Michelle Obama To Begin A White House Vegetable Garden

by Missy on Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Just read that first lady Michelle Obama aims to teach children about healthy and local eating by introducing a vegetable garden at the White House this year.

With the economy rolling the way it is it makes good sense to grow a garden and not a lawn.

Tomorrow Friday March, 20th she will cut ground and along with several students from a nearby elementary school will begin the groundwork on the White House veggie garden. They will get the soil ready, and even the President himself Barack Obama – will get down and dirty to show us how it’s done. And this isn’t some lame small garden, but a lush oasis with 55 different varieties of veggies, fruits and herbs. Wow! Cant wait to see a pic of the garden when its in full bloom.

This is pretty exciting stuff and a fantastic way to get the word out on regular everyday folks thinking about doing the same in their homes. As Spring is in full swing, now is the time to plant the seeds for a delicious Summer harvest.

I mean just imagine going outside your door, just a few steps out, to grab the freshest tastiest tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula, and other veggies or fruits such as strawberries blueberries etc.

All right there in your backyard! Nice.

This news makes my little eco-heart flutter with joy! I think it is extremely important for those in high positions with a lot of clout to set an example, especially with our economy and the rate of the earth's degradation. In general, I believe the Obamas are doing an excellent job relating to the every day person. Bending down and getting dirty in a garden? I would have liked to see Bush do that...
  • Yeah, me too. In ref to seeing Bush get down and dirty. LoL. Appreciate the comment, Allison.
