Green Ammo For Training Ranges

A bullet is one of those things that you could never think of as being green, but the US military are going to be using eco friendly ammunition in the future. This will first take place on the training ranges as every year the military us between six and ten million training rounds. Each of these rounds contains heavy metals within the fuse and potassium perchlorate in the payload.

However, by an executive order from the President of the USA the Department of Defence will be required to purchase green ammunition to be used on the training ranges. This is one of those occasions when it seems being green is overlooked by the fact that bullets are designed to kill, but now they kill in a green way.

The singer Justin Timberlake likes to play a round of golf when he has the time, but soon he can play on his own eco friendly golf course, to be known as Miramichi Lakes.

The golf course is not brand new; in fact, the golf course was in some trouble before Justin stepped in and saved it. Once completed it is expected to be granted Platinum LEED certified green course standard, the first of its kind in the USA.

This is great thing for almost anyone who relies on their computer for a living, when everything has to be running all of the time, a power failure can really do your business some harm. But if this managed to reach the market at a reasonable price then everyone would be wanting one.

This UltraCell XX25 has been running constantly for four hundred hours because the device uses fuel cell technology it works the same as a battery, but without running down so long as there is fuel available. In this case it uses methanol and water.

The one person utility vehicle

There are a lot of these of these coming through now, but this one is pretty cool and very usable, with a top speed of eleven miles per hour, can carry a load of up to fifty pounds and will travel over thirty miles on one charge.

Although this sort looks like a child’s toy that has been converted to carry a man, and a load. This is idea for airports, malls, amusement parks, fairgrounds, schools, universities, parking garages, parking enforcement, parades etc.

Features:

People soft and safe one-piece plastic body, with integral wheel-wells, storage, and “padding” for operator comfort and safety.

Roto-molded body is color-impregnated (no painting), hi-impact strength, never dents, and is scratch resistant (scratch it, and it’s still the same color).

Body can be removed in less than 30 seconds. The batteries could be swapped-out in minutes (this could be very beneficial in rental or multi-shift operations).

Many safety features including: charger interlock (cannot be driven while plugged-in); regen braking (feel of compression braking on downhills or slowing down, and roll-away is reduced to creep speeds); downhill speed limiting; timed shutdown after 3 minutes of non-use (time programmable); low-volume reverse beeper; etc.

Driver fairly well protected from low-speed collisions, even from the rear (an important feature for parking lot duties).

Very stable. Batteries (which are located as low as possible in the vehicle) provide incredible ballast. Impossible to “wheelie” with front wheel drive. “If you get in trouble on this vehicle; you were lookin’ for it.”

Plastic battery tray designed into the body mold, and cut from what would have been scrap. Impervious to acid – protects frame from rust-through which is a common problem to all other industrial vehicles. Powder-coated frame also prolongs its life (compared to paint).

Incredible range: Pulls about 20 amps at cruising speed. Could travel over 30 miles on a charge.

U.S. Bans Incandescent Light Bulbs

President George Bush recently signed into law, the banning of incandescent lightbulbs.

The energy-friendly LED, Halogen, and CFL, are what they are to be replaced with. These are pricier (by a few dollars) but they also last much much longer and they will also save you moola in annual energy bills.

The incandescent lightbulbs are to be phased out over the next 10 to 12 years and no longer to be used. A tall task since Americans have been using the incandescents for over 125 years. But very doable.

I have found some inexpensive CFL’s at my local Walmart, they go for about $10 for a pack of 2 or 3. Their wattage is set up a bit differently too, a 13 watt CFL equals the same ouput as a traditional 60 watt incandescent. So look for the 13 watt packages.

U.S. Bans Incandescent Light Bulbs

The Rockefeller Centre Green Christmas

The latest thing in the eco friendly lighting is LED; these lights use less power and yet give off a nice bright light. And the Rockefeller Centre in New York is really going for it, with their centre piece Christmas Tree in front of the centre and ice skating park.

The Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg has been doing his green PR thing with an announcement that the tree will be using LED’s for the first time this year, in fact there will be around 30,000 of these tiny lights, but what is great the power consumption, normally they would use 3,510 kilowatt hours per day, but the LED lights use only 1,297 kilowatt hours per day, that’s quite a saving.

If you travel around the big apple you are sure to notice the little pieces of green dotted around the city, this is not some sort fungus or alien life bought but the brain child of some eco friendly street artist group that have discovered that this living graffiti has quite an impact on the city’s population.

There is a great feeling about these pieces of art, which have been placed in many different areas in Brooklyn and have covered many different shapes and sizes. Yet they appear to have very well received by the residents as they are still there and in fact in some cases there are some people who have taken them on and begun to look after them.

Manny Howard has built a small city farm in his back in the suburbs of Brooklyn; he thinks that he and his family could live on the produce for an entire month. But he does have a vegetable plot, potato beds, a hen and rabbit run, plus a “Barn” where he keeps all of the animal feed etc, all in a mere 800 sq feet!

Global warming may be coming back with a vengeance, as it appears that because plants do not drink so much water, means that the rain water and other sources such as under ground water stores will not be depleted as fast.

In the long term the effect of this could be very serious indeed, because if this continues the water levels will build until there is nowhere else for the water to go, this could mean more and more floods.

Mowing the grass goes green

Generally speaking mowing the grass is not very eco friendly, gas powered mowers are said to produced the same amount of pollution in an hour as a car would in four hours.

But there is help at hand; a new concept in grass maintenance is starting off in Austin, Texas. They use electric mowers, now normally an electric mower would not be any good, but these are charged up on the truck by solar panels, they are relatively quiet and produce no emissions.

Austin Lawn Care are using the mowers and are making an impact, some people think that the $40 average price is a little steep, when they can get it done for $25, but these days you have to make a choice.

Well if you live in California and are about to buy a new home. Because developers are now fitting solar panels to the roofs of their new homes.

This is a great way of including a nice selling point to the home, while also staying in league with the local authorities, as we all know, California is heading towards becoming the states greenest state, that’s if it has not already reached that accolade.

Developers Lennar Homes are beginning the project with 258 houses in Clovis and Reedly, the homes will be fitted with a 2.3 Kilowatt system, it would cost between $15,000 and $20,000, if it was to be installed on a normal house. However the system will save around 50% on energy bills.

Eco friendly alternative to cremations

Now being eco friendly does not mean that it finishes when you die. After all a conventional cremation uses enormous amounts of energy and can lead to some other undesirable elements being released into the atmosphere, like mercury that comes from dental fillings.

In the UK some crematoriums are limiting the amount of days that they work on, in order to cut back. So what is the alternative?

Its called Resomation and it use water instead of heat, by using a naturally occurring alkaline, the process quickly breaks the body down into a white bio ash. The body releases the amino acids, sugars and salts, until there are only some traces of bone, which is then crushed into the ash.

The estimated cost of this process is around $600.

When eco friendly goes to far

Vicki Wozniak lives near Philadelphia and has designed her 1/8 acre garden to be eco friendly; this is mainly to attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other flying creatures. This would not be hard as it is full of sunflowers, azaleas and honeysuckle, along with many other plants, sounds good! But that is not what the local authorities think.

They believe that she is failing to maintain her property and is due in court on the 28th August.

Apparently there are many people in New Jersey who believe that the eco friendly garden is a nice way to help the environment and encourage wild life, yet the local officials have been out in force checking that lawns are nice and neat, and flower beds are kept in their place. This is just a classic example of bureaucracy gone mad.

With an attitude like, you can save the world, but not in your back yard, nice!

When eco friendly goes to far

Edmonton folk festival goes greener

Traditionally folk festivals are regarded as being green, but this weekend at the Edmonton Folk Festival, the organisers intend to be going even greener and they have really great ways of doing this.

