Alternative fuels, what are they?

by David Allen on Saturday, May 26th, 2007

We hear an awful lot about alternative fuels, but many can only name but a few, so what exactly are the alternative fuels that we are hearing so much about?

Current Alternative fuels:

Mixtures containing 85% or more by volume of alcohol fuel, including methanol and denatured ethanol

Natural gas (compressed or liquefied)

Liquefied petroleum gas (propane)

Hydrogen

Coal-derived liquid fuels

Fuels derived from biological materials

Electricity (including electricity from solar energy)

100% Bio diesel (B100)

As you can see there are quite a few to choose from, which would make some exciting times for all at the service stations.

  • Most of these are really terrible ideas. Usable hydrogen is not found in nature and has to be made using electricity. The creation, transmission and use of that electricity is all inefficient and ends up using far more energy than is contained in what little hydrogen is created.
