Minneapolis Airport Turning to Wind Power

When it comes to wind power, one would think it refers only to the aircrafts at airports. But as far as the Minneapolis Airport is concerned, it is all about installing 10 wind-powered electricity generators and purchasing an electric-powered utility vehicle for use at the airport.

The 1 kilowatt wind turbines were mounted on the roof of Airport Fire Station 1, located at 6920 34th Ave. South, just northeast of the Humphrey Terminal. Placement was designed to maximize use of prevailing northwest winds. Each unit has five black fan blades and a shroud to protect the blades and turbines from snow, ice, birds or other obstacles to efficient operation. Manufactured by Aerovironment, the 10 units together are expected to generate 10 kilowatts of electricity per hour, on average. Total cost of the equipment, which has an estimated life of more than 20 years, was $94,000.

The MAC’s new Cushman Motors e-Ride exv2 electric utility vehicle is equipped with a 72 volt AC motor with a driving range of 45 to 55 miles per charge. The vehicle will be used primarily by parking management staff, although the MAC will test it for other potential uses as well. Unlike hybrids, the Cushman utility vehicle is powered entirely by electricity. It uses no fossil fuels, emits no exhaust, operates quietly and can be powered for a cost of approximately $202 per year. The vehicle was purchased for $22,265.

Minneapolis Airport Turning to Wind Power

Duke Energy Wind Power Moving Well

The intent of Duke Energy to build a 66-turbine wind power project remains on schedule to start construction this spring, thanks to a unanimous vote by a state environmental commission to approve the project’s permit. With the need for more energy alternatives, it seems that this breakthrough broadens the options that Casper, Wyoming will have in the future.

The Campbell Hill project will generate 99 megawatts (MW) of clean, renewable energy when it comes on line at the end of the year. Duke Energy expects to receive the permit to build the Campbell Hill project from the state in April, after which construction will begin.

PacifiCorp, which operates as Rocky Mountain Power in Wyoming, will purchase all of the power from the project as part of a 20-year agreement announced in September 2008. Wind turbines at the Campbell Hill site will be capable of producing power for approximately 25,000 to 30,000 homes annually.

A while ago sales of solar panels and wind turbines were going through the roof, but due to the recent financial crisis banks are making it difficult to borrow money and therefore these projects which would have be going ahead today, have been put on hold until there are signs of change.

This has put pressure on the industry too as lack of sales means poor revenues, this has meant that companies who produce these products are suffering, in fact the industry as whole are predicting a decline of between thirty and fifty per cent. If this continues then firms could up closing down meaning job losses and the loss of reasonably priced eco friendly power generating equipment.

Europe Could Become Wind Powered

In a recent report from The Netherlands’ Society for Nature and Environment, they claim that by 2050 parts of Europe could be in a position not to be dependent on oil and gas from the middle east and Russia. This is because they believe that the North Sea is quite capable of producing 13,400 tera watt hours of electricity.

There are seven countries that border with the North Sea and it is these countries that would benefit from the North Sea being used to generate electricity. However clearly there is going to be a demand for fuel for vehicles so supplies would need to come from somewhere.

Alcatraz Gets A Sun And Wind Powered Boat

With over 1.4 million visitors every year taking a trip across to Alcatraz Island that works out at a lot of fuel and a huge carbon footprint, luckily Alcatraz Cruises have recently launched their solution to this the problem, the Hornblower Hybrid ferry.

This vessel has two wind turbines and a solar array, which generates power for part of the propulsion system, lighting and even the navigation equipment. The vessel is capable of carrying a hundred and sixty passengers at a time, although there are plans for another vessel to join the fleet.

This wind farm in the developing world will be producing a massive thirty per cent of the nation’s power, which is one wind farm providing almost a third of the country’s power requirements. Kenya’s demand for power only increase around eight per cent per year, so could be that these developing countries are destined to become the greenest of all?

But for Coca Cola, a company known to invest heavily on outdoor advertising, using other means of energy like let us say “wind power” to power a large billboard in Times Square is certain to draw some attention outside the actual ad.

“Coke said the switch of its billboard alone will be the equivalent of taking 75 cars off roads or converting 38 houses to clean energy for a year,”

There is no doubt that this is a marketing ploy but as long as there is a touch of eco-friendly elements behind it, why not?

There have been several wineries that have gone eco-friendly as far as producing world class wines today. Using organic and eco-friendly means, we continue to enjoy wine going as far as eco-friendly packaging. But today, we now see a number of them looking at a new environmental planning stages and this has to do with the necessary power to aid most wine production processes.

For Praire State Winery, they are in the process of applying wind energy to their whole business with the use of wind turbines, another step that can further push them to the ranks of more eco-friendly business establishments.

“We really wanted our winery to be green. Many people may have a shock at first but if you think about it, looking for alternative energy source such as installing your own solar panels for energy or even the wind turbines can really be a good learning experience. Through these innovations, people may learn to how to value energy and saving a lot on energy costs in the process.

