Can Plastic Bags Be Art?

by David Allen on Monday, April 6th, 2009

Well ever since the great battle against plastic bags started, we have seen them turning up in some very odd places like fabrics, sculptures and even more bags. However, for a plastic bag to become art, it would need to appear to be something else. That is exactly what the Spanish art group Luzinterruptus has done when they visited the Prado in Madrid.

The Prado has been long associated with the classical work of art holding regular exhibitions of the most famous artists in the world. But recently the group created a piece of installation art named “A cloud of plastic bags visit the Prado” this artwork was made up of almost eighty plastic bags with an internal light that were inflated by the breeze.

While this is a great idea to raise awareness, I am personally getting sick of plastic bag art. The last time a plastic bag had any appeal was in the movie "American Beauty" with the ominous, wind-wafted bag carelessly filling and refilling in the crisp autumn air. Even that got old. Fast. I think we should focus on more useful ways to reuse the bags instead of making crappy art. Speaking of crap, use your extra bags to clean up after your pet. That's what I do!
