NonProfits: Looking For A Community Garden Grant?

Just read about the community garden grant on Twitter (from @MichaelNatkin) for US based nonprofits.

The GardenBurger sponsored community garden grant was created to encourage healthy eating and to support community gardening.

Community gardening can range from creating a small school garden to adopting an abandoned plot of land and turning it into something useful and beautiful. Neighborhood associations, schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs – as long as your activities are garden-related, you’re encouraged to apply.

The grant amount nonprofits can apply for starts at $1,000 and goes up to a max of $10,000. So a nice chunk of change can be had by applying. Just imagine the plentiful garden or neighborhood veggie oasis that your org can create with this grant money.

Your org or association has to be a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit to be eligible, you must be a US citizen, 21 years or older, and the deadline to submit your application is May 15, 2009.

Not much attention is given to the average coaster; it just sits there on the table or counter doing its job of stopping stains from appearing on the surface.

Normally these would be made from plastic, paper or card, but not eco friendly at all. Therefore, it is a good sign when designers actually spent some time thinking about the problem and doing something about it. So now, coasters can be eco friendly as well as being smart too.

A while ago, I wrote about why we should not buy jewellery produced under difficult circumstances such as conflict diamonds and gold that comes from dubious origins. I thought it was about time that we found some wedding jewellery that is eco friendly and safe to buy.

My Green Carat had the same concerns and so in order to provide eco friendly wedding jewellery; they use only recycled materials in their work and produce some really nice and unusual designs and styles. They will even produce a wedding ring or any other piece of jewellery from materials, which have been donated by the consumer; it is a nice way of having old jewellery made in something wonderful.

Well for around eighty four per cent of the UK public this was an impossible challenge as they could not tell the expensive bottled water to that which came out of the tap!

With three billion empty bottles heading for the land fill every year in the UK alone, isn’t it time that something was done about it? On the latest issue of the Small Business Edition of Business Week, a series of entreprenuers were profiled known as antipreneurs.

These small business owners are anti-big and anti-TRADITIONAL advertisting. They aim to make a profit as any other business, just not at any cost. They value their customers, they value where they operate, and they value most of all, being socially responsible.

One of the businesses showcased is vegan shoe shop, Moo Shoes. They are small, women owned, based in New York, and market cruelty-free products (vegan shoes). Below is what they have to say about how they present their product.

Antipreneurs do pay careful attention to how their products are presented. Moo Shoes, a $1.2 million New York vegan shoe store with five employees, has made its shop a community hub for information about the vegan lifestyle and about animal cruelty. This spring, Moo Shoes hosted Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a national agency for stray and abused pets. Best Friends set up pens and cages in the store with about 20 homeless dogs and cats. Customers learned about the agency and the strays, and two cats were placed in city homes. “We care about animals, and getting animals homes is important to us, though not directly related to the shoes,” says Moo Shoes co-founder Sara Kubersky.

Moo Shoes have been written about here on Keetsa a gazilllion times, i love their stylish and funky designs. I love this type of company, those who successfully mix profit with compassion. Moo Shoes also tends to support smaller artists, as they give the sustainable shoemakers a venue to market their wares. In turn they too are able to meet the demand of animal lovers who prefer not wear leather and other animal-based materials.

How do they get the word out?

Moo Shoes places ads in vegetarian magazines (e.g. Vegetarian Times) and other non traditional media. As you can imagine they go where there customers tend to be located. They support animal organizations and preach the gospel of cruelty-free living.

They are well known (and respected) in the the community in which they serve, this is how they get the word out, and how they stay relevant.

Hi, guys i have found a series of eco friendly futon covers from a loyal reader of our blogs, his name is Matt. I like to call him Futon Matt. He specializes in all sorts of futon mattresses and has been in the futon business for over 7 years. That’s alot of time to be around any one thing. LOL.

Nike has a line of eco friendly footwear and apparel that are made with recycled materials and are locally sourced. The name of the line is Nike Considered.

This is an attempt by Nike to green-up and become more sustainable, one beef i have with this green line, is you have to climb mountains to find it on their website. Nowhere is it prominently displayed or brought attention to. I only found the line through their search feature. I would think the eco line would be front and center.

But in any case, i found this great canvas messenger bag, that is really cute and is made to be sturdy enough for books and has a nice rugged feel to it. The eco friendly messenger bag is created out of canvas and rubber-coated linen, comes in an olive/tan/canvas color and retails for less than $105.

do you NOT want to set yourself apart from the competition? sure, when you go green you are saying so many things, you are saying hey, i care about the planet, hey, i care for the future sustainability of my business and hey, i care about the growing demand for eco friendly products and practices
what eco friendly materials can i start using? from fsc certified wood for furniture shops to sustainable fibers for clothing retailers such as bamboo, hemp, canvas, organic cotton there are a number of different ways to add some green in your business

BioJet Makes History as First 100% Biodiesel Flight

In Reno, NV the first flight powered by 100% biodiesel took place two weeks ago with the Bio Jet.

The Bio Jet is the creation of Green Flight International and although it has flown in the past with a mixture of jet fuel and biodiesel, last week was the first time, that it flew with only biodiesel. The plane is a L-29 military aircraft and this is what the founders of Green Flight International had to say in response to their concept:

“Out of concern for our global environment, Green Flight International was conceived by Douglas Rodante in April 2006 to serve as a platform for future development in the use of environmentally-friendly fuels in aviation and elsewhere. “It is imperative that the global community take immediate steps to reduce our carbon footprint, because we can no longer afford to wait while our environment continues to degrade.” said Rodante. “By implementing even a small amount of bio-degradable fuel in our transportation system we can significantly reduce the CO2 (greenhouse gasses) and NOx (the precursor to smog) that contribute to global warming.”