Just look at how this couple swapped their home for an off-grid place.

“We’ve learnt to adopt an older, more natural rhythm,” della-Porta says. “We spend hours a week maintaining our power supply, checking storage batteries, making sure the wind turbine is okay and monitoring water levels. Everything has double or triple backup. The cooking and the heating are powered by a solid-fuel Rayburn. And there is a separate bottle-gas cooker, which we use more in the summer, when the Rayburn is off.” Suddenly, that film-star lustre is fading.

With the climate getting more chaotic and nonrenewable resources running out, living off grid seems the logical next step. It isn’t just about saving money (in the long run, of course, as set-up costs are vast), but about reducing one’s carbon footprint to a mere baby step. It’s bizarre, then, that it wasn’t for either financial or ecological reasons that the couple decided to live off grid. “We were looking for something different, but we weren’t sure what or how,” says della-Porta, a product designer.

Roughing It May Help Explain Personal Generated Energy

Nuclear Power: Energy for the Masses, but at a Cost

The search for alternative energy solutions continues. As the world is looking to help address the rising cost of energy, as well as analyzing the effectiveness of current energy sources, we also need to determine whether we have sufficient enough sources to satisfy the world’s need for energy. While many are turning towards the usual hydrogen, solar and wind power solutions, another energy source, nuclear power has recently been inserted into the fray. But the real question is, would it do more good than bad?

We all know what nuclear power brings. It can provide a great solution for our energy needs, but a tentatively dire expense to our health. In fact, if you think of the nuclear disasters endured in the past, such as the nuclear disaster at the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 and the near-disaster at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, they are reason enough to strike nuclear power from the list of acceptable non-fossil and carbon energy sources.

So, at the moment, where do we really stand? Do we conserve or simply continue to be ignorant in order to meet our demands?

One thing that is for sure, relying solely on nuclear power will be suicide. We have a lot of problems already as far as climate change and global warming is concerned, and with the possibility of another disaster, might push us to the brink of extinction.

Rock Port, a small town in Missouri, has become the first city in the U.S. to be 100% wind powered.

Supposedly, their electric bills will freeze for the next 20 years.

Rock Port, MO 2/6/08. Rock Port Missouri is the first 100% wind powered community in the United States. To celebrate this tremendous achievement, a Green Switch Celebration will be held on Friday, April 18, 2008.

Rock Port’s 100% wind power status is due to four wind turbines located on agricultural lands within the city limits of Rock Port. The city of Rock Port uses approximately 13 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year. It is predicted that these four turbines will produce 16 million kilowatt hours each year. Excess wind generated electricity not used by Rock Port homes and businesses will move onto the transmission lines to be purchased by the Missouri Joint Municipal Utilities for use in other areas. This makes Rock Port, Missouri the first community in America capable of meeting its entire annual electricity demands from wind power!

The return of the sail ship

Imagine a cargo ship that is nearly 500 feet long being powered by the wind, obviously it is not a new concept as ships used to wind powered, by they were very different then, these cargo ships are way different.

The sail will be more like a kite as it allowed to drift over 600 feet above the ship, this clearly will not totally replace the engines as they are needed for manoeuvring and for power, but when the sail is deployed during the long journey the ship can save around 20% of the fuel consumption, which is not bad at all.

Focusing on the current crop of energy resources, known and developed according to the people who are aiming to provide the necessary sources today, there is room for other sources and this is perhaps where kinetic energy can serve best.

While most people are concentrating on automated and generated energy, we can find that alternative through the efforts of body motion. Sounds like it means a lot of work? Well technically it does. New take on wind farming

This is a great new idea that puts a new slant on wind farm. Instead of taking up valuable land or spoiling

the coastline with offshore wind farms. These turbines sit over the road and it is the turbulence of the vehicles passing below that drive the turbines around and it is this movement that generates the power.

The idea come from a student from Arizona State University, and each turbine would be capable of generating enough power to light up a medium sized apartment, even if the wind speed is only at a low 10 mph.

If this took off there are literally thousands of miles freeway that could be used for potential power generation in the future!

New take on wind farming

Cool new gadget due out at the end of October, HY Mini, it converts wind energy into power that can charge a cell phone, digital camera, iPod, PDA, and other small electronics.

For example, you can attach the HYmini to bike handlebars or your arm while jogging or walking and this eco friendly charger/adapter will collect power for later.

Swept Away Media writes:
“Spend an hour outside in the sun with HYmini and you’ll get enough power for 2 full hours of MP3 playtime. Ride your bike for an hour, with HYmini strapped on your arm, or mounted on the handlebars, and you’ll have enough power for over 50 digital photos or about 15 extra minutes on your cell phone. Mount HYmini on a car window, drive about 40 MPR, and you’ll generate enough power to listen to over 8 hours of music on your MP3 or chat on your cell for over 40 minutes”.

