Ford Mustang to Have Soy-Foam Seats
Ford recently announced that the 2008 model of their Mustang will have seats made out of soy.
Ford has been working with leading researchers Lear to incorporate soy-based polyols into their foam headrests and armrests. Soyfoam is 100% renewable, uses less energy in production and produces fewer carbon emissions than traditional car foams.“Our technical team had to overcome several significant hurdles to bring this environmentally responsible technology to production,” said Gerhard Schmidt, vice president of Research & Advanced Engineering at Ford Motor Company. “We are pleased that our diligent efforts in developing this technology have resulted in the production of soy-foam for the Ford Mustang.”
Ford’s press release said that by using soy foam they can “[reduce] dependence on volatile energy markets.”
It’s a little strange that Ford is touting green seats when other car companies are making hybrid models, but I won’t knock them too harshly for this initiative!
