Organic Wine From Domaine Carneros Is Now Also Vegan

Did you know that some wines and champagne are made with animal by product? Specifically the animal by product of isinglass (derived from sturgeon bladders ), this is added in during the fermentation process because it “clarifies” the wine.

But have no fear, as some wineries have progressed and are creating their wines from other more natural methods, such as Domaine Carneros.

Domaine Carneros a premium lux brand based in the Napa Valley area of California have recently announced that their line of sparkling wines are all made with no animal by product, making it officially vegan friendly.

The variety profiled above is the Brut Rose, an organic sparkling wine perfect for the upcoming holiday celebrations. It’s also listed as a top ten on wine.com under the sparkling wine category.

Easy Spanish Style Home Fries Recipe

Looking for an easy but unique recipe for Spanish style home fries? I’ve got one for you from the VegCookingBlog.

This one calls for ingredients which are native to Spanish countries such as paprika, parsley and turmeric. This recipe will create more boldly flavored fries than the traditional home fries recipe.

Give it a good go and serve as an appetizer, a side dish or as a delicious snack all by itself. Ole!

Spanish Style Home Fries

8 medium red potatoes, quartered
1 tsp. turmeric
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. cayenne
1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 Tbsp. parsley, chopped

In a large pot, bring water to a rapid boil, add the potatoes, and boil for 10 to 15 minutes, or until just tender. Drain and place in a large mixing bowl.

•In a small bowl, combine the turmeric, paprika, cayenne, and salt. Set aside.

•Pour the olive oil over the potatoes, then the spices, and toss to coat.

•Pour the entire mixture into a pan heated to medium-high heat and pan-fry for 10 minutes, or until the skin is crisp.

Looking For Good Vegetarian Chicken Sandwiches? Here Are Ten To Start With

The good folks at the Veg Cooking Blog questioned their readers back in June for their favorite vegetarian chicken sandwich and tallied up all the entries and have complied a top ten list.

At the top of the list was Green Vegetarian Restaurant from Tempe, Arizona with their BBQ mock-meat veg sandwich. The winning sandwich is comprised of a secret BBQ sauce, caramelized onions, peppers and vegan mayo, with the entree being rounded out with your choice of thyme fries, curry pasta salad, tahini coleslaw, or fresh fruit. Yummers!

Next on the list was Govinda’s Vegetarian Restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The winner here was the Soy Chicken Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, which comes with rainbow peppers grilled in olive oil and topped with soy cheese, plus your choice of a sesame seed bun, whole wheat roll or wrap.

The Veg Cooking Blog went all over and scoured the entire country for their winning veggie chicken sandwiches, I would say their top picks are diverse and comprise a delish mix.

I would MOST love to try the Bayou Chicken Sandwich from The Veggie Grill in Southern California. The sandwich features ” veggie chicken that is lightly blackened with Cajun spices, dressed with lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, and spicy vegan mayo on a wheat bun, and served with a side of red cabbage slaw”. I’ll be sure to check it out, next time I’m in or near Cali.

This time it is PETA who has “an app for that”, and if you know anything about this agency, it will come as no surprise that the iPhone app revolves around their central cause – animals.

PETA Launches New Iphone App

John Salley In Talks To Star In Cooking Show

Ex NBA superstar and long time vegetarian John Salley has announced he is in talks to possibly star in his own cooking show on The Food Network.

John said he is also in talks with NBC for a reality tv show featuring his wife and kids ala The Cardashians and The Family Jewels, then went on to mention that he would really like to do a cooking show and is trying to get one on The Food Network.

I’m a big fan of Salley for being a vocal champion for animals and also for being a role model to up and coming athletes who want to practice the vegetarian diet. He’s been on many talk shows recently including Rachel Ray, where he whipped up his classic quacamole recipe and made it look so easy and so tasty.

We’ll keep you posted if and when he scores a TV show on either network.

Ghent Belgium To Go Vegetarian Once A Week

Interesting story coming from across the pond in Ghent, Belgium. The city announced a few days ago it will go vegetarian once a week because of environmental reasons.

They mention in a news story that civil servants, councillors along with local politicians will be the first to begin the city program, followed by school children in September. That is quite progressive, good for Ghent.

Since the UN last Summer researched and concluded that raising
livestock accounts for more than one-fifth of global gas emissions, the city of Ghent hopes that by going veggie (even if only weekly) will lessen its carbon footprint and help with a growing obesity problem.

It’s exciting to see such progress coming from such a small city as Ghent. Raising animals for food is bad for the planet, for the animals,and is terribly expensive. We salute Ghent and hope other cities nearby follow suit.

One can’t truly be green and eat meat, the two just don’t go hand in hand. Meat (or the raising of animals for meat) is one of the most destructive practices ever invented.

