The Solar “Shelf” For Cars

This concept seems to be one of those usual car shades placed at the spoiler part of the car. But they are really solar powered “shelves” as Leon Zhu of China would call it, serving as a shade for the car when not in use. When fully charged, this device helps power in-car electronic systems such as the air-conditioning system and other electronic-related devices. It is foldable and hopefully fastened because if not, it may eventually expand and pose as a hazard for other nearby cars or worse, get lost just like a piece of paper without something to bind them together.

Solar car racing is something familiar and another one just went underway in Australia which began in the northern city of Darwin. The 3,000 kilometer solar car race had 32 vehicles speeding off at about 8:30 am GMT through the hot and humid weather which is perfect for the said race.

The race is being run in tandem with the Eco Challenge, which involves production and prototype eco-friendly vehicles that are, or soon will be, available to the public. Solar power has been the new life stream of most business wanting to buck the trend of rising energy costs and of course to adopt the eco-friendly tag. And for Budweiser, the company best known for distributing their beer, has so far been performing up to par since its shift to solar energy to run their operations. To date, solar energy still powers their cold beer storage facility and has been performing magnificently.

The installed solar panels are producing approximately 59 – 62% of the 111,005 sq. ft. building’s energy. The average yearly savings for the plant are estimated to be over $100,000. That is a big lift to the savings on expenses which many companies are happy to do without today. With that, you may want to consider installing solar panels. They may carry an initial steep price but you just have to look at the future savings you get from them, the same thing that Budweiser is experiencing now.

With all their cameras and gadgets, Kodak is bound to have a charger hidden under its portfolio. And after digging deep enough, Kodak does have them and one is even thrives on solar power. The Kodak Solar Charger KS100-C+2 can produce enough power to emit 1.5 charges that can power up a standard mobile phone or portable media player and of course, digital cameras.

It takes 28 hours of sunlight to fully charge up the charger, so it’s handy that it can also charge up via USB – although this takes a not-inconsiderable 14 hours. It goes on sale in September for £34.99.

Other solar chargers under Kodak worth noting include the KP100-C+2 (£19.99) which is palm-sized and can provide up to 40 hours of run time. The Kodak Mini Charger K630E C+2 HC and Kodak Mini Charger K630 C+2 LC are geared more towards the cost-conscious consumer and are priced at £9.99 and £8.99 respectively. These panels are expected to generate 1.14 kWh which should be more than enough for the games.

So what happens to the excess power? The surplus energy will be sold during the non-game period. Thus, it won’t really be going to waste. As far as materials used in the construction of the breathtaking structure, the National Stadium in Kaohsiung City materials were all sourced locally.

The Toyota Prius is aiming to change the overall concept of motoring. We have also heard over the last couple of days that the Prius is coming out with competitive prices in line with the pricing gimmick of the Honda Insight. But while everyone is concerned about these issues, Kyocera has vouched that they too have an important role in supporting the Toyota Prius; the solar ventilation system.

The system ventilates the air inside of the car by using the electricity generated by the solar module on the rooftop to drive the fans while the car is parked during the daytime. This feature automatically moderates temperature rise inside of the vehicle even during hot seasons.

The eco-friendliness of the Toyota Prius is evident and Kyocera aims to be of assistance towards this new vehicle offering from the touted Japanese manufacturer. With so much attention focused on the Toyota Prius, there is no doubt that this vehicle is certainly trying to cover all bases including its solar power requirements.

It airs on Wednesday, April 29th on ABC. Ed, who is an ardent conservationist and eco friendly activist, will share his life and his home with his wife Rachelle who is also set to join in.

People looking for a reliable solar charger on-the-go are going to want this one. The HYmini is a stylish, portable wind turbine that is amazingly versatile, saving up green electricity and dishing it out to 5V devices as required. It comes with a variety of connectors and can be mounted to your bike or your arm.

HYmini comes in your choice of green, black or white and includes a “1200 mAh built-in Lithium Ion Polymer rechargeable battery power bank”. The battery stores both wind-generated power and also solar power generated by miniSOLAR, a small self-contained solar panel included in the main HYmini package but also sold separately.

One notable drawback of the HYmini mentioned by GadgetReview’s testers is that it’s not compatible with either the iPod Shuffle or even worse, the iPhone. Non-Shuffle iPods are OK though, as they connect via the HYmini’s included USB connector. On the other hand, one commenter disputes this, stating the “iPhone is designed to switch from 12V to 5V power source for recharging when it is plugged to the computer/laptop.”

First Solar Powered Guiltless Green Home Theater

Home theater setups take a new twist as the first ever solar powered home theater is born. The Home Theater Specialists of America have teamed up with vendors to deliver the first-ever solar powered home theater.

The home theater was installed and attached to solar panels, which completely power the home theater. The “Guiltless Green Home Theater,” unveiled at the group’s spring meeting earlier this week, will soon be available to the consumer market.

Components include a Sharp projector, a 100″ Stewart Filmscreen, six SpeakerCraft in-wall speakers, an Integra AV receiver, Monster Cable wiring, Lutron lighting, Universal Remote Control control, and furniture from Salamander. HiFi House designed and installed the theater, with some help from LG Energy solutions

The home theater, HTSA’s first green project, can provide up to 19 hours of off-the-grid usage. The initial installation, using four panels, was conducted at a spec house in Newtown Square, Pa.

First Solar Powered Guiltless Green Home Theater

Port Of LA Investing In Solar

The port of Los Angeles is having a green moment with the installation of solar panels covering an area of seventy one and half square feet, which is possibly a world record on its own. However, this is more than just solar or world records the port authorities are setting a magnificent example that other organisations should be taking note of.

