Howies Apparel Goes Nuts!

by erin on Friday, June 8th, 2007

Eco-fashion label Howies made the recent announcement that they were removing plastic from their production line and instead will use Tagua nut buttons on all their clothing.

The buttons will not melt or break and are as functional and durable as traditional plastic buttons. They are made out of the Tagua nut, which is grown in South America.

Howies’ catalogue says

We know that nature already has the answers to most man-made questions, so we looked there. But finding a natural material that has similar properties to man-made buttons was pretty difficult. In the end we discovered some buttons which are made from the Tagua nut, it comes from a palm tree called Phytelephas Macrocarpa (an ivory nut palm grown in South America). The nuts are gathered and dried out for 4-8 weeks, sorted and sliced ready to be sewn onto our organic cotton jeans/trousers.

Howies already uses the buttons on some of their women’s apparel, but expect their entire fall line to come complete with these sustainable buttons!