Animal agriculture and specifically factory farming are
vicious on Mother Earth, not to mention the animals. But since around the 1950’s Americans have been programmed not only to LOVE meat, but to think they NEED it.

We can debate the NEED for meat till the cows come home,but one can’t deny the hell on Earth animal rearing is causing on our planet. One way to combat this eco nightmare and or reduce it, is by reducing or eliminating the consumption of meat.

You can start by reducing it. Phase meat out gradually, why not start with the awesome new initiative over at the Huffington Post site titled “Meatless in May”.

As it sounds, the idea is to not eat meat for one month. One month – can you do it? Sure you can.

Start by reading up on meatless options and yes you do have options, plenty actually. Meat doesn’t have to be the center of each and every entree – think OUTSIDE the box – and you will discover an oasis of delicious, healthy, and fun meal ideas. There’s a vast and impressive array of fruits and veggies available to you right now that when prepared right, and made into imaginative dishes – will excite and delight you. You just need to give it a good ‘ole fashioned try.

Cutting out or reducing meat is as easy as 1-2-3.

Vegetarian students have it good at Wesley Chapel, a public high school in Florida. Why? Because they have top notch meatless options available when lunch time comes around.

At Wesley Chapel, if you’re a vegetarian student, you can pick from a hummus platter, veggie burger, a Red Baron cheese pizza or the newly introduced barbeque rib sandwhich. Some of the high schoolers describe the dishes as “tasty” “wonderful” and “pretty good”.

The school has done such a good job that they recently were named a “top 5 of the most vegetarian friendly schools” as declared by PETA2. Good marks given to a noteworthy effort.

Hopefully other schools will follow suit soon and achieve similar recognition.

4 Meat Alternatives For Meat Free Mondays

Have you heard about Meat Free Mondays? This is a weekly practice started up to promote healthy family eating sans meat.

There are many alternatives to meat, some include beans pasta green leafy items, and faux meat. Faux meat (a/k/a fake meat) is usually made up of several different textures including soy, black beans, and other choices. For more info on Meat Free Mondays visit their site.

1. Black Bean Burgers – These can be bought frozen or you can make your own with a can of black beans, bread crumbs and spices. This is a fantastic and nutritious meal idea for the whole family. Pair the burger with a salad and some tasty yuca fries.

2. Soy Burger Patties – Boca is perhaps the most vegetarian popular brand of soy burgers. And also the most widely available. You can probably find these in most grocers under the frozen aisles. TIP: Don’t overcook or they become hard. These are nice once a week or so.

3. Faux Chicken Sandwiches – Available from MorningStar, you can get fake soy chicken patties in place of a beef burger. As with the soy burgers, these are good with your usual side dishes.

4. Avocado Pita’s -This is another fave among vegetarians. Avocado’s are an excellent source of many vitamins, minerals and fat. But the good kind of fat. Make a sandwich with sliced or mashed up avocado’s and your fave toppings. Think tomato, lettuce, cheese, salsa, sour cream, corn, etc. Dress it up any way you like.

Essentially if you expand your menu and navigate away from the usual beef, chicken, tuna, steak recipes. You will find a world of meatless possibilities. There is gold in them there veggies, give them a try.

Cordon Vert is a cookery school launched by the Vegetarian Society and they have created a new course based on the recipes from one of Linda McCartney’s books the “Linda McCartney’s On Tour cookbook”.

Both Paul and Linda McCartney became patrons of the Vegetarian Society way back in 1995. They are pleased to state that Paul McCartney has given the thumbs for this new course that will show students how to cook Linda McCartney’s ideas like: Linda’s Tomato Soup, Wasabi Pea Fritters, Savoury Mille Feuilles, Italian Artichoke Pie with Sun Dried Tomatoes and Pine Nuts, Baby Spinach and Rocket Salad followed by Pecan, Pistachio, Dried Berry and Lemon Macaroons.

Organic Consumers Forum – This forum is an arm of the Organic Consumers Network and it is a fully featured area where eco conscious consumers can sign up and dish about all things organic, including food, safety, farm issues, and more. This is a great space for those interested in the organic diet.

Zeer -Are you wanting a review site that caters exclusively to food products? Then check out Zeer, a community of members who share rate and review all sorts of food items. From brand names to names you may not have heard of, the members on this site cover it all. Zeer was also named a top website pick by the editors of Time.

Local Harvest Forum – A fully featured and active forum from the creators of the most established farmer’s market directory. Local Harvest is a popular resource for those looking to find local farmer’s markets, and the forum is a great place to find other eco foodies. A must bookmark.