The building to be covered will be the World Cruise Centre and the work is expected to be completed by the end of the year at an estimated cost of $9 million and will generate around one MW of power. Nevertheless, this is first stage as an additional installation of 1.16 million square feet is planned that will be completed over the next years or so.

Port Of LA Investing In Solar

Florida Solar Plant To Serve 11,000 Households

The Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) are in the process of developing the second largest solar power plant in the world at their Indaintown site. The company have signed an agreement with building firm Lauren Engineers and Constructors, who will build the plant on a five hundred acre site.

The plant will be using around two hundred thousand parabolic mirrors to produce a massive 155,000 MWh per year. What is more the company say that over the life of the power plant, estimated to be around thirty years, 2.75 million tons of greenhouse emissions will be saved, that is the equivalent to removing from the roads, around nineteen thousand cars.

So you think everyone is busy transforming and renovating their homes to cater to solar power eh? Well you may say solar power is going to the birds but that is exactly the concept of this solar powered house.

The Solar Birdhouse is exactly what it says. The roof has a solar panel that charges a small battery. At sunset a sensor turns on the illuminated perch, creating a whimsical glow in your garden and hopefully makes it easier for your birdies to get home. The entire thing is made out of gorgeous meranti wood and measures 7.1 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches.

Studylite Solar Powered Lamps

At some point, students would need lamps to assist them in their needs. Apparently there is one new lamp in the market at the moment and it runs on solar power.

To charge up the light, it has an attached solar panel that charges a NimH battery, that will then last up to six hours. The halo design utilizes 24 LED lights, that are apparently set up in such a way that they’ll be more comfortable than the standard lamp.

This was created by an Indian company to help out low-income students in developing countries, especially in areas that have issues with power shortages. With this, even when the power is out, you could still continue studying. The lamp is priced at $33, which isn’t bad, but it does seem a bit steep to be marketed towards low-income students.

Solar Cells Run Off Like Printing

Flexible solar cells are a remarkable feat of engineering; they are flexible, small and reasonably cheap method of producing renewable energy. This means that one day in the not too distant future solar cells could be printed on machines in a similar way as bank notes.

Work is already being carried out by CSIRO’s Future Manufacturing Flagship in Australia, they are investing in a three year project to find economic ways to produce solar cells on a reel to reel basis, and this is being done with the help of Securency International a banknote printing company. Once printed these solar cells can be cut or shaped to fit onto almost any surface.

Solar Cells Run Off Like Printing

SunPower to Put Up Solar Power Plant in Italy

SunPower Corp. and Sunshire have reportedly come to terms to design and build a 2.2-megawatt solar electric power plant in Tolentino, Italy.

This is the first solar power plant agreement to be announced on behalf of SunPower’s Italian subsidiary, SunPower Italia S.r.l. The project, which will be financed by regional banks via a leasing agreement, is the first phase of a planned 7.1-megawatt development that is expected to be completed this year.

At the site, SunPower will utilize SunPower panels, the most efficient solar panels commercially available, and the proprietary SunPower(R) Tracker technology, which follows the sun during the day and delivers up to 25 percent more energy than fixed-tilt systems.

These great looking lights look a bit like a hatching bird but only its legs have come out of the shell and somehow the chick has managed to stand. However, in reality things like that do not happen, or do they? These solar powered lamps are quite cute looking and would make a great addition to apartment living.

The lamps are the brain child of Berlin based designer, Michael Hilgers who has added a great touch by making the legs and feet orange to give them a real chick look. They come in two varieties, the solar powered version and the less technical tea light powered version.

Whenever there is something unusual going on in Japan you could put money on it that it is going to have something to do with technology. But in this case, the technology used is of the green type, which is just brilliant.

This particular tourist attraction is actually a tunnel at the Gotemba’s Toki no Sumika eco-friendly resort that boasts hot springs etc. This tunnel has been fitted with three million solar powered lights, which operate from 1700 hrs to 2130 hrs. It’s a bit far to travel to, but interesting none the less.

Electrically assisted bike are popular and have been around for some time now, but they are about to get a makeover with the introduction of a new solar power charging system. Powacycle will be including this into their range of bikes known as Infineum.

Obviously, the solar charger only operates when the bike is parked, but it saves the long term problem of having to find somewhere to plug the bike into a power point. However, at the same time, in order for the solar charger to work the bike is going to have to be left outside. What a dilemma!

A while ago sales of solar panels and wind turbines were going through the roof, but due to the recent financial crisis banks are making it difficult to borrow money and therefore these projects which would have be going ahead today, have been put on hold until there are signs of change.

This has put pressure on the industry too as lack of sales means poor revenues, this has meant that companies who produce these products are suffering, in fact the industry as whole are predicting a decline of between thirty and fifty per cent. If this continues then firms could up closing down meaning job losses and the loss of reasonably priced eco friendly power generating equipment.

This is great because it is a solar powered boat, this type of transport is particularly good at being powered by the sun, it is probably because they are light and easily controlled. However, this boat is even better than that because it has been made from recycled and natural materials too.

The boat, which has initially been called the Loon is made from recycled plastics, bamboo and natural fibres, the roof has the solar panels and can generate a 1000 w of green power. Nevertheless, another cool idea is that when the boat is docked up and the batteries are fully charged any excess power is fed back into the grid.

Alcatraz Gets A Sun And Wind Powered Boat

With over 1.4 million visitors every year taking a trip across to Alcatraz Island that works out at a lot of fuel and a huge carbon footprint, luckily Alcatraz Cruises have recently launched their solution to this the problem, the Hornblower Hybrid ferry.

This vessel has two wind turbines and a solar array, which generates power for part of the propulsion system, lighting and even the navigation equipment. The vessel is capable of carrying a hundred and sixty passengers at a time, although there are plans for another vessel to join the fleet.
