Are you planning to move within your state in the next few weeks or months? If so and want to do so in a green and eco friendly manner – this article is for you. Taking the planet into consideration during a move can yield many benefits, not too mention maybe even earn you some financial or tax credits.
Whether you’re moving out of state or in state just a few hundred miles away the process and or products you use can make the difference between leaving quite the carbon footprint or not. There are steps you can take though to alleviate any excess and below are our tips on just how to do this.
1. Recycle The Unwanted – with any move no matter how big or small, there’s bound to be lots of bits and ends that either do not make it onto a moving truck or simply things that have lost their personal value to you. Instead of trashing these items why not recycle them instead. One good and smart way to do this is to create or have a large recycle bin or area where the items that you know are not going to make it into the moving truck can be placed for easy recycling later. The best way to do this is to create an area right from the get go which is going to be the designated recycle area and then at the end when all is taken care of, the items can be disposed of properly.
2. Re Use Wherever Possible – this idea is similar to the tips above except that it involves re using of items instead of going out and buying new. For example instead of going out and buying a series of garbage bags, boxes, tape etc why not rummage through your house and see what can be re used that you already have. You might be surprised at how many containers be it baskets, garbage cans etc can be used to carry things instead of bags. This also applies to appliances, electronics, furniture, clothing and so on.
3. Use Eco Boxes – if you need to get boxes for your move, did you know there are eco boxes you can get. These eco boxes are made from recycled carton and or other materials such as PU which is a recycled plastic. They tend to cost a bit more than traditional boxes, but they also tend to last longer. You can find these eco boxes online or at major national moving and storage places.
4. Try Green Cleaning Products – what move would be complete without a good cleaning or two. As not only do you need to clean out your old space, but your new space as well. From the kitchen to the bathrooms and bedrooms to garage – this is a lot of cleaning that has to be done. However with the new roster of eco detergents on the market, you can do so without any harsh chemicals or abrasive ingredients. One of the biggest draws to eco products is the light scent they give off. With traditional cleaners, there’s usually a strong and stoic scent that leaves your home feeling anything but cozy. However with natural and vegetable or plant based cleaners you’re new (and old place) will be much lighter in appearance and feel like a home.
As you can see there are numerous ways to green your move, whether you’re moving down the street or across state lines. Think of the many ways that something can be made more planet friendly and proceed accordingly. Have fun and happy house hunting.
