I love marketing and I especially appreciate a good marketing gimmick, but how far is too far?

Case in point – the new 4lb (4,800 calorie) burger at the Fifth Third Ballpark in West Michigan. I’m sure this is just a ploy to get people in the park, but do you have to serve up a side of heart attack with your marketing? This is nuts.

What is in the 4lb burger? See below.

2 buns
5 beef patties (yes 5)
1 cup of chili
5 slices of cheese
salsa
nacho cheese
fritos (why? – god why?)
lettuce
tomatoes
sour cream
and of course, the 4,800 calories

But that’s not the interesting part. PETA has done some math and come up with the environmental impact of this monstrous sandwich.

To create just ONE of these heart attack babies – it requires:

27 pounds of grain
4,000 gallons of water

That is insane – I mean just think about it for a sec. 4,000 gallons of water for one sandwich.

Just say no to this dumb marketing ploy or better yet, send a letter to Fifth Third Ballpark in West Michigan – and let them know just how terribly wasteful this is.

The internet (and the IT monster) behind it consumes energy just like everything else. In fact it consumes quite abit of energy, to the tune of about 1.5% of US electricity usage annually. More than the aviation industry.

But have no fear as there are things you can do to lessen your blogs carbon footprint. Below are a few ideas to get you going.

1. Blog Hosting – Your blog is hosted on a server and these servers use up energy daily. You can however opt to host your blog with an eco friendly host. What makes a hosting company green? In the way it manages its servers and how it conducts business. Some of the more notable green web host providers include Dreamhost, ThinkHost, and Aiso. How do they compare? A few months ago, we did a comparison of the top 7 green webhosts, have a look at the pros and cons of each.

2. Measure Your Blogs Carbon Footprint -A neat service in the form of software now exists that keeps track of the emissions spewed out from any site or blog. This software is called C02 Stats and its purpose is to certify your blog as energy efficient.

Websites are provided by servers and are viewed by clients (visitors’ computers) that are connected via networks. These servers, clients and networks all require electricity in order to run, electricity that is largely generated by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. When fossil fuels are burned, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, which contribute to climate change.

Essentially you add a line of code to your blog (in the form of a badge) and this is how the software does its magic. The rest is done behind the scenes. Visitors to your blog get visual proof on how your blog is doing in the green department and showcases how much C02 you have saved. Pretty cool, but the service is not free, there is a small monthly rate.

Another neat thing C02Stats does is make sure your blog runs and loads fast, as this conserves server bandwidth and makes for a more overall energy efficient site.

Most people who are looking to be eco friendly really dislike junk mail, not because it is an intrusion into your home, it is because of the one hundred million trees that are cut down every year jsut to fuel the paper hungry junk mail machine.

One mail carrier from North Carolina has just been fined $3,000 and made to do five hundred hours of community service, because he did not deliver any junk mail on his round for seven years. Unfortunately, we all do not have these eco friendly mail carriers, so you will have to it yourself, contact the Do Not Mail list for the US or in the UK, there is always the Stop Junk Mail campaign.

The golf course is not brand new; in fact, the golf course was in some trouble before Justin stepped in and saved it. Once completed it is expected to be granted Platinum LEED certified green course standard, the first of its kind in the USA.

Big box retailer Walmart, has announced in a recent press release, that they are going to start using more local farmers for produce needs.

Walmart is a massive corp, and as such, has killed any and every local business it sits next to. However, in recent times, they have set up a number of environmentally friendly initiatives, including this most locally minded project.

The use of local farmers for produce would create a stream of revenue for small mom and pop farming operations, and boost local economies. Not to mention provide a significant savings boost for the box discount retailer, in shipping costs. And customers stand to benefit as well, with fresher locally grown produce. Fresh tomatoes anyone?

Walmart has a long way to go before it is considered a beacon or poster child of sustainability, but it is moving towards that likeness.

Whether you run a restaurant or a dry cleaner, there are things you can do to lower your carbon footprint. It all starts by taking an assessment of your enterprise and looking around at your various departments. You can do a complete overhaul, or you can start small and build from there.