The first thing is the introduction of solar panels, these are to be set up around the main retail tent area, which will be enough to power those all important cash registers and other electrical items, this idea to produce as much solar power possible.

Also if there is one thing that all festivals have an abundance of, that is empty beer cups that just linger around for days, these are now going to be eco friendly, because they are made from cornstarch, which will decompose in only a matter of months.

Data centers growing energy consumption

It is believed that if data centers are left to grow at the rate that they are, the energy used could double over the next five years or so. This would cost billions of dollars every year, in fact it is estimated that if the consumption of power if left to grow as it is, then around ten new power plants would be needed.

The only way around this is for data centers to become greener, which is why there is an organization called Green Grid which is working to find ways of saving energy ideas for data centers.

There are many ideas, which include standards, equipment and the way local authorities can help in this matter.

There are some huge profits to be made from being green. Yet for most people being green actually costs more, like buying organic food and eco friendly clothing, most of these products do come in a little bit more expensive.

Now on the other hand there are certain businesses that are making a great bit of business out of being green.

Building services firms can remember a while back when green was never even thought about, and yet now the amount of builders getting contracts from green minded individuals and companies. This type of business has grown around 6,800 per cent since the 1970’s and even these days the figures are doubling every year.

The majority of flowers sold in the US are imported; these are grown on huge farms in South America and Asia where the use of pesticides and other chemicals are allowed. These are then flown to the states and sold in the markets and stores, but eco friendly they are not.

Where to buy organic flowers

Well don’t panic either is the theme of the day too. Apparently there is a batch of canned beans that may not have been properly protected against the Botulism Toxin, sounds scaring doesn’t it?

This particular batch has been made by US food giant Lakeside Foods Inc, who are based in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. There may have been an error somewhere along the production process of the French Cut Green Beans, which are in 14.5 ounce cans.

It would seem that somehow they have not been processed properly, and therefore have not been able to adequately eliminate the potential for the Botulism Toxin. Details below:

The affected Lakeside cut green beans are sold nationwide under the following labels: Albertson’s, Happy Harvest, Best Choice, Food Club, Bogopa, Valu Time, Hill Country Fare, HEB, Laura Lynn, Kroger, No Name, North Pride, Shop N Save, Shoppers Valu, Schnucks, Cub Foods, Dierbergs, Flavorite, IGA, Best Choice and Thrifty Maid. The specific codes (top line of can code) involved are: EAA5247, EAA5257, EAA5267, EAA5277, EAB5247, EAB5257, ECA5207, ECA5217, ECA5227, ECA5297, ECB5207, ECB5217, ECB5227, ECB5307. (Science Blog).

Don’t eat the beans!

State fair has 133 ft high wind turbine

State fairs are another event that are hardly eco friendly, can you just imagine how much power is used on the all of those rides and lights etc? Let alone all of the transporting of equipment.

So in order to provide a little bit of eco friendliness the Mid American Energy Co have built a massive 133 ft tall wind turbine at the Iowa State Fair, which apart from being a major attraction, will provide enough power for all of the rides, in fact it is believed that the whole site can be taken off of the grid.

This could a great idea for all stadiums and arenas to follow, and then there would be some significant savings in energy usage.

Farmers get funding for green changes

The La Moine River Ecosystem Partnership, have been cleaning up the local area, for instance there have been many illegal dumpsites around the watershed area.

There has been good efforts working towards protection of the river from erosion and pollution. Further more they have been working closely with the Illinois Environment Protection Agency (IEPA), in fact they have given a grant of $250,000 to the Prairie Hills recreation, conservation and development group, this is to enable cattle farmers to sign up for additional funding to help them not to use the La Moine as a water source.

The eco friendly plan is to have the cattle not use the river for water and the river banks as a food source, which will keep the river bank clear to grow, the vegetation will grow and set roots, which stops erosion and is a natural filter.

