Here’s a genius idea for directly converting sunlight into usable DC/AC energy.  Great idea but I think there will be more innovations required for this to actually work.

This particular tourist attraction is actually a tunnel at the Gotemba’s Toki no Sumika eco-friendly resort that boasts hot springs etc. This tunnel has been fitted with three million solar powered lights, which operate from 1700 hrs to 2130 hrs. It’s a bit far to travel to, but interesting none the less.

But LG seems to have taken the step ahead as it has launched a 14.1 LCD panel that thrives on reflective rays of the sun to operate. Such is a great alternative towards addressing the power consumption of computers and LCD monitors today and this is definitely a great step towards that direction.

The panel uses selective reflection plates that exist in the backlight panels and the Backlight Data Signal Switching Technology to switch from reflective mode in high luminance setting, which is sunlight, to transmissive mode in low lights in indoors and at night. This panel is the first of its kind that easily switches from backlight use to outdoor reflective mode “with the touch of a button”.

After many submissions the X Prize panel has come up with 3 finalists. Part of competition involved submitting a 2 minute video with your idea. Eco Geek reports on the 3 finalists and they are as follows:

1. Jonathan Dreher – Jonathan’s idea asks that we look at our energy consumption in great and mass detail and change our lifestyles to reflect a more Earth friendly way of life for the betterment of all. No technology is needed and everyone can participate. The energy savings will be million fold and help to decrease global warming.

If just 10% of American households reduced their consumption by 10%, he says, we would collectively save $1 billion in energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions by 8 million tons.

2. Alan Silva -Alan’s idea is based on making American homes energy independent and focusing on getting off the grid completely. He wishes for better and more high tech innovations that will facilitate this.

He goes on to describe an example home with concentrated solar panels and small wind turbines on the roof, underground flywheels to store the energy, solar tracking devices, underground heat exchangers, and the like. Alan finishes off by highlighting the financial, geopolitical and environmental benefits of going off the grid.

3. Kyle Good – Kyle’s idea revolves around completely overhauling and revolutionizing batteries. As batteries power up most modern devices, Kyle feels engineers should be focusing on making them more like super batteries that can power up everything from small devices such as mp3 players to electric cars and beyond. A super battery if you will, or as they are calling it, an ultra capacitor. A more advanced, more affordable, and more earth friendly battery.

Which reminds me of the Back To The Future movie, where i believe a ultra capacitor powered the time traveling Delorean. (i think)

How are these companies green?

GoodAdvocado is a small hosting company that is 100% carbon neutral and also plants 1 tree for every new account.  GoodAdvocado would be good choice for a small business owner who need good customer service since most small hosting companies have faster customer-service in general.  I do really like the fact that they plant 1 tree for every new website created, it would be even better if they could put up some pictures of that.

At $4.99, this is probably the cheapest green hosting you are going to get.

HostPapa is another good choice for green hosting.  They use 100% green energy sources, here’s an except of how they do it:

After an energy audit by an outside provider to calculate our total electrical energy consumption from traditional sources, HostPapa purchased “green energy tags” or certificates from a certified green energy supplier. That supplier calculates the total energy consumption of our operation and uses their suppliers of green energy to pump in 100% equivalent energy back into the power grid. This effectively cuts down on the carbon dioxide-producing (CO2) energy that we normally would have required from non-green energy sources.

EthicalHost donates 10% of our pre-tax profits to social and environmental organizations.  They also use 100% wind power through energy companies Vision Quest and the Pembina Institute.

ThinkHost is another company that use power of the wind and sun to power their servers. Here’s some things they do beyond their own business:

Probably most of you have heard of DreamHost as they are a pretty big hosting company well known in the hosting industry.  Dreamhost is an employee-run hosting company and they even claim to use recyclable coffee cups, which is a good thing.

Here’s an excerpt of how they are green:

Putting a price on carbon output is just one way to help make the world a better place. It’s a first step towards true energy sustainability. Organizations large and small are constantly working on reducing their environmental emissions. Oh definitely, if you are running/starting a small business, you will need to setup some kind of website.  These hosts are more eco-friendly and green than most regular hosting companies and I don’t see why not you shouldn’t support these green businesses.

To start making solar panels from broken solar cells you need a few things.

15-25 watt soldering iron

Light duty 60/40 electronics rosin core solder (radio shack $5.00 for a roll). You can use a silver solder, but I think it’s too expensive, and the difference in resistance is minimal. So I just use regular old electronics solder.

Multimeter

Pencil eraser

Solar tabbing pre tinned ribbing (ebay 100 feet is like $20 bucks)

A good flat sturdy working surface ( I use a piece of glass, but whatever you have will do)

This time they are going to manufacture an Air Powered Car for the masses in India. This is one of the reasons, Tata Group, was recently named one of “The World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” by the magazine, Fast Company.

As of note, the MDI Air Car will only be manufactured and distributed in India. Let’s see if the car makes it to the US, only time will tell.

The Tata Nano will be sold only initially in India, then Latin Ameria, Asia, and other developing nations. This is so cool and although many environmentalists are up in arms about it, i think in the USA it would be a great boon. The argument is that in India most people now use bikes and or scooters to get around, so with this very low priced car, many people will now go out and get a car, which is great for them, but bad for the air and pollution levels in India.

