From good maintenance to using sustainable and natural cleaners; there’s a lot you can do with your existing car. See our top tips below on how to make your current ride a lean GREEN driving machine.
1. Good Maintenance -
One of the best and easiest ways to make your car more eco friendly is to maintain it well. The better you maintain your vehicle, the better your chances of having fewer problems and repairs down the line. Not too mention the better your car will operate and possibly even be more fuel efficient. What does a good maintenance schedule look like? Essentially every car is different, but if you stick with what your specific car manual recommends and get the basics such as a quarterly oil change – you should be good to go.
2. Try A Fuel Efficient App -
Did you know there are numerous apps on the market which facilitate good gas use? Apps that direct you to the best and or cheapest gas stations in your area. Apps that can even provide good data on your driving habits. We particularly like the apps that log and monitor your driving habits, which you can then analyze and make adjustments to. These apps are found online via iTunes or Android and or via a download on your phone. Try GasBuddy, Gas Guru or Fuel Log for starters.
3. Use Eco Cleaners –
Just as there are eco cleaners for your home, there are eco cleaners for your vehicle. These types of cleaners are natural and usually vegetable based as opposed to the harsh toxic chemicals found in traditional cleaners – but clean just as well. They can be found in most major stores such as Walmart, Target and or drugstore chains such as Walgreens or CVS. Look for biodegradable labels and stick with larger gallons to also save some money.
4. Car Sharing –
Another idea that has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years is car sharing. You can car share for work, for school or just about anything. When you car share you essentially cut down on the number of cars on the road, whether you’re the one others come to or you ride with someone else; basically there’s one less car on the road. Car sharing communities exist on sites like Meetup.com and or niche specific sites such as CarSharing.net – which is a good way to find others to car share with and make it double the fun. This has become just that for many co workers, who ditch their vehicles a few days a week and instead hop on the car sharing bandwagon. Fun indeed.
As you can see there are numerous ways to make your existing vehicle more earth friendly. The tips above should you get you started and give you food for thought. Feel free to share your own ideas below and or what you have done that has worked for you. Tell us below.
