Toyota Starts Focus on Cash for Clunkers Program

Most car dealers are now coming out with their list of cars eligible for the Cash for Clunkers program. Included in that batch is Toyota which has officially revealed its lineup of cars which consumers can consider getting after trading in their vehicle. There are 25 Toyota models offered which will qualify for car rebates ranging from $3,500 to $4,500.

The program will start today until November 1 or until they last. All Toyota and Scion passenger cars and most Toyota trucks, vans and SUVs are eligible for government incentives under the program. In addition, some Lexus models also qualify.

For the interested parties, you can check out the Toyota website to see the complete list of qualifying models. You can also make the necessary computations for what car you are trading in versus the Toyota model you plan on buying or leasing.

Big Incentives Available On 2009 Zenn Neighborhood EV Car

Do you know what a neighborhood EV is? It’s a new breed of eco friendly low speed cars geared for urban commuters and for commercial fleets such as gated communities, airports, resorts, municipalities and college campuses. Since they’re classified as NEV’s, neighborhood electric vehicles, they are usually limited to only 35 MPH roads.

Essentially the car is for those who normally don’t need to travel far or long. The Zenn EV car is manufactured in Canada by the zero-emission ZMC, Zenn Motor Company and the car is all electric, not a hybrid.

The low speed neighborhood EV gets 30 to 35 miles per charge when fully charged. To fully recharge, it takes about 8 hours although ZMC mentions one gets about 80% driveability at about 4 hours of charging. You just plug it in to a standard 120 electrical outlet from your home.

Incentives Available Till June 2009

The MSRP on the Zenn NEV is $15,995, but through the end of June 2009 one can snatch one up for $9,995 due to two incentives. First is a rebate of $4,995 available to those who join the Zenn Ambassador program and second is a federal tax credit of $1,250.

If you’re in the market for an uncomplicated, all electric, zero-emission, good looking, low speed, all weather, fully equipped, two seat vehicle, give the Zenn NEV a test drive.

Bikes are great, they are eco friendly and good for the planet too, but some bikes are more greener than others, like this bike from Renovo. These bikes are handmade from wood, which has been described as nature’s carbon fibre; the bike frame itself only weighs between 3.5 and 4.5 pounds, but is very strong.

Renovo Hardwood Bicycles swears that their frames:

Absorb vibration better than steel, aluminium or carbon, producing a uniquely smooth ride

The fatigue life of wood exceeds steel or aluminium, and approaches carbon

Wood is not susceptible to crack propagation from dents like the metals

To ease up on vehicle congestion and to reduce carbon emissions, today was Car Free Day in the U.K.

The city of Inverness today was urging people to take alternate means of transportation to and from work, such as buses, trains, and bikes. Many opted to partake and were greeted with offers of free parking and free temporary bikes from a local group.

One dude even made a triathlon out of it by running, cycling, and even canoeing up a river to his job. Now that is green!

This was all part of Wednesday’s Car Free Day.

Normally, these two tags of cars would not matter as they cater towards the green awareness program sent forward by leading car manufacturers such as Toyota (hybrid) and General Motors (alternative fuel). But between the two, it seems that Toyota has the inside track since people are lesser inclined to understand what benefits they can get from alternative fuel.

From a glance, the public would care less of what one has to offer. But between the two, Toyota obviously offers green standards from the first day it sells one of its vehicles to its customers. GM is inclined more towards saving their production line and making them adaptable to the alternative fuels offered in the market today.

From what has been gathered, many are eagerly awaiting the 2008 Olympics to be held in Beijing. With bare some months to go, various criticisms have been solicited regarding the overall healthy environment of Beijing, particularly its worsening pollution problem that may not be entirely good for athletes coming in from various parts of the world.

While Beijing is attempting to reduce the pollution problem in time for the event, many are doubting the feasibility of choice for holding the event in Beijing to date. Containing the pollution problem at this point of time sounds a bit too late. But changing the venue of the Olympics may be a death wish of sorts as it will likely be cancelled due to lack of preparations. Of course this is a remote possibility.