Farmers get funding for green changes

Affordable Housing Apts in Washington Go Green

Reported at NBC4 is a story on an affordable housing apartment complex in SE Washington, which recently completed an $11 million dollar renovation, of which of $30,000 of that, went into incorporating green features for the 83 federally funded units that were converted into eco-friendly dwelling units.

Some of the changes include: organic paints and primers, the use of Energy Star appliances, heavily insulated windows throughout, and the use of barrels to capture rain water for later use on the apartment complex flower beds and lawns.

Many of the residents were not happy with the unhealthy conditions they were living in, but now are happy and proud to live in a much healthier environment.

Project7ten is so cool that celebs like Cindy Crawford, John Cusak, David Duchovny, Toby McGuire, Laird Hamilton, Gabrielle Reece, and Ed Begley Jr. have all checked it out.

This new eco-home was certified LEED PLATINIUM. That’s the highest certification an architectural design can receive for its eco-friendly and energy efficient initiative.

The home was designed by Melinda Gray, founder of GRAYmatter Architecture. Although it’s currently under construction, there have been several open houses so that people can come and be impressed with how green it is.

The home includes initiatives like rainwater reclamation system and grey water recycling, locally-sourced sustainable materials, recycled content countertops and insulation, FSC-certified lumber, solar panels to power the home, and appropriate landscape to shade the home during the summer and allow light during the winter.

There will be Energy Star appliances and Kohler water-efficient fixtures. Additionally, whomever buys the home will receive an 18-month lease on a Ford Escape Hybrid.

Pepsi recently bought renewable energy credits that were worth almost two billion dollars. Without making a single change to their environmental policy, doing this single act put Pepsi on the list of EPA’s Top 25 Green Companies.

Pepsi Goes Green?

Hastings, Nebraska is America’s Greenest City!

The Nebraskan city of Hastings with a population of 25,000, won the title of “America’s Greenest City”. Hastings was one of more than 300 communities across the country competing in Yahoo’s “Be A Better Planet”, Greenest Cities in America” challenge.

The city received a grand prize of $250,000, and Mayor Matt Rossen told me the community is now planning how to best use the money.

Time Out New York (TONY). New York’s metro magazine had it’s green issue last week. It has tons of info about how New Yorkers can become more eco-friendly and eco-aware, which is great considering all the initiative their municipal government has been taking lately!

It has special features about green shopping, green design, green city spaces and more! It also talks about Live Earth, green exercise and local air pollution.

Virgin Festival Aims to Be Tree-Free

The Virgin Festival, which will feature acts like The Police & The Smashing Pumpkins, Innocent Criminals, Beastie Boys, Incubus, Amy Winehouse, Wu Tang Clan, and 311, is hoping to be a completely tree-free event.

The concert — which will be held from August 4-5 — is asking attendees to “Green it like you mean it.” This includes asking patrons to do the following:

BYOB – that’s bottle, not booze. Bring your own empty or factory sealed bottle of water, and refill it throughout the festival at the filling stations. If they do this right, it will be a huge success and save thousands of plastic bottles, as well as a huge chunk of change for the fans.

Compost – All of the food waste will be composted nearby in local farms. ( So eat up!)

Tree-free – All of the paper products will be 100% recycled paper…even the toilet paper. No virgin trees, baby. Yeah!

The event will also use renewable energy, compostable plates and utensils, and encourage mass transit!

Tickets are still available for this event. It’s $175.00 for both days, or $98.00 for just one! Or, volunteer! Sure, it’ll be a bit dirtier, but it’ll be cheaper too!

38 Non-Organic Ingredients Found in Certified Food

The Department of Agriculture has proposed 38 ingredients that could be put in “USDA organic”-labeled foods even though they are not grown organically.

