The US government has decided to make August 24th the official end date for the hugely popular Cash For Clunkers program.
If you have yet to take advantage of the car rebate incentive, get into your local dealer as soon as possible and make sure the applications are turned in by the official deadline.
To qualify for the program your car must meet the following requirements.
For a passenger car or minivan:
If the new vehicle is an improvement of 4 mpg over the trade-in vehicle, the consumer is eligible for a $3,500 voucher. If the new vehicle is 10 mpg more efficient, the consumer is eligible for a $4,500 voucher.
For a light duty truck:
If the new vehicle is at least 2 mpg more fuel efficient, the consumer will qualify for a $3,500 voucher. If the fuel efficiency is at least 5 mpg higher, a $4,500 voucher will be given.
Also in addition to the above, the following guidelines apply:
- Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
- Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify
- Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements, 15mpg)
- Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured in your name continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in
- You don’t need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase
If you have an old clunker lying around you want to trade-up, better get on it as the official deadline is August 24th, 2009. You can also try the MPG calculator on the Clunkers website to determine if your car, minivan or truck qualifies for the $4,500 tax rebate.
