Get Your Business Green Certified

by Missy on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

If you’re wanting to green your business, one avenue you could take can be in the form of certification. A few local (and some national) organizations exist that will help you in greening your operations, and make sure you meet environmental standards.

One such outfit is the Bay Area Green Business Program. Through this program you make a pledge to conform to certain earth friendly metrics.

Below are some of the things you would pledge to do (or implement) to be certified as a green business in the Bay Area:

  • To comply with all applicable environmental regulations and strive to exceed compliance
  • To conserve energy, water, and other natural resources
  • To develop and implement practices that prevent pollution and waste
  • To be an environmentally responsible business within our community

Businesses that sign up with an organization (such as the BAGBP) geared towards meeting green status, signal to their customers and their community that they are an environmentally conscious company. It also sends a strong message to employees that you care about their health and well being, by instituting policies and procedures which reduce or eliminate carbon emissions, indoor air pollution, and workplace e-waste.

There is also financial assistance provided by state, city, and federal agencies to facilitate several green initiatives, such as starting a recycling program, converting your physical location into a green building, and much more.

You can start your research into certifying your business as green, by performing a search on Google Local under the term “green business certification” and the name of your city, for example, “green business certification chicago”. This should yield recent and revelant results specific to your area, within this topic.

Do provide your thoughts and ideas below.

  • I have mixed feelings on this one, if a business is just looking for a piece of paper to hang on the wall or an on-line logo then it's a little shady. As in "if we promote our business as green we might get more clients".

If a business has a real interest in becoming green or would like an outside party to look at their efforts and suggest some areas of improvement then the idea is great.
  • Hi----GHI:

The proposed purpose of organizations like the BAGBP, is to certify that ones business has met certain environmental standards. Its more than just giving green tips, its about meeting said tips.

Love your comments, keep' em coming.

  • Missy, I checked out their site before I posted and they get my thumbs up! My concern is with the business' that want to be known as a green business just to make money. It's pretty easy to tell the fakers by the amount of 9mpg H1 Hummers in the parking lots!

What happened to all of the public bike racks?
  • I agree. There are local groups that claim to have this line of certification. The problem is, most businesses want it for the sake of being lauded as green. Perhaps there could be a sort of degree of classification so that customers will not be cheated out of a "REAL" green business.
  • I've actually just started down the path of totally changing my businesses operation towards a more environmentally sensitive one. I think the governing body that is in charge of said certificate should have quantitative goals that are checked to make sure they are met and kept. I think "greenwashing" is a problem not only for consumer's but also for the companies that are doing the hard work to be better.