Happy Cow – I can’t write an article on eco food and not include Happy Cow. This wonderful resource is a giant database of national (and international) restaurants that serve animal friendly food. They also cover health food stores as well, not just restaurants. I wrote about them previously here. Happy Cow also has a great community section complete with forums, blogs, and member profiles. Looking for a vegetarian restaurant in Egypt? (and who isn’t) Consult the Happy Cow website. Another cool feature of this eco food community is that you can help in updating it. If you’re local health food store or eco eatery is not listed, add it. To participate, just open a free member account.

Soy Milk – This is a social network for vegans and vegetarians. Soy Milk is new but active and good discussions are taking place here, plus you gotta love that name. Built on the Ning interface, this one is very web 2.0, it sports a forum, blogs, and an area for members to add their profile.

Groovy Vegetarian – This is my site, (so a shameless plug) but the blog is welcoming of any and all eco enthusiasts. The mission behind my blog is to showcase products of interest to new and not so new vegetarians. I cover the veg diet, products, news, and everything in between. In conclusion:

I am not recommending the Food Network, because it is hard for me to believe that an entire CHANNEL dedicated to food, doesn’t have ONE vegetarian, vegan, or organic show on its roster. I mean really, with the demand at an all time high, where is our programming. It is hard to believe.

With the culinary world abuzz in organic and sustainable meat, it is refreshing to see and read about vegan chefs like Bryant Terry.

As profiled on the Earth First blog, Bryant Terry is an up and coming eco chef who thinks as much about his crafty ingredients as he does about his community.

Terry founded b-healthy! (Build Healthy Eating and Lifestyles to Help Youth) in 2002, a program created to raise awareness about food justice issues that inspires and empowers youth to get involved in creating a more just and sustainable food system. Terry’s motivation was simple: he felt like people living in poor communities, where high quality, fresh food isn’t always readily available, get the short end of the stick. Since then he has become one of the most important voices speaking out for the rights of poor communities to have access to healthy, sustainable food.

Aside from his local community work, he is a bonafide cookbook author, having one book published in 2006 and another on the way in March 2009, aptly entitled Vegan Soul Kitchen.

As if the above weren’t cool enough, Bryant Terry was recently nominated to serve as President Elect Obama’s personal White House chef. How terribly cool is that.

5. Load up on the veggies instead of meats. There are so many delicious meat-free recipes. You would be surprised and delighted to find out about the variety of tasty and nutritious veg recipes that exist especially for the holidays.
6. Set a limit on the amount per gift this year. Say $20 or $50 per gift, and no more.
7. Use as many energy efficient lights as possible for your decorating. There are numerous solar lights out now to decorate the outside of your home. Or you can try energy saving LED lights as well. Try a Google seach for “solar christmas lights” or visit Amazon.

Just read an interesting article on Media Vision on how the US Army treats vegetarians as a threat. Did you know this? I didn’t, this is news to me.

It seems that the US Army stakes out Twitter, the micro blogging platform to check on those who they consider as threats. Who do they consider as threats? See list below.

socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political enthusiasts, and hacktivists.

A report out by the US Army Intelligence states that Twitter is used by the above groups of people to carry out messages and whatnot. And that this info needs to be monitored.

As a vegetarian this information is (almost funny), didn’t know my veggie eating ways would be seen as a threat. But to who? This is ridiculous and there should be some sort of outrage.

What does this all mean? I really dont know, but hopefully someone will get to the bottom of it and shed some light.

As a vegetarian i’m always looking into different nutrition products and ingredients. Hemp is one i have heard of many times, but have only tried a few times. Well let me clarify, industrial hemp which is manufactured into food form.

Hemp (the sativa form) from what i’ve read is a plant known to have wonderful nutrient properties, as it is high in fiber, moderately high in protein, and a good source of Vitamin A and Vitamin D.

Protein – 23 grams

Fiber – 35 grams

Vitamin A – 37 IU

Vitamin D – 10 IU

There are many brands of hemp food items including Nutiva, and many uses for hemp oil and hemp seed. So am wondering the following.

Below is an awesome vegetable grill with balsamic red wine glaze recipe. Perfect for a Friday nite quick BBQ.

SERVINGS

TOTAL TIME

INGREDIENTS
2/3 cup balsamic vinegar
2/3 cup red wine
2 pounds mixed vegetables, such as tomatoes, carrots, radishes, onions, sliced or quartered
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 ounces prosciutto
1 sprig summer savory, chopped

PREPARATION
1. Make the balsamic glaze: Combine the balsamic vinegar and red wine in a medium saucepan and simmer until the liquid is reduced to 1/4 cup — about 25 minutes.

2. Grill the vegetables: Gently toss the vegetables with the olive oil. Sprinkle with the pepper and salt. Grill until lightly golden and softened. For sturdier vegetables, such as carrots and radishes — about 10 minutes; onions and beans — about 5 minutes; tomatoes — 1 1/2 minutes per side. Grill the prosciutto just until warmed. Transfer all of the grilled vegetables and prosciutto to a platter, drizzle with 2 to 3 tablespoons of the glaze, and sprinkle with the savory.