The Tata Nano is a very basic mode of transportation, it does not come with a radio, power steering, passenger side mirror, or A/C, and features only one wiper blade. Yes, there will be deluxe models which will feature more than the entry level model. Also the car sports a very small 2 cylinder engine, but packs a fuel-efficient 50 MPG.

The car as far looks and design is similar as “the bug”, the VW beetle, with some subtle differences. I like it. But dont go looking for it at your local dealer, the car wont be available in the states for atleast some years.

The energy-friendly LED, Halogen, and CFL, are what they are to be replaced with. These are pricier (by a few dollars) but they also last much much longer and they will also save you moola in annual energy bills.

The incandescent lightbulbs are to be phased out over the next 10 to 12 years and no longer to be used. A tall task since Americans have been using the incandescents for over 125 years. But very doable.

I have found some inexpensive CFL’s at my local Walmart, they go for about $10 for a pack of 2 or 3. Their wattage is set up a bit differently too, a 13 watt CFL equals the same ouput as a traditional 60 watt incandescent. So look for the 13 watt packages.

It is important to research a prospective recycler and find out more about the operation and its recycing process? Where do the computers go? Are they refurbished? What about computers that cannot be refurbished?

Also PC manufacuters should create components that make it easier to recycle them once they are at the end of their useful life. Some major computer manufacturers such as Apple, Dell, and HP have started to implement a give-back-program where consumers can send in their old PC or drop them off at a designated center. Hopefully other PC makers will soon follow suit.

Is recycling computers a bad idea?

No, i dont think so. It is a matter of doing some research and/ or spending a few extra dollars with a premium recycler to make sure your PC or other e-waste doesn’t end up in China or Africa un-recycled after all. Also there are a variety of things you can do with your old PC besides dropping it off at a recycling center, you can donate the used PC to a computer geek, who will refurbish it, and give it to a local church, non-profit, school, or clinic, etc. For more ideas, see my other article titled, Recycle Your PC.

From what i can gather the way this practice works is that an airplane with some sort of thermal imaging whatchamacallit is able to transcribe the heat of the homes. This info is then made available to the general public via this website, the Haringey Interactive Heat Loss Map, and others can see who is in the red (good) and who is in the blue (bad) .

Hayden, an Oxford grad, worked for Ford in Europe a few years back, and noticed time and again, that the print stations around him were flooded with wasted paper from bad printing jobs. It was then in 2005, that the idea was born to do something about this mindless workplace waste. Green Print is a software that with patented technology, scans the page or pages, and leaves out unnecessary text or pictures (such as net ads or large photos) from the print out “saving paper, ink, money, and millions of trees“.

This is a novel idea created by a young and socially-responsible entrepreneur. Congrats to Hayden!

“Dr. Belcher’s research with viruses, proteins and yeast offers hope for new, ground-breaking solutions to the world’s energy problems. It holds out the prospect of using nano-technology in a variety of ways,” he declared.

This new concept features radical styling, a diesel engine which acts as a generator for the electric motor. It is hoped that the as-of-yet unnamed concept will be able carry at least one of the £4000, gyroscope-controlled devices for use in town once you’ve parked.

GM is also working on active aerodynamics cheap enough to be used on future Corsas which will close the grille, lower the car and even fold the wing mirrors in at speed to reduce drag. Radically redesigned underbodies will have the same effect.

GM will also use the Frankfurt show to launch a series of other green models. A European version of its US Equinox fuel cell car will make its debut. Badged GM HydroGen4, 10 will be deployed on the streets of Berlin, which already has hydrogen filling stations.

And GM will officially launch its ecoFlex models, starting with the 119g/km Corsa 1.3CDTi. The ecoFlex badge will mark the least polluting cars in the Opel/Vauxhall line-up, using smaller capacity diesel engines, as well as compressed natural gas in some other European markets. The Cadillac BLS will get a biofuel option from autumn this year, with most Vauxhalls to follow by 2010, likely to be led by a flex-fuel Vectra as early as next year.

GM Europe president Carl-Peter Forster said, “You have to do the right thing, and be seen to do the right thing.”

“The aim is to keep the burden off the smaller cars. The bigger ones will get more technology, but are likely to get more expensive too. We don’t make a lot of money at the moment and to absorb all the cost ourselves would nearly put us
out of business.”

EcoShopper wrote about the Asus Bamboo Laptop, and aside from an eco-friendly piece of machinery, it is a stunningly looking laptop. From the picture i have provided, see the rich bamboo detail on the laptops panel. It is also a first.

Modular in design it allows for easy upgrading of components and is in itself completely recyclable. Side note, remember that many big time electronic and or office retailers like Staples, offer recycling programs for computers, laptops, monitors, and printers.

The Asus Bamboo laptop is not yet available, it is to be released in 2008. Let’s see what kind of pricing this eco-electornic beauty will command.

We are all aware of the demand for technology’s fruits such as gizmos and gadgets and Apple will soon be launching a new phone called the iPhone which is supposedly green certified. Green certified in the sense that is has done away with the various harmful chemicals and toxins that has made the lives of people in peril.

Nokia and Sony Ericsson have also made the shift towards becoming more green conscious. E-waste has been another dimension towards the green campaign and through these efforts, Apple has made its own efforts to go green as well.

The iPhone shall be made available in the market by June 29, 2007. Everyone is bracing if this new green gadget will be a hit or a fluke. Let us wait a couple more days to see the result.
