Motorola Launches Wind and Solar Powered Network
Motorola Inc has launched the world’s first wind and solar powered wireless network in Namibia.
This program is a trial run to see if running cellular phone and other wireless systems running on alternative energy is a feasible plan for other, more concentrated markets. (Like ours!)
Motorola writes
This solution provides comprehensive voice and data communications using an efficient and reliable alternative to the costly roll out of electricity in remote areas. It is an ideal solution for both emerging and developed markets, providing cost-effective, environmentally friendly power to enable wireless communications to a wider audience.
Motorola believes that Namibia’s lack of technological infrastructure, but tons of sun, environmentally conscious government and growing economy is the perfect place to launch the pilot project. MTC is partnering with the GSM Association to implement this project.
If this project succeeds, maybe I’ll finally consider getting a cell phone!
