Did you know that some wines and champagne are made with animal by product? Specifically the animal by product of isinglass (derived from sturgeon bladders ), this is added in during the fermentation process because it “clarifies” the wine.

But have no fear, as some wineries have progressed and are creating their wines from other more natural methods, such as Domaine Carneros.

Domaine Carneros a premium lux brand based in the Napa Valley area of California have recently announced that their line of sparkling wines are all made with no animal by product, making it officially vegan friendly.

The variety profiled above is the Brut Rose, an organic sparkling wine perfect for the upcoming holiday celebrations. It’s also listed as a top ten on wine.com under the sparkling wine category.

For more information and to see the their full line of vegan wines, head on over to the Domaine Carneros website.

This all sound promising, but I am not sure you can call wine vegan. As a winemaker, most people would be horrified if they knew how many critters found their way in into the winemaking process. Unless there is someone picking out all the bugs, mice, lizards and others out of the grapes before the crush, then the vegan tag is a not quite accurate. Better sticking to 'organic' as a reliable label...

    Hi, Alan:

From my understanding eco wineries still clean and or clarify the wine just use a different method or cleaning agent, than animal by product. Atleast that is how I understand it.

Thanxs for jumping in and adding your comment.

No worries... there are a few good refining practices that do not involve animal products, but my concern was more pre-fermentation as that is when the creatures get introduced to the wine-making process. I have lived with so many vegans in the past and know how particular they can be about animal contact with their foodstuffs...