Participating countries may opt not to participate if they feel that the environmental conditions governing Beijing at the moment are indeed becoming hazardous. However, don’t be surprised if you see various athletes wearing face masks to avoid inhaling health risk fumes once the Olympics commence.

And now for abit of green celebrity news, Michele Pfeiffer, who has recently been making appearances all over the talk show circuit, is now back in the limelight as she has three movies coming out this year.

Most recently she was on the David letterman show, where she talked about her move to a smaller quieter town, ker kids, upcoming movies, and her electric vehicle.

She said has had her EV for several years, but was afraid to drive it for long periods of time, as there weren’t many options available to her, to recharge the eco-friendly car. She says she will be using it again and sporting it around her hometown. Kudos to hot and sexy Michele for going green. (once again)

One of the top model hybrid cars of this Japan-based car manufacturing, the Prius, has been the prime target of consumers for their transportation needs today. The lifespan of all natural things last longer than the human life if they are cared for properly. However, the selfishness of some people tend to move towards simply thinking of themselves and not the younger generations who will be left with the problems of having to survive and deal with impending diminishing resources due to continued lack of attention given towards these valuable natural resources.

The glaciers and the polar ice caps are one good example. They are known to provide balance in the climate changes we have. However thanks to the continuous disregard by abusing nature through toxins, wastes and irrational practices, glaciers may just disappear earlier than expected. One can just imagine what people will have to deal with once an imbalance strikes the world.

The site is not just for kids in the UK, it can be used by kids of all ages from five to ninety five and from anywhere in the world, it is a really good way of seeing how your choices affect your community and on a global scale. My Abodo will show you the difference between what happens when you make choices for the good and for the bad of the eco system.

Prince Charles Gears for Carbon Neutral Living

No other than the Prince of Wales is doing his part in going green by being more carbon conscious starting it all from his very own household.

Fewer chartered planes, more train trips and a royal Jaguar that runs on cooking oil have helped Prince Charles achieve a carbon-neutral household, an annual review of the prince’s accounts said Tuesday.

The annual review by the prince’s Clarence House office said Charles cut his annual carbon emissions by 9 percent, to 3,775 tons, between April 1, 2006 and March 31 of this year. The prince offset those emissions by investing in an agency that promotes tree planting and sustainable energy projects. – Prince Charles becomes carbon neutral

If there are people who can truly help lead and make a stand on working more towards the growing green world we have, they are the people who lead countries and are widely renowned.

Now just when we thought Prince Charles was just another personality who could care less of the growing issue, here he is leading by example for his country and his home.

Owing to the fact that Canada has been suffering from harmful emissions, all efforts to reduce the greenhouse gases have been at play and put a stop to the worsening environment that they have been experiencing.

The Kyoto Protocol was conceptualized to help provide limits and control towards the growing issue of greenhouse gases leading to climate changes that have become noticeable and harmful to the territories and the world affected. The clean air we once used to breathe has been slowly diminished. The problem is evident and world leaders are befuddled on what to do to help answer the current issue of greenhouse gases and climate change.

To help uphold this alarming issue, a lot of rewards have been laid out to start making changes and reward groups, companies and individuals in putting a stop to the destruction of our ecological habitat. Hopefully it would hold since continued disregard will only prove futile efforts by all.

While there is really nothing against offering diesel-powered engines, its smoke emissions are the real culprits in environmental safety concerns.

Car manufacturers such as Honda have added this issue towards their continuous vehicular development and research prowess. It is evident that along with introducing new cars comes the duty of making sure that the environment stays clean and green. Honda has taken that step, and hopefully all car and vehicle manufacturers would do the same to uphold the remnants of a once an beautiful environment we had.

The G8 was originally a gathering of 65% of the world’s economy to tackle various issues concerning countries and the world. Among the famous issue that is currently on hand is that of the climate change where various views and insights with regard to how to handle the whole situation will be resolved.

