Food Waste In The UK

by David Allen on Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Every year the UK wastes around £10 ($15) million worth of food, and this is not through food mountains that build up until they rot away, this is down to every household in the country buying too much food or cooking too much food.

It has been estimated that the average household could save around £610 ($900) per year if only the food that they bought was quite simply eaten and not wasted, let’s face it we all do it every now and then.

There are some easy ways to make sure it is not you wasting food and cash, check dates on food in the house, keep your cupboards well stocked with tinned and dried food, when it comes to carbs – get the portions right, leftovers can make great meals and menu planning.

  • I think the best thing I did to relieve myself of all the unwanted food waste was to make a grocery list and stick to it, right down to how much of a certain item I am going to purchase (this also cut down my grocery bills too). I found that I was blindly going to the store and buying things that would then go bad because by the time I got home I didn't really want or need the thing I'd just bought.
