Old Jeans Turned Into Home Insulation

by Missy on Friday, September 26th, 2008

An outfit in Wisconsin is in the midst of their annual drive to collect old jeans and turn them into insulation. Yes, the insulation that warms and protects homes.

This is the good green work of Fair Indigo, based in Wisconsin.

Need a reason to get rid of that old pair of jeans that you’re keeping around ” just in case?” Instead of filling up a landfill, turn them into something far more useful: sustainable and eco-friendly housing insulation! Our goal is to collect 500 pairs of jeans by October 31st of this year – enough insulation for a Habitat for Humanity home (help us spread the word!)

How do you participate? Pretty simple:
Gather any jeans you wish to donate (they don’t have to be ours) and mail them to us by October 31st.

For the shipping address where to send your jeans and full details, head on over to Fair Indigo.

I guess the only thing I would worry about are the soaking properties of cotton. I am not that familiar with traditional insulation, but wouldn't you want something that naturally repels water, not something that soaks it up and takes a long time to dry?

In any case, this is a very unique idea. I guess we'll see if it's durable enough to start being put into practice on construction sites worldwide....

Haha, that is a pretty awesome idea I guess, I have some old jeans that I'd happily donate!