Unfortunately, the G8 has been receiving various criticisms and rather than joining hands in resolving the issue, it seems that they have also garnered the ire of the consumers since bickering and disagreements on how to handle the issue has become more important rather than find a viable solution to the whole ordeal.

It is indeed a pitiful sight to see such endless bickering from a part of the world leaders which was formed to resolve issues. As it stands now, they have all been criticized and nothing seems to be definite until everyone has gathered and put their heads together to resolve the ecological issues such as the climate changes and pollution that Canada has been suffering from today.

Canada Climate Change 2007 G8 Meeting

Where do Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, and Yale Stand in Green Pledge Commitment?

The richest universities in the nation, are nowhere to be found on the “American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment” pledge, an initiative started to empower and encourage universities and colleges nationwide to make a commitment to go carbon neutral.

To date, 284 colleges have signed the pledge, and many are making short-term plans to get their campuses green, while the long-term plans are ironed out and put into effect. One of the leaders of the campaign, Arizona State University President Micheal Crow, states “global warming is a defining challenge of our time,” and that “colleges and universities must lead the effort to reverse global warming for the health and well-being of current and future generations.”

Why aren’t the most famous and most powerful higher education institutions on the list?
When will they join and make the pledge?
Who will be the first?

No Gas Required with the Miles ZX40

Miles Automotive Group is behind this electric wonder, named The Miles ZX40. This zero emission all electric vehicle is a low speed vehicle and is being marketed to “townships, military bases, ports and research institutions” as alternative use vehicles.

The Miles ZX40 reaches speeds of 25 mph and a range of 40 miles. The retail price for this vehicle is around the $14,500 mark. I think it is really cute, it is slow, but improvements and upgrades are on the way from this chinese electric vehicle manufacturer.

Miles Automotive has partnered with college campuses nationwide and is bringing the message of zero emissions through its no gas required campaign.

With cars this cute and mostly inexpensive, electric vehicles will turn into mainstream rides sooner than we think.

Yahoo Green, in conjunction with Sustain Lane, have aggregated data from various agencies and the cities themselves to come up with a list of the Top 10 Sustainable Cities in America. My hometown Chicago (and the prettiest city on earth) is number 4 on the list. Yippee.

Top 10 Sustainable Cities are:

Portland, OR
San Francisco
Seattle
Chicago
Oakland
New York City
Boston
Philadelphia
Denver
Minneapolis

This ranking is based on the following criteria, “how the largest 50 cities compared across areas such as renewable energy and alternative fuels use, green buildings, local food, public transportation use and walkability, housing affordability and natural disaster risk, along with overall sustainability planning and management“.

Paul Hawken, who wrote a book entitled, “How Green is Your City”, had this to say in reference to why he wrote his book, “while international action is required to prevent global climatic catastrophe, cities must lead the way in creating a post-carbon environment where people can thrive.”

The Top 10 Sustainable Cities in America

Lightning Motors Designing a Solar-Powered Motorcycle

Lightning Motors, a motorcycle design and production company, are currently in the process of designing and building a motorcycle prototype that will run on the energy of the sun.

The bike will run on electricity that comes from solar energy. They want the bike to be ‘zero-emissions’ since they recognize that an electric motorcycle may not be an environmentally friendly as it appears — it depends on where it is plugged in. By enabling a plug-in to a solar panel, they eliminate their emissions!

The biggest obstacle Lightning Motors is currently facing is developing a battery that is long-lasting enough that its life-span validates the expensive solar panel installation. Right now they have a battery that is good for 3,000 charges — that is, it’s good for 10 years for the daily commuter — but want it to be even more efficient before they put an such an ambitious product on the market.

I think it is great that Lightning Motors is trying to get this right and want to produce a product that would be meaningful and beneficial — both environmentally and economically– for consumers.

Zero Emissions is the goal set by, Campus Climate Challange, an initiative started by Billy Parish, 25 years old, and so far this organization along with Billy have convinced 177 college presidents to adopt the challenge for their schools and students. This is impressive considering that the initiative started less than a year ago.
