Tidal power to go ahead

by David Allen on Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

A company based in Bristol, UK, has begun the enormous process of developing a tidal power facility. This will be based just off the north coast of Ireland.

tidal power

The concept is that there are pillars that have been piled into the seabed, and giant propellers are moved by the sea, in a simple way, it is a bit like placing a wind turbine upside down and placing into a flowing river. This is basically what this looks like.

Clearly the science is going to be much more complicated than that, because if it were that simple the wind farms out at sea would have turbines under the water too.

One thing though, what happens to all of the chopped up fish?

How will these farms affect the tides and currents I wonder... is there any ecological impact on the seabed?

Canada will have to look to means other than solar to make up for the high price of fuel. We do not have huge deserts in southern latitudes for solar exploitation as does the U.S. We will have to exploit every little bit of running water we can find in the east, and hope the winds blow steady in the west for our wind mills. We have raped our oilfields and sold them to the US, we have mined huge amounts of coal and shipped it away too. We have cut every stick of wood we can find, replanted little, and sold that too! We have some non-renewable Uranium, but can't really afford the reactors to burn it in, Maybe, some cold winter's night when our stupid asses are out in the frost, we will begin to appreciate the true meaning of words like 'sustainable' and renewable', Until that time, most of us will go on, mimicking the behavior of our neighbors to the south, and in denial of the finite supplies in nature.

They wouldn't chop up fish. A blade in the water does not need to move fast to generate the same energy as a wind turbine due to the relative difference in density (1000X for water). However I would look at the effect on larger sea animals like whales, dolphins, sea lions etc... which would be more vulnerable.
  • It's an interesting idea!

Would changing the tides pull the moon in?