Educate yourself on green issues and research possible solutions and providers. When you go green it imparts a message of sustainability that will grab the interest of todays savvy consumers. It isn’t enough anymore to recycle and call yourself eco friendly. It will take more than that, but keep in mind it should not turn into a competition of who is greener. The mission of becoming more socially aware and responsible should more or less align with your overall company goals and mission.

Let’s take a look below at 4 Random Ideas To Green Your Business.

The 3 R’s (Recycle Reduce Reuse) – What are you recycling? Are there more things that can be recycled at your company? PC equipment is a big e-waste issue today as most landfills are brimming with discarded computer units, monitors, printers, scanners, etc. It may be costly to find a proper solution and provider, but you will reap rewards when you let your current and prospective customers know, that you are different and you care enough about our planet to discard properly and safeguard our future.

The ink for my small home office printer brand new costs about $25, but to refill at Cartridge World, it sets me back all of $13.

Use Energy Efficient Products – More and more major manufacturers are creating energy efficient products. Look for the EPA’s label titled “Energy Star” which certifies the item as meeting standards for energy efficiency.

Enlist a Consultant – If your wanting to go big, and perform a complete overhaul of your operations, your best bet is to seek the services of a consultant. Find an architect or interior designer that specialize in green design and/ or green renovation. If you’re wanting to green the outdoors part of your company, seek the services of a professional eco friendly landscaper.

The most ironic thing is that I started watching Carter’s shows on HGTV about a month before this show aired. That show is awesome and Carter uses everything eco-friendly and green to rebuild your kitchen, backyard, etc…etc… My favorite is the backyard make-up for that basketball coach.

Have you heard of Zipcar? Zipcar is the worlds largest car sharing and car club provider.

Car sharing is bringing about significant green benefits, including:

Less Cars on The Road - as many car sharers end up ditching their cars
An Increase in Alternate Modes of Transportation – car sharers tend to bike, walk, and use public transit more

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

The process involves registering for a driving plan (monthly commitment or pay-as-you-go), chossing a car, and paying the car sharing fee. A variety of different car models are available, including Hybrids.

I found a neat set of bags that make it easy to recycle paper, bottles, and cans. The Colored Coded Bags, come in sets of three, one for each of type of recyclable.

Forget about throwing all your recycled items together in one big sack and later having to sort it all out. That is so 2005.

The Color Coded Bags are also an excellent way of getting your kids involved in the household recycling efforts, as the bags come with small illustrations. The bags are machine washable, come with handles, and are collapsible for easy tranport.

Worlds Cheapest Car Tata Nano – 50 MPG, TOO

At The 9th Annual Auto Expo in India, the worlds cheapest car was revealed. The Tata Nano will sell for $2,500 US dollars.

The Tata Nano will be sold only initially in India, then Latin Ameria, Asia, and other developing nations. This is so cool and although many environmentalists are up in arms about it, i think in the USA it would be a great boon. The argument is that in India most people now use bikes and or scooters to get around, so with this very low priced car, many people will now go out and get a car, which is great for them, but bad for the air and pollution levels in India.

The Tata Nano is a very basic mode of transportation, it does not come with a radio, power steering, passenger side mirror, or A/C, and features only one wiper blade. Yes, there will be deluxe models which will feature more than the entry level model. Also the car sports a very small 2 cylinder engine, but packs a fuel-efficient 50 MPG.

The car as far looks and design is similar as “the bug”, the VW beetle, with some subtle differences. I like it. But dont go looking for it at your local dealer, the car wont be available in the states for atleast some years.

U.S. Bans Incandescent Light Bulbs

President George Bush recently signed into law, the banning of incandescent lightbulbs.

The energy-friendly LED, Halogen, and CFL, are what they are to be replaced with. These are pricier (by a few dollars) but they also last much much longer and they will also save you moola in annual energy bills.

The incandescent lightbulbs are to be phased out over the next 10 to 12 years and no longer to be used. A tall task since Americans have been using the incandescents for over 125 years. But very doable.

