Alcatraz is Now an Eco-Paradise

by erin on Thursday, June 28th, 2007

US Parks Service is closely examining a new plan that may turn Alcatraz into an eco-friendly space. They want to make it completely sustainable and self-sufficient so that it will reduce its current environmental impact and costs of running the facility.

By 2014, authorities hope to have installed a waste reprocessing plant and a desalination plant to provide drinking water. They are also looking at means of alternative energy, including wind turbines and tidal power.

By 2009, a solar powered boat will e in full operation for visits to the heritage site.

“We want the national parks to be an exemplar of the best practices,” said Brian O’Neill, superintendent of Golden Gate Park.

“We want people to be inspired by the way we conserve water, the way we use alternative energies and green products, and how we recycle to live more sustainably.”
