Wal-Mart to Push Sustainable Shrimp

by erin on Friday, May 25th, 2007

Wal-Mart sells over 50 millions pounds a shrimp per year, with most of it being shipped over from Thailand.

However, the San Franscisco Chronicle is reporting that Wal-Mart is changing how it deals with shrimp to make it more environmentally friendly.

The new Wal-Mart regulation requires that all shrimp farms must be certified by Global Aquaculture Alliance or Aquaculture Certification Council, meaning they must be farmed in environmentally friendly ways.

I’m still sketched out by the idea of buying food at Wal-Mart (I’m a small town farm girl, what can you expect?!) but this is great news!
