The Solar “Shelf” For Cars

This concept seems to be one of those usual car shades placed at the spoiler part of the car. But they are really solar powered “shelves” as Leon Zhu of China would call it, serving as a shade for the car when not in use. When fully charged, this device helps power in-car electronic systems such as the air-conditioning system and other electronic-related devices. It is foldable and hopefully fastened because if not, it may eventually expand and pose as a hazard for other nearby cars or worse, get lost just like a piece of paper without something to bind them together.

These may look like some sort of medication, but it is in fact an emergency LED light. Simply using solar power to charge up and just a twist of the top to turn it on, this simple application could have many uses.

The only problem is the size, they are small that they will easily fit into the palm of the user hand; they do come with a docking station that keeps them safe when not in use. It has to be said that the idea is good, but as for applications, we shall have to wait and see.

Road stubs have been traditionally been made from glass beads set into a rubber casing, these are often damaged and do not the job anymore which is potentially dangerous. Which is why solar power and LED lights could quite easily take their place at some point, provided that the technology and cost can be partnered correctly?

One such application by a company known as Luna Road has already managed to produce a system that uses solar power to charge up the light. It takes around eight hours of daylight to produce enough power for twelve hours. Because these are lights rather than reflectors, the safety of road users is increased.

This is great idea for those place where fresh and clean water is in limited supply, simply because it looks like a standard water container, but once filled with ten litres of water the sun does the rest of the work for you.

There is an indicator which shows a red or green face, green is good and when the indicator is on green there the water inside is ready to drink, this process will take anything between three and four hours depending on how contaminated the water is.

Iran Gets Its First Solar Power Plant

This is a turn up for the books, it seems that while everyone’s backs were turned Iran have been building a serious solar power plant, which use the CSP process, and this is where a parabolic mirror is positioned so that the maximum reflection is pointed towards a tube of water.

This creates steam, which will go on to turn turbines; it is these that generate the electricity. This process has been used in other countries such as Spain, where the climate permits such a system, as this can only work in hot countries with little cloud. These plants however can produce around 20 Mw of power.

Iran Gets Its First Solar Power Plant

The problem with solar power is that it requires huge amounts of space in order to spread out far enough to produce the power required to make it worthwhile. In China, they do not have these problems, as they are able to pick out favourable sites and develop them with none of the hassle that comes with developments in the west.

The China Technology Development Group Corp and their partners the private company Qinghai New Energy Group have found the right location in the Qaidam Basin where a 30 Mw solar power plant will be built, but this is going to be expanded to 1 Gw of power production in the future.

Unveiled at the Eco Products 2008 Fair in Tokyo, Japan is the future of street lighting. These units have been designed and produced by the Sanyo Corporation, to cut back on the cost in both money and carbon footprints of a simple street light.

Around the world authorities are switching off street lights in some areas, simply because of the cost it takes to keep them alight at night, this solution could be what they are looking for as they use LED bulbs, which will ensure that the power used is kept to a minimum.

When it is sunny a lot of people like to wear sunglasses, these has been seen to be a good source of solar power because most people only wear them when it is sunny. So this design is not only a great way of protecting the eyes, it is also a good way of charging up some gadgets.

They work like this, solar cells have been placed inside the glasses, and these produce power from the sun’s rays, which is directed into your gadgets such as phone or Mp3 player by a jack that runs out of the arm of the sunglasses. How effective these are in charging up a gadget is another matter though.

Vatican Goes For Solar Power

There is one thing that used to be said about the Vatican is that it is set in its ways and those ways go back for hundreds of years, yet recently they have changed for the better. One of the latest additions to the Vatican is five thousand square feet worth of solar panels.

This installation contains two thousand four hundred photovoltaic solar panels costing an estimated $1.6 million. The system will produce around 300 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy in a year, this is enough to power the Nervi Hall and when this is not in use the power simple goes into the Vatican power grid.

