World-Wide Knit in Public Day is June 9th!
Knitting is an awesome past-time, as well as an eco-friendly one. World Wide Knit in Public Day is a day when all knitters — from my grandma to my urban-chic cousin to my hippie self — can come together through our love of knitting by knitting in public!
W.W.K.I.P.D. was started by Danielle Landes in 2005 to bring knitters together. Even if you are along knitting at the mall or on a park bench, you can find community in the fact that there are other people out there doing the exact same thing. That’s pretty cool. And any event that promotes community without promoting consumerism gets a big thumbs up in my book.
It’s a fantastic event where a lot of knitting groups have come together to use knitting to make a public and/or political statement. Additionally, I’d much rather get an organic-wool hat and mitten set made with love from my grandma than a gift certificate to some big-box store any day. Wouldn’t you?