Gwyneth Paltrow Wearing (And Promoting) FUR

Ms. Paltrow who is in the uber popular Summer flick Iron Man, is a vegetarian/vegan who cares about what she puts in her mouth. But apparently doesn’t give a hoot when it comes to fashion that is cruel on animals.

Gwyneth Paltrow is sporting fur in a recent ad campaign for an Italian company called Tod’s. She has caused quite a stir with this move, and i for one don’t get it. It’s not just about the fact that she is wearing FUR, she is promoting FUR.

To me the move is totally un-progressive and is like taking 20 steps back. In a time where celebs are all shooting from the rooftops look at me, “I’m Green”. Gwyneth Paltrow is shouting, look at me, “I Don’t Care”.

On the latest issue of the Small Business Edition of Business Week, a series of entreprenuers were profiled known as antipreneurs.

These small business owners are anti-big and anti-TRADITIONAL advertisting. They aim to make a profit as any other business, just not at any cost. They value their customers, they value where they operate, and they value most of all, being socially responsible.

One of the businesses showcased is vegan shoe shop, Moo Shoes. They are small, women owned, based in New York, and market cruelty-free products (vegan shoes). Below is what they have to say about how they present their product.

Antipreneurs do pay careful attention to how their products are presented. Moo Shoes, a $1.2 million New York vegan shoe store with five employees, has made its shop a community hub for information about the vegan lifestyle and about animal cruelty. This spring, Moo Shoes hosted Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a national agency for stray and abused pets. Best Friends set up pens and cages in the store with about 20 homeless dogs and cats. Customers learned about the agency and the strays, and two cats were placed in city homes. “We care about animals, and getting animals homes is important to us, though not directly related to the shoes,” says Moo Shoes co-founder Sara Kubersky.

3. Outside of Valencia, there is a small village that holds the Tomatina Tomato Fight. Spain’s most popular festival, held each year.

Leave A Message for Oprah!

As i reported earlier this week, Oprah declared to try veganism as part of a 21 day vegan cleanse. She writes about her journey on her blog, and updates daily on the progress. She wrote yesterday that “she hit a wall”.

It can be quite an adjustment to go from eating meat all your life, to suddenly cut it out completely. Most people who go veg (or decide to try it) start slow and easy. This is the best way to stick to it for the long term. Oprah is different though, as shes has way more resources at her disposal, than do the average Joe or Jane. She does after all have a personal chef. WooHoo! Who wouldn’t want this.

This is what Oprah wrote on her blog, on being overwhelmed, and wanting to just have soda and chips :

I had done two shows, back-to-back with no break…people standing in the hallway afterward, photos, take my picture, now with my sister, now with the whole group, just one more please, please sign this, turn this way, I met you six years ago, remember? And on and on…circuit overload and no soda or bag of chips to turn to. So I just started hitting the wall in my closet.

Anywho, let’s support Oprah and send a little message her way, to stick to it. Let her know, she is influencing millions of people, and that she can do it. The Humane Society of The US, has created a cute group eCard that will be sent to her on June 9th.

Oprah To Go Vegan!

I think it was just a matter of time before the queen of Compassion, Oprah, went Vegan. I am not at all suprised to hear this news.

Oprah has always been a champion for the defenseless and innocent, so what better way to fight, than to shun the meat industry and become a plant eater. WooHoo!

Below Oprah explains her decision:

If I want to be someone with spiritual integrity, I have to think about the principles that I want to adhere to— compassion, kindness, mercy and the alleviating of suffering when I see it.…I thought, ‘If I want to further myself on my spiritual path, as well as my health path, I need to have more integrity. I need to be conscious about it.

Oprah To Go Vegan!

The Dr Scholls brand is known the world over for creating comfortable shoes, and now they will be known for eco friendly footwear as well. They have recently come out with Renew, a green sandal.

What makes the groovy sandal green? It is made using sustainable wood, has a hemp canvas strap, and uses recycled metal for its buckle. This style of clog sandals usually don’t look comfortable, but surprisingly they are. I like the white strap, and overall fresh look.

The vegan hemp sandals from Dr Scholls are great for an upcoming Spring or Summer stroll. The final say, “Fun, hip, and flirty”.

One of my fave blogs is Great Green Shoes, which profiles cool eco friendly footwear. The blog is run by a blogger who has several green sites, and this one is for those with a shoe fetish, like me.

It’s no secret that one of my favorite green shoe brands is Simple and they get profiled regularly at GGS. I also cover them at my vegetarian blog, but at GGS they get covered exclusively and regularly.
