Eco-Friendly Cruise Shuttle Approved for Victoria BC
In Victoria, British Columbia, cruise passengers are getting a greener way to travel. Their city council has just approved the use of an eco-friendly shuttle for cruise passengers to get to and from tourist areas without interfering with the regular transit.
Run by former Gray Line general manager Gary Gale, Cruise Victoria plans to fuel its buses with biodiesel.
“We’re starting out at 20 per cent and we hope to be at 50 per cent by the end of the summer,” Gale said.
The shuttles were operated by Gray Line until the end of last summer. Gale left the company in October and the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority approached him over the winter looking for a new operator.
Gray Line charged cruise ship passengers $5 US or $7 Cdn last year for an all-day pass on the shuttles. Gale said the cost will be $6 in either currency this year.
Mayor Alan Lowe called for the GVHA to work with tourism and business groups “to actively promote a free bus for cruise ship passengers.”
This is another great green step for Victoria, but my new question is: when are cruises themselves going to go green?
