Car-Free Tour of Asia to Promote Eco-Awareness
20 people from around the world are embarking on a four-month long car free tour of Asia to promote the idea of a car-free Asia. The trek will begin on June 10th in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and finish in Paris, France. The tour will be mostly done by bicycle, but will also include other alternative means of transportation as seen fit.
This is actually the second group of eco-activists to do this trip this year. Another group started their tour in April.
“This event will draw attention to one of the most important issues today. Nothing is more important than the issue of global warming. If we don’t change the way we live, we’ll have to build a memorial hall for the life we lost,” said Canadian composer Matthew Lien, who is a big supporter of the event.
The exact route for the trip is yet unknown, however there are three front-running possibilities: the majority of participants are expected to go through China, Kyrgystan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Poland. Other participants may take a more northern route, avoiding potential visa complications in Eastern Europe and will enter Europe through Finland.
The group hopes to arrive in Paris on September 22 — which is World Car Free Day — but recognize the ambitiousness of such a date.