Everyone takes a trip via the sea at times and yachts have been known to be powered via the usual fuel engines that are contributing towards carbon emissions everyone is talking about as well. While many boats can turn to the usual natural wind power to navigate by sea, Solar Sailor has unveiled its solar powered contraptions that can help not only bring down carbon emissions but reduce the fuel consumption of sea lovers today.

Solar Sailor believe that by using solar and wind energy power, the fuel costs for yachts can be significantly lowered. They claim that it can be applied to a wide variety of marine vessels. They report that they currently have orders from ferry operators in Hong Kong and Shanghai, while the COSCO Shipping Group has taken the lead in researching energy savings and emission reductions by launching a research program exploring the use of Solarsailor’s technology on their fleets.

We have seen a lot of chargers come out, mostly solar powered ones. We have a lot of other chargers being shown as well, some power generated with the use of from manual means like pedal power. So how about recharging through the use of a vise grip?

It does seem like an awkward looking charger but you can look at it as a form of stress relief as well other than firming your grip while you are at it.

Solekshaw Hits Eco-friendly and Employment Needs

Hitting two birds with one invention is perhaps what best generalizes New Delhi’s new brainchild. The Solekshaw, a solar-electric rickshaw designed for eco-friendly urban transport and likewise provide decent employment for the masses is definitely a project that will get the thumbs up.

Pollution in New Delhi is apparently increasing just like in most capitals of the world and turning to the eco-friendly Solekshaw is bound to help address the problem. Also, the unemployment rate is bound to dwindle as these new urban transport ideas are expected to be a hit.

According to its makers, the cost-effectiveness of Soleckshaw has been engineered by making the best of the most appropriate commercially available components. This also minimises the capital requirement for a mass manufacturing unit. Only the sub-assemblies like the differential drive, the hub motor with regenerative feature and the light weight solar panel need to be manufactured separately.

Solekshaw Hits Eco-friendly and Employment Needs

Pedal Power with the Cycle Sol

It has been reported in most parts of the world that pedal power is the new alternative way to get to places. However, there are some people who may not be able to appreciate the leg power that modern bikes provide but this new solar powered bike called the Cycle Sol can perhaps fix all of that.

The Cycle Sol is in the concept stage but Mr Miljevic hopes to be able to mass-produce it once he has found a manufacturer.

He said: “It is just like an electric bike but the motor runs on a battery powered by solar energy. You can leave it outside the office during the day to top up the rechargeable, ready for the ride home. These days solar cells are pretty good at picking up the lowest amount of light so it should still work when the skies are cloudy.

“The handlebars are positioned on either side of the seat so you can lean back for a comfortable ride.”

With this new invention, pedal power has surely been given an added boost. Now we will not have to worry about making excuses since it is designed for people in all states or physical defects that they may have.

Pedal Power with the Cycle Sol

To help minimize the waste problems as far as using batteries are concerned, rechargeable batteries are being offered in the market as a great alternative. Now while that may have resolved one issue, the manner of recharging may be another issue. Energy is a growing concern and the manner of recharging or plugging them into outlets is sure to be a problem.

But for the GPS solar charger, this issue should be resolved as well.

GP Solar Charger

According to GP, it takes almost six hours to recharge two AA batteries (or 2 hours for AAA cells) under direct sunlight, which is slightly longer than what is usually expected of regular AC battery chargers. The advantage, however, is that the Solar Charger can be used outdoors where there is no access to the mains. Of course, with solar power being a free renewable source of energy, the Solar Charger also makes more economic and eco-friendly sense, too.

Yesterday while with a friend, i spotted a solar powered outdoor shower, which will allow for wash offs after some pool laps, or just for variety sake.

Sometimes when the weather reaches 95 plus degrees, an outdoor shower (a private one, of course) is quite refreshing. Actually i’m now reminiscing of the outdoor shower scene in the movie Sex and The City, where Samantha’s hot Italian neighbor is cooling off in his terrace deck. Nice!
