Is Apple Discouraging Repairs On It’s Products?

by Missy on Monday, August 3rd, 2009

There was a question posted on The Guardian the other day from a reader who wanted to know if Apple is encouraging a throw-away society.

The question came about because apparently some Apple stores are telling customers that it would be cheaper and easier to buy a new model of an iPod, than repair a defective one. This is assuming the customer is past the free 1 year warranty period provided by Apple.

It can cost almost as much to repair a defective iPod than buying a new one. This in effect means that customers are sort of encouraged even if ever so slightly to get a new model. But the real issue is what happens when consumers are advised to upgrade to NEW, versus reusing and or repairing?
