Games are two months away and just in case you didn’t know, they will be held in Taiwan. In preparation for the world event, Taiwan has build a new stadium that is oozing with eco-friendly considerations starting from the power source which is generated by the 8,844 solar panels installed. These panels are expected to generate 1.14 kWh which should be more than enough for the games.

So what happens to the excess power? The surplus energy will be sold during the non-game period. Thus, it won’t really be going to waste. As far as materials used in the construction of the breathtaking structure, the National Stadium in Kaohsiung City materials were all sourced locally.

“Not only does the solar panel system provide electricity during the games, but the surplus energy can also be sold during the non-game period. This is an unprecedented case of solar energy exploit on our island. Besides the fact, that the stadium conforms to the trend of “Energy Saving & Carbon Reduction”, it is also a new representative of sport stadiums.”

The Toyota Prius is aiming to change the overall concept of motoring. We have also heard over the last couple of days that the Prius is coming out with competitive prices in line with the pricing gimmick of the Honda Insight. But while everyone is concerned about these issues, Kyocera has vouched that they too have an important role in supporting the Toyota Prius; the solar ventilation system.

The system ventilates the air inside of the car by using the electricity generated by the solar module on the rooftop to drive the fans while the car is parked during the daytime. This feature automatically moderates temperature rise inside of the vehicle even during hot seasons.

The eco-friendliness of the Toyota Prius is evident and Kyocera aims to be of assistance towards this new vehicle offering from the touted Japanese manufacturer. With so much attention focused on the Toyota Prius, there is no doubt that this vehicle is certainly trying to cover all bases including its solar power requirements.

Kyocera Announces Solar Ventilation System Support for Prius

Minneapolis Airport Turning to Wind Power

When it comes to wind power, one would think it refers only to the aircrafts at airports. But as far as the Minneapolis Airport is concerned, it is all about installing 10 wind-powered electricity generators and purchasing an electric-powered utility vehicle for use at the airport.

The 1 kilowatt wind turbines were mounted on the roof of Airport Fire Station 1, located at 6920 34th Ave. South, just northeast of the Humphrey Terminal. Placement was designed to maximize use of prevailing northwest winds. Each unit has five black fan blades and a shroud to protect the blades and turbines from snow, ice, birds or other obstacles to efficient operation. Manufactured by Aerovironment, the 10 units together are expected to generate 10 kilowatts of electricity per hour, on average. Total cost of the equipment, which has an estimated life of more than 20 years, was $94,000.

The MAC’s new Cushman Motors e-Ride exv2 electric utility vehicle is equipped with a 72 volt AC motor with a driving range of 45 to 55 miles per charge. The vehicle will be used primarily by parking management staff, although the MAC will test it for other potential uses as well. Unlike hybrids, the Cushman utility vehicle is powered entirely by electricity. It uses no fossil fuels, emits no exhaust, operates quietly and can be powered for a cost of approximately $202 per year. The vehicle was purchased for $22,265.

Big Incentives Available On 2009 Zenn Neighborhood EV Car

Do you know what a neighborhood EV is? It’s a new breed of eco friendly low speed cars geared for urban commuters and for commercial fleets such as gated communities, airports, resorts, municipalities and college campuses. Since they’re classified as NEV’s, neighborhood electric vehicles, they are usually limited to only 35 MPH roads.

Essentially the car is for those who normally don’t need to travel far or long. The Zenn EV car is manufactured in Canada by the zero-emission ZMC, Zenn Motor Company and the car is all electric, not a hybrid.

The low speed neighborhood EV gets 30 to 35 miles per charge when fully charged. To fully recharge, it takes about 8 hours although ZMC mentions one gets about 80% driveability at about 4 hours of charging. You just plug it in to a standard 120 electrical outlet from your home.

Incentives Available Till June 2009

The MSRP on the Zenn NEV is $15,995, but through the end of June 2009 one can snatch one up for $9,995 due to two incentives. First is a rebate of $4,995 available to those who join the Zenn Ambassador program and second is a federal tax credit of $1,250.

If you’re in the market for an uncomplicated, all electric, zero-emission, good looking, low speed, all weather, fully equipped, two seat vehicle, give the Zenn NEV a test drive.

California Emphasizes on Low Carbon Fuel Standards

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger is bound to smile now that his concepts are being adapted in California. The State of California takes its cue from the regulation on Low Carbon Fuel Standard, calling for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from California’s transportation fuels by 10 percent by 2020.

The regulation encourages the use of four primary low carbon alternative fuels for transportation: hydrogen, electricity, natural gas and biomethane. Two of the four fuels, natural gas and biomethane, are in the form of fuel (CNG and LNG) provided by Clean Energy Fuels Corp., North America’s leader in clean transportation.

