Cash For Clunkers: A New Govt Bill For Fuel-Efficient Cars?
The US government is proposing a new bill that would allow those who have an old clunker to trade up for a more fuel-efficient car.
The trade-up would come in the form of a tax credit of up to $4,500 and would be funded via the Economic Stimulus package brought on by President Obama.
But the issue is who and how would a clunker be classified. I’m sure there will be a good deal of stipulations and regulations car owners will have to abide by, and the cars to pick from narrowed down to a select few.
The proposed “old clunker” bill doesn’t come cheap, it’s estimated cost is $4 billion dollars. Ouch! That’s a pricey eco improvement plan.
Surely there are better ideas that will motivate consumers to give up a gaz-guzzling vehicle for a more fuel-friendly one. And what about fuel-hungry vehicles like the Hummer, the Escalade and other large SUV’s? What incentive or program will the gov’t put in place to lessen sales of these eco monsters?
The proposed “old clunker” bill doesn’t stand a chance at achieving what it claims it will.