This is super neat and you will probably see more of this type of device in the coming months and years, but for now this is the first of its kind. Price is $50 for the basic wind power only model. There are optional solar panels one can buy.

The 59th Annual Emmy Awards were broadcast last nite and although i didn’t catch all of it, i caught maybe the last hour or so, it was the first to go carbon neutral.

Eva Longoria Looking Sassy

I did catch the Sopranos winning the final award for best drama, and James Spader for supporting actor. Oh! i also caught the Tony Bennett and Christina Aguilera number, that was a very cool duet.

EMMY GREEN HIGHLIGHTS:

The Shrine Auditorium will use clean “Green Power” generated from 100% renewable resources provided by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. This zero-emission electricity is part of the City of L.A.’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by obtaining 20% of its energy from renewable resources by 2010
The stage sets are reusable rentals; the carpeting on
stage and backstage is made from recycled plastic bottles
Biofuel generators, which use organic oils such as soybean or canola, are being
used as backup during the production of the show
Empire Limo is providing Hybrid and Flexfuel vehicles to transport talent to the Awards
Lighting on and off stage has been reduced by 15 percent.
Glass, plastic, metal and paper recycling bins are located throughout the Awards site
Scripts were printed on paper using 30% post-consumer recycled fiber
Backstage, and in the press tent, products by makeup artist Napoleon Perdis will
available for touch-ups. PETA approved Napoleon Perdis uses such all-natural products as organic beeswax in his Long Black Mascara, to chamomile and yarrow extract in his Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Skin Primer

State Incentives for Energy Efficiency Projects and Products

Wind farms could be a danger

Over the years we have seen a huge growth in the building of wind farms, naturally we all think that this is a great idea. Yet in smaller countries like the UK the wind farms are being built offshore, this is partly because of the limited land available for building on, and the opposition from residents of areas that have been marked as potential wind farm sites.

However there is increasing concern that the construction of these wind farms can be a danger to marine life and in particular whales and dolphins. When a wind turbine is constructed the noise from pile drivers can be heard up to 80 kms away, but the closer they the worse the effects, such as damaged hearing and behaviour patterns. This too can be said of the laying of the cables and ship movements.

At the moment there are five offshore wind farms in operation, while there are another fourteen planned. It is expected that by 2020 wind farms will account for around 20% of the UK power supply.

Last month i profiled an eco-friendly pizzeria which had delivery drivers in electric bikes called Galactic Pizza. Today i want to tell you about Pizza Fusion.

Pizza Fusion, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida has been in operation since 2006. This organic pizza franchise is a model of eco-friendliness in both their food products and their business activities. Started up by two college buds, their aim is create a business that is both profitable and socially responsible. This goal has led them to the Pizza Fusion concept, an eatery where the following initiatives take place:

Delivering their food in company owned hybrid vehicles
Powering their stores, corporate office and website 100% with renewable wind energy
Recycling and giving customers discounts for bringing back their pizza boxes to recycle them
Using only eco-friendly cleaners to sanitize all their stores
Using 100% post consumer recycled paper in all their collateral
Printing their collateral with soy inks
Designing and constructing their stores with renewable, reusable, and
recycled products according to the LEED construction rating system.
Serving their food in biodegradable containers made
from 100% corn starch which are designed to decompose in landfills in 30
days
Providing staff with eco-apparel made from 100% organic cotton
Hosting free environmentally based classes for kids every third Thursday of the month
that educates on the importance of eating organic and recycling
Donating money to local environmental causes

I only wish their was a Pizza Fusion in my town, let’s just say that as a vegetarian, i would patronize alot. I love their concept, their organic ingredients list, their hip and groovy restaurant look, and most of all that they opted to create a socially responsible business. Beautiful.

Everyone needs a vacation now and then, but we always seem to be persecuted for going abroad or even traveling to certain resorts. This can however be a thing of the past, with resorts like the Paradise Bay Villa Beach Resort and Spa, in Grenada.

They have gone to lengths to ensure that they are an eco friendly resort. The resort has built a wind turbine that provides more than enough electricity for the whole complex, purchase carbon offsets for their guests to cover the flights etc and to take it further they buy local organic produce whenever they can.

Spain to have offshore wind farms

Spain is already the world’s second largest producer of wind power. And is hoping to increase their reliance of this by passing a new law which will allow wind farms to be placed along the 4000 miles of coast line that makes up three sides of the country.

Spain already has more than 400 wind farms and 12,000 wind turbines on the mainland; these generate around eight per cent of the country’s total electrical consumption. This is about six million homes and actually reduces the country’s carbon emissions by 9.2 million tons.

Crush-A-Lightbulb Campaign

States to get $2 million grants

Two US states, Texas and Massachusetts have won $2 million worth of grants from the US Department of Energy, this is to help develop technology for the next generation of wind turbines, but these are not the average wind turbine, these are going to be huge with blades around 230 feet long.

There will not be many jobs created from these developments as the grants are going to already existing test centers, but once development has reached a level where they systems go into production and new wind farms are built.
