Solar Powered Air Travel Becoming a Possibility!
“Solar Impulse” is a project led by Bertrand Piccard, a ballooning pioneer, that is dedicated to creating an airplane that can function on solar energy.
They are aiming to have a functioning prototype that can fly around the world by the year 2011, maximizing times when sunlight is readily available to use for times when it is cloudy or dark.
The team is also planning to post regular updates of their successes (and failures!) so keep your eye out for news about this project in the upcoming months.
Piccard refuses to guarantee success, but remains optimistic: “We have no idea if the virtual flight will be a success or not,” he declared. “We’re dealing with real conditions, so it may be a failure.” But he does say that this project is a good opportunity for them to learn.”
