A Better LED Light On The Way

by David Allen on Friday, January 30th, 2009

In the UK the sale of 100 watt light bulbs has been phased out, in fact there are none to be found in the stores, so in effect they have gone. Yet the light bulbs that are intended to take over from these power hungry lights are not popular with the UK public.

CFL light bulbs have not been received very well because of the lack of light and the fact that occasionally when they go wrong they can take out the entire fuse box with them.

The alternative is LED lamps, but these are expensive at the moment, although there is a glimmer of hope with the new gallium nitride (GaN) LED lighting technology being developed in the UK. These are expected to last for 100,000 hours and could cost as little as $3 each.

  • It is strange that the common public has not widely accepted the bulbs. I have been using them for many years now with great success. LEDs are just not bright enough for normal household use though - sadly.