I have found some inexpensive CFL’s at my local Walmart, they go for about $10 for a pack of 2 or 3. Their wattage is set up a bit differently too, a 13 watt CFL equals the same ouput as a traditional 60 watt incandescent. So look for the 13 watt packages.

The use of artificial Christmas trees may be taking in quite a number of criticisms but on the other side of the equation, it is doing the live trees a big favor. We are all aware that tradition calls for most people to chop down authentic pine trees each year as a symbol of celebrating Christmas the right way. However, outside the usual problems people have to consider such as cleaning and one time use only, artificial trees have become economical and also saviors to the deforestation problems we often hear of.

So the next time around, check out both sides of a coin before placing artificial substitutes under fire. There is really more than simple business interest in turning to them. There are green alternatives that will really save the day for mother earth.

Green TV

First eco village to be built in UK

The UK’s largest house builder have been given the contract to build the UK’s first eco village, the site which is a former hospital, Hanham Hall near Bristol has been specially commissioned through the governments national regeneration agency.

The eco village is expected to be ready in around three years time, which is way ahead of the green target, set by the government to have all new homes designed and constructed to be zero carbon. There will be a biomass power plant which will provide power and heat for the 200 homes, and be able to recycle rainwater with sustainable drainage.

How super would this be? A nice reusable tree that can live on for years to come.

Originally they are around eighteen to twenty four inches in height, but if looked after correctly they can last a long and grown quite a bit each year. They come from the Rocky Mountains which well known for the pine trees that grow there.

This tree comes in a pot that is covered with a sack and ribbon.

Deforestation is something critical when one thinks of the dilapidating number of trees that help protect our environment. We are now in an age where we have to make a stand and start doing wise things. Among them include trying to revive trees by simply planting them and watching them grow again.

While we all know that chopping down a tree may be a necessity, it is also our responsibility to change them into new ones. Imagine a bare tree resource site and you can see a degrading region that may also provide disasters in the process. Deforestation simply has to be stopped.

Where Do Recycled Computers Really Go?

A new article from CNN delves into the computer recycling trade, and brings up solid but sordid details. For example, some recyclers are exporting old computers to foreign countries where they simply sit in overseas landfills un-recycled. OMG!

It is important to research a prospective recycler and find out more about the operation and its recycing process? Where do the computers go? Are they refurbished? What about computers that cannot be refurbished?

Also PC manufacuters should create components that make it easier to recycle them once they are at the end of their useful life. Some major computer manufacturers such as Apple, Dell, and HP have started to implement a give-back-program where consumers can send in their old PC or drop them off at a designated center. Hopefully other PC makers will soon follow suit.

Is recycling computers a bad idea?

No, i dont think so. It is a matter of doing some research and/ or spending a few extra dollars with a premium recycler to make sure your PC or other e-waste doesn’t end up in China or Africa un-recycled after all. Also there are a variety of things you can do with your old PC besides dropping it off at a recycling center, you can donate the used PC to a computer geek, who will refurbish it, and give it to a local church, non-profit, school, or clinic, etc. For more ideas, see my other article titled, Recycle Your PC.

Have you checked out your Christmas tree to be put up soon? Well for some people, gone are the days of using fresh trees to decorate and a lot of them have turned to the reusable trees made of plastic to save on cost. While this may sound like good news for people who are wary of the deforestation problems we hear of today, it is also something that may be of concern to every household who uses them.

It is no secret that a lot of these trees have come from China. And if you missed it earlier this year, China has been in the headlines due to malpractice in ensuring the overall safety of people as far as materials are concerned.

While you are saving cost and trees, you may be endangering your lives as well. Remember that turning to fresh trees is a good practice as long as you know how to change and source for them to avoid being a contributor towards deforestation. Plastic or artificial Christmas trees are good and traditional. But it would be best to check them out beforehand so that you can be sure that they are indeed healthy and will stop ruining a great holiday season ahead.