“The new standard means we can begin to break our century-old dependence on petroleum and provide California with greater energy security,” said California ARB Chairman Mary D. Nichols in making the announcement.

“This regulation confirms the value of using domestic natural gas as a low carbon alternative fuel for transportation as California and the nation seek to clean the air and reduce dependence on imported petroleum,” said Andrew J. Littlefair, Clean Energy president and CEO. “Domestic CNG and LNG already exceed the state’s 2020 goal of 10% carbon reduction.”

One notable drawback of the HYmini mentioned by GadgetReview’s testers is that it’s not compatible with either the iPod Shuffle or even worse, the iPhone. Non-Shuffle iPods are OK though, as they connect via the HYmini’s included USB connector. On the other hand, one commenter disputes this, stating the “iPhone is designed to switch from 12V to 5V power source for recharging when it is plugged to the computer/laptop.”

Home theater setups take a new twist as the first ever solar powered home theater is born. The Home Theater Specialists of America have teamed up with vendors to deliver the first-ever solar powered home theater.

The home theater was installed and attached to solar panels, which completely power the home theater. The “Guiltless Green Home Theater,” unveiled at the group’s spring meeting earlier this week, will soon be available to the consumer market.

Components include a Sharp projector, a 100″ Stewart Filmscreen, six SpeakerCraft in-wall speakers, an Integra AV receiver, Monster Cable wiring, Lutron lighting, Universal Remote Control control, and furniture from Salamander. HiFi House designed and installed the theater, with some help from LG Energy solutions

The home theater, HTSA’s first green project, can provide up to 19 hours of off-the-grid usage. The initial installation, using four panels, was conducted at a spec house in Newtown Square, Pa.

First Solar Powered Guiltless Green Home Theater

The port of Los Angeles is having a green moment with the installation of solar panels covering an area of seventy one and half square feet, which is possibly a world record on its own. However, this is more than just solar or world records the port authorities are setting a magnificent example that other organisations should be taking note of.

The building to be covered will be the World Cruise Centre and the work is expected to be completed by the end of the year at an estimated cost of $9 million and will generate around one MW of power. Nevertheless, this is first stage as an additional installation of 1.16 million square feet is planned that will be completed over the next years or so.

Port Of LA Investing In Solar

Florida Solar Plant To Serve 11,000 Households

The Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) are in the process of developing the second largest solar power plant in the world at their Indaintown site. The company have signed an agreement with building firm Lauren Engineers and Constructors, who will build the plant on a five hundred acre site.

The plant will be using around two hundred thousand parabolic mirrors to produce a massive 155,000 MWh per year. What is more the company say that over the life of the power plant, estimated to be around thirty years, 2.75 million tons of greenhouse emissions will be saved, that is the equivalent to removing from the roads, around nineteen thousand cars.

For people wary about the energy consumption that they use, here is a great new invention that can surely cut down the watts. The new device is optimized for low forward conduction loss, has a nominal RMS current rating of 1695A and a surge current rating of 10.5kA. The device is encapsulated in a 47mm (1.85”) pole face hermetic pressure contact package using Westcode’s advanced alloy free process.

The new phase control device is optimised for very low on-state voltage, when compared to similar devices in the same voltage class, with a forward volt drop of 2.0 Volts at 1000A. This new thyristor is part of IXYS’ global strategy of introducing power semiconductors that improve the energy efficiency of electrical power systems.

The low conduction loss makes the device ideal for line frequency applications such as front-end rectification as well as all controlled rectifier applications up to a few hundred hertz. Other applications for which the device is ideally suited include: DC drives, load commutated inverters and excitation equipment, power and motor control for electrical trains, high power generators, UPS’s and renewable energy applications, including solar power generators and wind turbine generators.

The devices are available in two voltage classes and two package options: N0845NC600 & N0845NC650, which are rated at 6.0kV & 6.5kV, respectively, and housed in a 26mm (1”) thick package and N0845NG600 & N0845NG650, which are rated at 6.0kV & 6.5kV, respectively, and housed in a 35mm (1.38”) thick package.

I believe that we are going to see major innovation in the coming year (and next) of all sorts related to solar implementation. From cool solar gadgets to better faster and easier solar installs. People who have wanted to try solar energy in their homes, cars, work, etc will now be able to buy and or install it with the help of grants, loans and other government aid.

The big drivers of change are going to be small companies who receive the federal and or state aid, as these small businesses are the ones who are going to create affordable consumer solar power devices and services.
