Making Green Sense with Paperless Banking

by Brian Yalung on Thursday, December 11th, 2008

We are at an age where online banking and transactions are a privilege. To many people, it is a benefit that has done away with having to go to the bank or line up for your turn in local banks. But the problem is not all people are aware or are confident about it.

Hence, the Green$ense program launched by Citizens Bank should be something that can refresh our memories on how to maximize the ease and benefits of online banking. The notable thing here is preaching a paperless environment, saving a lot of trees and lowering the growing rate of landfills and trash issues we have to deal with.

The best part of it all is that by signing up with the Green$ense program is that it allows people to earn while they are at it.

Green$ense allows customers to earn up to $120 annually for each electronic transaction they make, including debit transactions, online bill payments and recurring payments. Citizens Bank launched a campaign to promote the program last month with the tagline: “The Environment is like a bank account. Every little bit helps.”

  • Wow, that's a great program. I already handle the majority of my banking online, it would be nice to get a little back for it.

  • I wish more banks had programs like this. I do all of my banking online, but with no financial gain because of it. I still do get good feeling from saving trees though.
  • Did I read this correctly "Green$ense allows customers to earn up to $120 annually for each electronic transaction they make, including debit transactions, online bill payments and recurring payments."

We can see a program that can change the way people refer to banking.Since the Ecofriendly initiative by the gonernment alot of improvement have come in place. Thanks
  • Yes that is correct. Online banking has been around for some time and though it was not really aimed at being eco-friendly but more on making life easier for consumers, you have to admit that online banking does have some perks in the eco-friendly nature.
  • This is really a great program. More banks need to start providing incentives for going paperless since the bank save tons of money when you do so. It could really make a huge difference and save us money too :)
  • I haven't even connected the dots there, that we actually save trees by using online banking and saving on paper. I prefer it over going to the bank, it saves me time and I feel like I have all the control. But this program really comes as surprise.

It would be great to see more of them, that could change things in the long term.

Great post! I much prefer paperless. It's easier and faster online anyway. No paper needed :)

Community banks are great at offering online pay and pass the savings on to their customers. Their reward checking program and responsible loan practice has made them emerge as the more appealing alternative.

You should look into Checking Finder (https://www.checkingfinder.com/). This search tool will find community banks paying up to 7% for reward checking. Just type in your zip.
  • @Eric
Is that your website? If so, pretty cool stuff. But i typed in my hometown zip code and my local banks didn't show up. There are about 10 in the area.
  • I do 99% of my banking online.....no paper at all. But, there is no financial incentive for me doing so, its all just because it is soooo much simpler!

    @Missy
It's not my website. The reason your local banks didn't show up is probably because they don't have a website or online presence or they don't offer reward checking.
  • It is really appreciable when banks come up with such initiative to save the nature. Hope others follow the suite to get our planet greener.
