Don’t Buy a New PC, Upgrade It’s Memory!

by Missy on Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

I just ran into the most fabulous green site, it completely simplifies the process of upgrading the memory on your PC. I recently purchased a used Dell laptop, and according to this site, the salesmen lied to me.

According to Crucial.com, the max memory for my DELL Latitude C600 is 512 MB. The salesmen told me i could upgrade it to a max of 1,000 MB. Shame on you, Mr. Salesmen.

What i like best about this site, is that you enter in your desktop or laptop brand and model, and it gives you detailed memory upgrade information. It’s motto is, Don’t Buy a NEW PC, Upgrade Memory Instead.

Smart, money-saving, and eco friendly, too.

  • Good point that isn't said enough. A good chunk of slowdowns with computers, especially if you play games (darn MMOs), has to do with RAM. Even SSD drives connected via the fastest interfaces out there still don't serve virtual memory anywhere near as fast as good ol' physical memory.

And don't forget, if you have to replace ram please sell your old stuff! It's amazing how many people I talk to just toss out their old memory - it's like throwing out money. I suppose those are also the same people who eat at McDonalds constantly and have TV dinners every day.
  • I don't buy new PC oftenly too...Always upgrade it until it reached the maximum performance. But my main reason was for saving...Now I know another benefit of it.
  • You can easily upgrade your pc. But before you do, you should first identify for what reason you want to upgrade a new one. Sometimes the reason may be valid and maybe you can even sell your old one to ease on the cost of buying a new one.
  • Good point, guys. The fact stands that many simply toss out or go out and purchase a new PC, as soon as it slows down.

But the reasons a PC slows down are so vast and varied. It could be a new resource heavy software you recently downloaded, a widget you added, etc.

When in doubt, go online, do abit of research, and see if maybe adding more memory ( or a hard drive ) is what would speed up your computer.

Thanxs for all the comments! Keep 'em coming.
  • Or if you want, you can do some analytics prior to deciding on getting a new one. Consider viruses and spyware as well as they can really cause a lot of problems. In short, browse wisely online ;)
  • I agree with the premise of this post, upgrading can extend the life of most PC's.
  • Bryan: Yes, viruses are major resource killers and memory wasters. Its a good idea to do a virus check. If you find that you have one, make sure to delete it, kill it, etc.

Matt: Yes, upgrading can extend the life of any desktop or laptop. It is atleast worth a try.

My question is : Is it not better to buy external hard drive to save documents and spare memory? with the advantage of having documents safe from viruses, theft, technical surprises etc.... No need of extra memory.
  • Great advice (and a useful link I'll add to my blog), but speaking as an ITiot who nonetheless believes in and uses all PCs and the all the net can offer, I often find other hardware and software issues can impose.

For instance, I am finding the RAM limit and speed on my 2-year old Mac is now at its limit for some upgrades. Storage is seldom an option any more, despite each shot on my camera running at 10MB.

And also that certain welcome software advances then clash either with my older OS, or if I do upgrade, the new one won't work with older versions.

I really think that, if PC makers and software designers are seeking to be green as well as claiming it with silly tweeks, they need to address truly backwards compatible smooth growth paths that genuinely maximise hardware/software life for those who don't need a jet fighter with all the bells and whistles.

But I can see, if not applaud, how that might not be great for some marketing models.