Scientist Believe Gay Gene Exist, Proof: Lesbian Worms

Scientists have altered the brain gene of some female worms, and have managed to make them go lesbian.

This scientific research comes from the Brain Institute of the University of Utah. The director of the study, Erik Jorgensen, states that the results of this study “suggests sexual behavior is encoded in our genes”.

The study in no way defines human sexuality or its many complexities, but it is interesting.

One of the most fantastic birds in the sky could be in danger because of a US government recovery plan could be flawed.

The problem lies with oil and in fact the moving of oil and this is where the government gets involved and then so on and on it goes, all the while the habitat and the owls suffer.

There is supposed to be a recovery being put into action that is the best that science can provide, we shall see.

Are Forest Fires Too Hot To Handle?

Among the notable calamities we see today are that of forest fires which have been headlining the news. A lot of them have originated from regions such as California and Algeria. One has to wonder what ignited all of these. Was it man or nature?

For one thing, the heat wave and the drought of rains to date have become something contributory to the whole situation. The heat may be too hot to handle and some sectors are wondering how to be able to handle such blazes in time and avoid losses of homes and lives.

The situations that have been reported over the news are pretty much alarming, especially the hard to control fires that have held concerned citizens on the brink of losing their homes. Is this another freak of natural calamities or has man something to do with this again?

Well that is if we make it to the year 2036, which is the time when the 240 mile wide asteroid Apophis is due to hit the earth, or maybe not!

But fear not because a team of British scientists are on the job and they have a plan that could see the planet saved, we will know more in 2029 when the asteroid passes within 22,000 miles of the earth. The asteroid is in an orbit of the sun, in a similar way to which the earth and other planets are.

As the asteroid passes earth in 2029 it could be influenced by earths gravity, this could then make it more likely to hit earth on the 13th April 2036, so don’t make any arrangements for that day as you may be late. The impact would be the equivalent of 100,000 Hiroshima nuclear bombs all going off at the same time.

Reminds me of the movies.

Sadly, some of them do not last due to failure and disregard for their upkeep. A lot has to do with the disregard for the value of service and setting that they provide to the customers that continue to patronize them. Here are some beaches that have been forgotten and have thus become ecological failures to date.

Why Are Some Beaches Left Dirty?

Dry spells are one of the leading headlines in most countries in Asia today, owing to the fact the delay in storms and rains that have made people worried of the adequacy of their water supply. It can be noticed that some people have turned towards cloud seeding to bring in temporary rains. However, this is not enough and much of the demand for quality water depends on the number of residents located in specific regions such as the Philippines.Tropical depression storms are slowly coming in one by one. Most people dread them because they cause havoc and obvious inconvenience towards the normal ways of carrying out daily chores. But the reality is, without these supposed natural occurrences, people will find some sort of inconvenience when they have to resort to practices such as water conservation to ensure that there is enough natural resources such as water for everyone situated in a particular region.

The good thing about finally witnessing the downpours is that the dry season is over. But the question is, are the rains sufficient to answer the growing concern for adequate water supply? Countries such as the Philippines are alarmed at this development, checking out the water dam levels and noticing that they are way beyond the normal sufficient levels suitable for the local population.

While the rains are indeed here to hopefully save the day, the need for water conservations must still be enforced. There is not telling how long these rains will last. Inconvenient as they may for people who have to go through floods and clogged areas due to them, rains are not entirely for creating misery. They are here to help solve a problem to which man has also been liable for.

While this has been something that was passed on and not inherited, personal satisfaction among people who can afford to smoke at will is something that cannot be banned unless they already see the imminent danger that they have caused.

But while we all know that one stick of cigarette takes away a portion of our life, it also takes away a certain proportion of trees that are serving as our guards from floods and pollution. Et al, tobacco is a health hazard both physically and mentally. We just have to look around or read the papers. It is a critical ingredient towards destruction today.

Man is the prime culprit for the series of events that has transformed the once beautiful planet into a ticking bomb. We are all terrorists of various descents. We just have to look around and see what or who caused everything we see into what it is today.
