At long last someone has found a use for those old computer casings which seem to end up everywhere around the world apart from recycling plants, until now that is.

Macadamia nut farmer Rex Harris from Australia spends a lot of his precious spare time turning the case of an Apple Macintosh into a nice home for tropical birds and they do not seem to mind at all. He does have an alternative motive because the birds actually keep insects from destroying his crops. Therefore, he is developing a perfect eco partnership on his land.

The eco friendly actor Woody Harrelson cannot wait for the next break that he gets between filming as he plans to spend forty days on a remote island. But it will not just be the loneliness that will get to him, for he will only drink water and eat nothing for the whole period that he is there.

The idea behind it is to see how the brain is affected by lack of food etc. But it may not be as difficult for him as it might be for other Hollywood types as he already lives off the grid on the Hawaiian Island of Maui with is wife and three children.

They have no mains power and no shops just down the road either, so he might enjoy the experience, perhaps Tom Hanks might go along too!

Australian Zoo to Preserve Eco-Friendly Purpose

Australia is home to a lot of things that surround the aspect of eco-friendliness and one of the notable landmarks has got to be the Australian Zoo which was founded by the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. While the zoo is now being managed by his wife, Terri Irwin, the Australian Zoo has been the center of a lot of controversy the latest of which is to transform the wildlife conservation zoo into a theme park.

Hence, as far as conservation of the wildlife is concerned, the word of Terri Irwin should be good enough (for now) that the Zoo will remain in operation and to continue to preserve the wildlife even if continuous issues persist.

“There have been so many rumours about so many things and I have no idea where they all come from but I can assure everyone that the conservation work that we’re doing in Australia will continue and will certainly have a global impact but we’re not leaving and we love Australia and everybody here.”

Australian Zoo to Preserve Eco-Friendly Purpose

The development of a new eco friendly surf board is not an easy thing to start off on, but the people over at 21 Imagine Surf shop are finding that there is demand for this type of product and are in the process of the getting their first one finished.

They will be using a bamboo fabric instead of the normal fibreglass, and 100% recyclable polystyrene is used in the middle instead of polyurethane. It is probably going to be ready for the end of 2008.

Pope to lead youth festival

Around 300,000 young Roman Catholics will be at the festival in Loreto, which is one of the most famous shrines in Italy. And is part of a series of festivals that will take place as a run up to the world, youth day, which is to held in Sydney Australia.

The youth festival will see the all the participants using recycled books, bridgeable plates and back packs made from reused nylon.

The festival actually coincides with the Save Creation Day, which is where each visitor will be given a eco friendly gift set in a ruck sack which contains hand powered battery charger, three set of bridgeable plates and the obligatory three bags for recycling trash and anything else they can think of.

This is a good move by the church, shows that they care about the world.

Global warming may be coming back with a vengeance, as it appears that because plants do not drink so much water, means that the rain water and other sources such as under ground water stores will not be depleted as fast.

In the long term the effect of this could be very serious indeed, because if this continues the water levels will build until there is nowhere else for the water to go, this could mean more and more floods.

Marine life is a critical thing to consider when animals living in the oceans and marine life are exposed to certain pollution such as oil. Oil spills usually occur when there are overlooked aspects of oil leaks from oil tankers transporting oil.

While this is a common issue we see practically all the time, one oil spill in a certain part of the waters we see today will create a lot of problems. Just look at the birds and the aquatic mammals that have died from this negligible act. Human beings may be up next if this continues.

Sea life is often given less attention and the common belief that there is an abundant supply of sea creatures to see has led towards people continuously disregarding the issue of available resources from marine life.

Whales, sharks, dolphins and known aquatic underworld creatures have their share of critical levels to deal with. While they may be spread all over the world, it should be remembered that humans as well are feeding on them and are also growing as each day passes.

Killing these creatures for senseless purposes is something that we should all think about once again. There may not be enough if we continue to push extinction to most of the world’s waters in the world today.

