After many submissions the X Prize panel has come up with 3 finalists. Part of competition involved submitting a 2 minute video with your idea. Eco Geek reports on the 3 finalists and they are as follows:

1. Jonathan Dreher – Jonathan’s idea asks that we look at our energy consumption in great and mass detail and change our lifestyles to reflect a more Earth friendly way of life for the betterment of all. No technology is needed and everyone can participate. The energy savings will be million fold and help to decrease global warming.

If just 10% of American households reduced their consumption by 10%, he says, we would collectively save $1 billion in energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions by 8 million tons.

2. Alan Silva -Alan’s idea is based on making American homes energy independent and focusing on getting off the grid completely. He wishes for better and more high tech innovations that will facilitate this.

He goes on to describe an example home with concentrated solar panels and small wind turbines on the roof, underground flywheels to store the energy, solar tracking devices, underground heat exchangers, and the like. Alan finishes off by highlighting the financial, geopolitical and environmental benefits of going off the grid.

3. Kyle Good – Kyle’s idea revolves around completely overhauling and revolutionizing batteries. As batteries power up most modern devices, Kyle feels engineers should be focusing on making them more like super batteries that can power up everything from small devices such as mp3 players to electric cars and beyond. A super battery if you will, or as they are calling it, an ultra capacitor. A more advanced, more affordable, and more earth friendly battery.

Which reminds me of the Back To The Future movie, where i believe a ultra capacitor powered the time traveling Delorean. (i think)

This gym harnesses human power and turns it into electricity.

The Green Gym located in Northeast Portland, is shooting for 100% human power to run its operations, but for now it is at 20 to 25%. Some of the exercise machines are plugged into weedwacker motors and truck alternators and when the machines are in use by the gym patrons, it juices up the gym.

This is the first human powered gym in the US, and is causing great buzz for the human powered renewable energy movement. Check out the video above for a first look at the green gym.

Solar Powered Film Fest

The Solar-Powered Film Series is the first in New York City to use the power of the sun to construct an outdoor “eco-theater” like no other. Solar One’s independent film venue integrates natural and human-made components of our urban environment creating the city’s “greenest” motion picture showcase. This free six-evening program features nightly screenings of environmental documentaries. Each night will focus on a different theme including water, energy, food, waste and more.

The solar powered film fest will be in New York and will take place this week from August 21st to August 23rd, with environmental films showing at 7:30pm. The film line up can be seen on the Green Edge NYC website, which also is the film festival host.

They are terrors of the deep but once man has his way of drugging and hunting them down, their entire clan may just be insufficient for anyone to see at some point in time.

Sharks being tagged as dangerous sea mammal should not be a reason for man to drug them. It is simply something where both must learn to co-exist. Just like most animals that are slowly becoming extinct, we may yet soon see sharks following the same plight as well.