For those ingredients that the Organic Consumers Association specifically is trying to have removed from the list, we have also included the group’s rationale. Well unfortunately for shoppers waiting at the Wholefoods store on Columbus Circle I anticipation of being able the buy one of the special and in great demand Annie Steinberg “I’m Not a Plastic Bag” shopping bags, as the had a stock of around 3000!

The pouring rain did not stop the fans of the bag queuing up outside for the store to open at 0800. But for anyone who got to the store for 0830 they would have been greeted by those word that are such a let down “Sorry they are Sold Out” 3000 bags in thirty minutes at $48.74 for three bags, I wonder how many of those are on eBay?

The standards above are just a few of the 15 used to measure the green status of the city.

So what the best green city according to the standards used, Portland, Oregon, with a high quality of life and a commitment to green building. And the bottom of the list? Well its Columbus, Ohio, mainly due to the high dependence on vehicles.

How green is your city?

Wal-Mart on track to cut truck fuel use by 25%

Wal-Mart’s fleet of about 7,200 semitractor-trailer trucks is already about 15 percent more fuel efficient and the company knows what changes it needs to make to meet a target of 25 percent by late next year.

The annual savings in carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, would be equal to taking 67,744 cars off the road.

“We’re real proud of where we’ve gotten to already,” said Tim Yatsko, senior vice president of transportation for Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Green organizations, like the Sierra Club, usually criticize Wal-Mart, but they are on board for this initiative.

“They are pushing beyond what the trucking industry has already decided to do. Because of their size, I think they will create economies of scale for more efficient trucks,” said Daniel Becker, director of the Sierra Club’s global warming program.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Says Mother Nature is A Political

Miami Car Dealership First Green Dealership

A Miami car dealer has broken ground on what is to be the first green dealership in country.

Chrysler dealership Tamiami Automotive Group announced plans to relocate and expand to a building that will achieve the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold certification.

Upon completion, the new 400,000-square-foot facility is to be the most environmentally friendly auto dealership in the country, with water conservation and energy management systems, and a design that relies on natural light, rather than artificial, the company said.

The new dealership will be located on 18 acres of a former Superfund site that was once home to a lumberyard.

“We are reusing land that was contaminated and revitalizing it to build an eco-friendly structure that cooperates with the environment,” said Carlos Planas, chairman of Tamiami Automotive Group. “We owe it to our children and grandchildren to do everything possible to conserve our environment. We view this as a must, and encourage others to do the same.”

Miami Car Dealership First Green Dealership

Canada’s Green Part Deputy Quits

David Chernushenko, the former deputy leader of Canada’s Green Party, stepped down from his post today. Citing “business and environmental interests”, but speculation is ripe that Chernushenko disagrees with party leader Elizabeth May’s practices and internal policies.

“I would certainly encourage here, for her own health, to try to share the load more,” Chernushenko said Monday.

“At this point, quite bluntly, this is me looking out for myself and what I want to do with my life right now,” he said. “There was a leadership race, Elizabeth May won, I didn’t. She’s leader right now, and there are so many other ways that I can be promoting the same vision I share with the Green party and many other small-g greens whether they happen to be in the Green party or not.”

May feels that the Green Party team is very strong and they will be able to withstand this blow, as well as her ailing health. May is scheduled for a hip replacement soon.

Canada’s Green Part Deputy Quits

NY Publisher Goes Green

Publishing magnate Hearst has made its new Hearst Tower a truly eco-friendly office space.

MSNBC writes

Ninety percent of its steel is recycled. It uses 26 percent less energy and 10 percent less water than a conventional office building. Sensors detect when a room is empty and automatically turn off the lights and computers.

“From the very start, we looked at this as a home renovation,” said Brian Schwagerl, who oversees sustainability initiatives as the publishing giant’s director of real estate and facilities planning.

The tower recently became the first truly green office building in NYC when it was given LEED Gold statue by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The LEED program evaluates buildings on six criteria: the sustainability of the construction site; the building’s water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality; and the project’s overall innovation and design process.
