(a) just because a product uses a piece of “renewable” material doesn't mean its “green” OR “sustainable”

(b) The “guts” of the headphones were most likely spec'd from a distributor in Asia, meaning it had to bounce around the globe being assembled.

(c) being that the inner workings of these headphones were most likely from Asia, the $ it took to create these so called green headphones displaced any possible job in the USA.

(d) Lastly, the first wheel on the tricycle of triple bottom line approaches top true sustainability is economics and these headphones do nothing to help the buyer maintain a “sustainable” balance of finances. It probably cost Thinsound around $12-18 to make a pair of these, which means they are maintaining the status quo for retail inflation and doing nothing for cooperative commerce. Even though these companies tout that they're “green” they still do nothing to evolve the old way of thinking and BOTTOM LINE approaches to business.

Rob,
I can tell you honestly that yes these headphones were made in Asia and I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I personally lived there for years. These products were developed because I personally saw how I could try to change the way products were being manufactured in Asia and around the world to lower their carbon footprint. I have worked for many companies in the past and I want to teach people that there can be sustainable manufacturing done ANYWHERE in the world. Asia itself has a lot to learn about green manufacturing and I want to be able to teach them and the rest of the word about it. It doesn't matter what country the products are made in as long as they are quality and made responsibly.

This product did not 'bounce around the globe' as you stated as I wouldn't allow that. I lived in Asian for many years and know how to make a wonderful, quality product. Most companies don't even inspect their goods coming out of their factories and I can assure you that I personally take every effort to make a green product. I started thinksound because I saw so much waste in manufacturing and I want to make a difference. I am an avid hiker, camper and nature buff and I will personally do my best to make a difference. I will always keep an open mind at thinksound and I am always here for suggestions.

No jobs were 'displaced' in the USA because none exist that can make headphones anymore and I wish there were. All the manufacturing jobs for headphones have already been displaced which means the only choice thinksound has is to adapt. Feel free to email me with any comments or suggestions for thinksound and I will personally discuss them with you. I hope some day thinksound will grow large enough where I can teach Asia, Europe and other regions about being green and that I can also bring some manufacturing back to the USA.

Aaron,

I thank you for your response to what I'm sure was read as a brash response to your product. I acknowledge that some assumptions were made about your product and admittedly I did little research on ThinkSound before responding. That said, I appreciate your feedback. It is well understood from a sustainability consulting perspective that much greenwashing occurs or has occurred from “industry leaders” to maintain a bandwagon approach to marketing, thus making it difficult for the ones, such as yourself to ACTUALLY doing good work and caring about the future of manufacturing and social constructs to succeed. I commend you!

Please, let me know if we (re:thought) can be of service to you in the future for any LCA, Carbon Footprint Analysis, Textile/Material Review or Product Conceptualization. And thanks for the follow on Twitter!
