How green is your lawn?
Now having a “green” lawn is not the same as having a green lawn, if you know what I mean! This is what the National Gardening Association had a survey of over two thousand people to find out which of these (Below) eco friendly practices they would like to follow for the next season.
1. Water lawn and plants only when they need it: 63%.
2. Keep yard safe, clean and well-maintained to add beauty to home and neighbourhood: 56%.
3. Read and follow label directions when using pesticides and fertilizers: 49%.
4. Leave grass clippings where they fall after mowing: 44%.
5. Keep fertilizer, pesticide, and yard and pet wastes off pavement and out of water sources: 43%.
6. Apply mulch around trees, shrubs, gardens: 40%.
7. Choose and use the right plants in the right spots for the climate, sun/shade exposure, soil and rainfall: 39%.
8. Cut lawn at the highest recommended mower setting: 39%.
9. Before using pesticides on insects or weeds, make sure the problem is identified correctly along with the most appropriate method to control it: 39%.
10. Recycle yard waste by composting grass clippings, leaves and other organic materials: 31%.
11. Use only well-adapted or native plants and remove poorly adapted, exotic or invasive plants: 26%.
12. Learn more about how to best care for the lawn, specific plants, and soils: 20%.
So if you are a budding gardener what sort of green practices would you like to be using this season.