We hear it everyday, CO2 emissions, floods, dying corals, animals slowly leaning towards extinction and so on. We only act when we know that there is an issue that needs to be addressed.

Here is a compiled refresher. Global warming world issues do not cover only one aspect of the world dilemma today. It stands for the whole world from the home we live in all the way down to the inhabitants including us.

Japanese companies being the innovators that they are have come up with a gem of an innovation here. Street lights that are powered not by electricity but solar power.

The lights will charge up during the day and then come on when the sun goes down. What’s more they are also equipped with earthquake sensors, which means when they pick up a tremor they will automatically come on.

This is a great idea and will do a great job, if only the price is right, unfortunately the details of pricing etc, are unavailable at the moment.

Street lights get eco friendly

Aussie Eco-Resort Proposal is Rejected

The Tasman Council has dismissed an application to build a $12 million eco-tourism lodge at Crescent Bay in the state’s south-east.

The luxury tourist retreat was planned by James Baillie, the son-in-law of conservationist and entrepreneur Dick Smith.

The Tasman Mayor, Roger Self says the council dismissed the application four votes to three, with two councillors abstaining.

No reason was given as to why the proposal was reject. Was it too pricey? Or not green enough?

Dramatization of Climate Changes

Young film makers worldwide are being asked by Listen Up to enter into the Beyond Green International Film Project.

Filmmakers should be aged between 13 and 19 year of age, and are asked to produce a short personal story on their physical, cultural and social environments. There will be two questions asked of the young producers.

How do you and people in your community interact with the environment?

Is there a better way?

Those who are selected will be eligible for a $10,000 grant to go towards production.

The deadline has been extended to the 13th July 2007.

Half the World to Be Cities by 2030

The New York Times has a really interesting article on its website today. A recent study by the UN suggests that by 2030 over half the world’s population will live in cities.

The most rapid change is expected to occur in Asia and Africa. Also, poverty in urban areas is expected to increase drastically as city populations increase.

The United Nations says:

In Latin America, where urbanization came earlier than in other developing regions, many countries and cities ignored or fruitlessly tried to retard urban growth. “Now the levels of insecurity and violence are a product of this approach,” said Mr. Martine, a demographer and sociologist. “People have been left to fend for themselves and have created these enormous slums.”

Emily Humphreys, owner of the label, became an eco-advocate after seeing a documentary on the harmful effects of textile chemicals and dyes.

“Some dyes in fabrics can cause hormonal disruptions, skin irritations and contain cancer-causing chemicals and I thought this was phenomenal,” she said. “Some find it difficult to connect organic with fashion as they think it means the garments are edible. This isn’t the case.”

The line is really fun, flirty and cute. While Humphreys doesn’t have a website up yet, the line is currently being sold at Purely Cotton, which will open on Elizabeth Street in North Adelaide soon!

An Aussie Eco-City

Rafael Pizarro, a lecturer in Sustainable Urban Planning at the University of Sydney, and 20 students have developed a plan to turn Sydney’s White Bay in Australia into an eco-city.

ABC writes

The project, White Bay Eco-City, features mid to high-density solar districts, food and energy production areas, storm water run-off systems and a water recycling plant.

Residents of the eco-city would be able to get around on an internal public transport system consisting of a light tram grid and special roads for public GPS-guided ’stackable’ mini-cars.

For Pizarro, the two most important components to the design were transportation and food.

“Food production not only happens in a spatial district in most of the eco-city, but also on most of the rooftops of the buildings,” he said to ABC. “We have created rooftop gardens where you can plant your veggies and in this way increasing the food supply for the eco-city while knocking out the cost and environmental impact of transporting food in and out.”

To combat the transportation problem, Pizarro and his team developed stackable mini-cars that are guided by GPS.

The 80 hectare development could house 15,000-22,000 people.

While this plan may still only be in the visionary stages, it seems like an interesting and well thought out plan!
